DraftKings PGA Lineup Advice: The Memorial

DraftKings PGA Lineup Advice: The Memorial

Coming off a week in which the recommended lineup performed little better than the random selections of a drunken monkey, we’ll try to do a bit better this week.

The PGA Tour heads to Dublin, Ohio, for the Memorial Tournament this week. Jack Nicklaus’ 1974 pet project has seen relentless improvements over the years, and its pristine expanses have it situated in Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses. With favorable conditions, it plays in the mid-tier of difficulty on the PGA Tour calendar.

The winning score at Muirfield Village has been between 12 and 15-under par in the last four contests with the last three tournaments decided by playoffs.

A 7,392-yard gem, Muirfield Village is a par-72 with four accessible par-5s. Slick, rolling bentgrass greens that stimp in excess of 12.5 are always difficult to navigate. Fairway widths are more generous than the last several PGA Tour venues, and this is definitely a second-shot golf course.

Memorial’s bentgrass greens are notoriously fast, rolling in excess of 12 on the stimpmeter, so putting aptitude and quality scrambling skills can’t be overlooked.

The invitational field this week is a strong one. Seven of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking will peg it, with a total of 18 of the top 30 in the field. Noticeably absent are Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.

There has been no shortage of rain in the weeks before the tournament, and we could see a bit more liquid during the tournament, so the course should be gettable.

If you want to go chalk…

Stay away from BK. Koepka has failed to break 70 in five of his last eight tournament rounds. He’s only played the Memorial once and didn’t crack the top 50. He should be priced much closer to $9,000 than his $9,700 price tag. Drop down to Kuchar ($9,400), Reed ($9,200), or Fowler ($8,900) instead.

Top-of-the-line considerations

Dustin Johnson: $12,000
DJ finished third at Muirfield Village last year and cracked the top 15 in 2015. As anyone with an ear turned anywhere near the golf world knows, his recent form has been superb: Top-15 finishes in his last six starts with a pair of wins.

Hideki Matsuyama: $10,000
Attractive at a $10,000 price tag, Hideki Matsuyama has won once and finished fifth in just three Memorial starts. Eighth on Tour in strokes gained: off-the-tee and 19th in strokes gained: approach, The Japanese national has finished top 25 in three of his last four PGA Tour starts.

Birdie Brigade

Birdies are the name of the game in GPPs. Field leaders in birdie or better percentage. Nine of the top 10 on the PGA Tour in BoB% are all in the field this week.

1. Justin Thomas: $7,600
2. Jordan Spieth: $11,100
3. Hideki Matsuyama: $10,000
4. Jon Rahm: $11,100
5. Rickie Fowler: $8,900
6. Dustin Johnson: $12,000
8. Scott Piercy: $7,800
9. Brooks Koepka: $9,700
10. Phil Mickelson: $7,700
11. Luke List: $7,300

Recommended Lineup

Dustin Johnson: $12,000
Yes, he’s the most expensive golfer in the field. Yes, he’ll be owned in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 percent in GPPs. However, thanks to some curious pricing decisions, you can afford to pay up for Dustin Johnson. Even in this strong field, Vegas has him at 6-1 while no other golfer is better than 11-1.

Rickie Fowler: $8,900
Another golfer sure to be widely owned, Rickie Fowler remains a solid GPP play due to his strong track record and penchant for birdies (fifth on Tour in BoB%). He arrives in good form with 16th-or-better finishes in six of his last seven starts. Hopefully, an off week at The Players will drive Dick Fowler, P.I.’s ownership down.

Tony Finau: $7,900
Finau has played the Memorial twice and hasn’t finished worse than 11th. He arrives having finished 30th-or-better in five of his last seven starts. A quality player from tee to green here, folks. Fourth in strokes gained: off-the-tee. 21st in strokes gained: approach. 16th in strokes gained: total.

Phil Mickelson: $7,700
An underpriced player this week, Mickelson at $7,700 is too good to pass up. Top-30 finishes in three of his last four efforts and a couple of top-15s in his last six starts at Memorial. If Mickelson duplicates his 20th-place finish of last year, he should deliver value at this price given his penchant for birdies (15th in birdie average) and eagles (third).

Steve Stricker: $6,900
Strick is a man possessed to get inside the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking to make it into the U.S. Open in his home state. He could do that with a strong showing this week, otherwise, he’ll head to qualifying next Monday, which he surely doesn’t want to do. All that to say he’s incredibly motivated…and on a run of good form. 24th in strokes gained: total.

Charley Hoffman: $6,500
A definite head-scratcher priced this low, Charley Hoffman is 15th on Tour this season in strokes gained: off-the-tee and 29th in strokes gained: tee-to-green. In other words, another solid player here, folks. He tied for 24th at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational in his most recent action and has made four of his last five cuts. And he finished 20th at the Memorial last year. $6,500 alongside Brett Coletta (whoever that is). What gives? Roster the Hoff!
