FanDuel MLB Lineup Advice: Tuesday (5/16)

FanDuel MLB Lineup Advice: Tuesday (5/16)

Tonight, we get a fun 13-game slate with a few top pitchers to choose from, minimal weather concerns and lefty pitchers galore to pick on. I’ve got a lineup for you that I am comfortable using in both cash games and GPP:

Tonight, we have a 14-game slate with both Coors and Chase Field in play. There are a few aces on the mound, but no matchups to write home about. The pitching options paired with a number of terrific stacks makes this a GPP night for me.

For reference throughout the season, be sure to bookmark our overview of MLB Park Factors and how to Use Weather to Your Advantage in MLB DFS. Also, check out our GPP and Cash Games Primers to learn more about different daily fantasy game types specific to MLB.

Weather

This is one of the rare nights during the season where the wind will have virtually zero impact on the slate. With that being said, there are some delay concerns so I’ll be avoiding pitchers in the NYY/CIN game.

COL @ MIN – 25% chance at early delay
NYY @ KCR – 10% chance at late delay
LAD @ SFG – 10% chance at delay
All other games – <5% chance at delay
No threat for a postponed game

Wind blowing out to left at 14 MPH in BOS @ STL (power boost for righties)
Wind blowing out to left at 18 MPH in NYY @ KCR (big power boost for righties)
Wind blowing out to left at 17 MPH in CIN @ CHC (big power boost for righties
Wind blowing in from center at 18 MPH in PHI @ TEX (don’t play power bats)

Overall Thoughts

What if I told you there was a way to get Mike Trout, Manny Machado, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Corey Seager, Jose Abreu, Andrew McCutchen and George Springer in your lineup? Oh, and feel free to toss in one of the aces from tonight’s slate too. This isn’t a make believe scenario, it is what we can accomplish with this wild slate.

No, FanDuel didn’t add 20k to everyone’s budget, nor are they allowing two 3rd basemen and two 1st basemen in the same lineup. These are only equivalent names to the production our players have put up in large sample sizes. Let me show you how this works:

Catcher

James McCann (DET): $2,500 vs BAL
In his previous 261 plate appearances against lefties, he has produced a whopping 2.69 FanDuel points per plate appearance. That number is exactly the same as what Machado managed overall last season. That is not a small sample size and we get ourselves a very cheap yet extremely productive catcher today against Wade Miley, who is at the very best a mediocre lefty.

First Base

Trey Mancini (BAL): $3,100 @ DET
The kid raked against lefties all through the minors (274 PA sample) at a clip of 3.05 FanDuel points per plate apperance. Since these aren’t minor league pitchers, the widely accepted translation is 0.8, which brings Mancini to 2.44. That number is on par with what McCutchen accomplished overall last season. Matthew Boyd and his 1.80 WHIP makes matters even better.

Second Base

Brandon Drury (ARI): $2,600 vs NYM
You guessed it, another hitter against a terrible lefty. Tommy Milone is on the mound tonight in Chase Field, aka Coors-lite, so you’ll see a trio of lefty-crushing Diamondbacks in the lineup. For what it’s worth, in his previous 163 PA against lefties, he has posted 2.41 FD Pts/PA. This one is the equivalent of Abreu overall from last season for $2.6k at second base in Chase against a terrible pitcher. Whoa!

Third Base

Jedd Gyorko (STL): $3,700 vs BOS
This tweet should tell you all you need to know:

If you need extra convincing, Gyorko is even better against lefties, at home and obviously with the wind howling out to left field.

Shortstop

Chris Owings (ARI): $3,300 vs NYM
here is another lefty-pulverizer against Milone at Chase. In his previous 162 plate apperances against lefties, he has been on par (2.55 FD Pts/PA) with George Springer overall, who mind you, would cost $4,500 at shortstop, let alone the ballpark or matchup.

Outfielders

Yasmani Tomas (ARI): $3,300 vs NYM
Tomas was unbelievable against lefties last season, posting a whopping 3.44 FD Pts per plate appearance. Remember, Milone is worse than your standard lefty and Chase Field provides a nice boost in projections as well. Imagine if Trout (3.30 FD Pts/PA overall) cost $3,300 against a lousy pitcher in Chase Field. He would be 100% owned.

Domingo Santana (MIL): $3,200 @ SDP
In back to back years, Santana hit the ball as hard as anyone in the Bigs not named Giancarlo Stanton, but both seasons he had among the worst BABIP and HR/FB ratio luck in baseball. Still in that time, he managed to post 2.88 FD Pts/PA in a 148 PA sample size. That is exactly what Rizzo gave fantasy owners all of last season. This game is being played in Petco, but Clayton Richard always gets obliterated by right-handed hitters and every homer he has surrendered in the past three years was to righties.

Franklin Gutierrez (LAD): $2,900 @ SFG
With the wind blowing out at 21 MPH in the Bay, Gutierrez batting clean-up and a mediocre pitcher opposing him, he might be worth starting against a righty. With the left-handed Ty Blach, he morphs into one of the top plays of the week. In his past 350 PA against lefties, Gutierrez has posted 2.65 FD Pts/PA. That is significantly better than Corey Seager from last season overall, who I don’t have to tell you is typically priced at over 4k.

Pitcher

There are three guys in play for cash games tonight:

The difference between these guys is minuscule and you can feel good about using any of them, but I’m using Greinke because his floor seems highest. His previous five starts have given owners 64, 46, 40, 58 and 43 FanDuel points including two games against the Rockies, one in Coors. Sure, Strausburg and Darvish have increased upside with their strikeout potential, but they have both been a little hit or miss so I’m going to play it careful.

Beyond these three, there are a few more guys I’d focus on for GPP this evening:

All three have considerable strikeout upside, but there are significant question marks lingering too. Rodriguez gets a hot Cardinals lineup with a few guys who torch lefties and  the wind howling out to right. Ramirez struggled last start and hasn’t done much of anything until this season. Hill could be removed after four pitches for a blister issue, you just never know with him.
