Pitcher

Zack Wheeler (NYM): $7,200 vs. SFG
It’s a rough situation out there today for pitching if you are not going with Max Scherzer or Carlos Carrasco. There are many questionable pitchers on the hill and a lot of hitter-friendly parks in play such as Arizona, Cincinnati, Colorado, Milwaukee, and Philly. For your GPP plays, ponder Wheeler. Yeah, I know, the numbers don’t look good on Wheeler, a pitcher trying to bounce back from injury on a team plagued with injuries, but consider these factors. When it comes to home runs, Citi Field is dead last with the lowest amount of long balls of any MLB park. So that leaves run-producing hits. The San Francisco Giants are next to last in both RBIs and runs this season (only the Royals have them beat) and dead last in homers. The team with the least amount of home runs in the park with the least amount of home runs. Jeff Samardzija has a 6.27 ERA on the road this year and Wheeler is coming off a full week’s rest after a shortened start due to rain last time out. Two more factors to consider.

Catcher

Cameron Rupp (PHI): $2,900 vs. SEA
At 6′ 2″ and 260 pounds, Cameron Rupp resembles a lumberjack who should be accompanied by a massive blue ox. He has been swinging the hatchet pretty well lately with two home runs and three RBIs over his last seven games. Rupp is batting .304 against left-handed pitching and is matched with Ariel Miranda who has given up seven earned runs over his last three games. Rupp has a nice park factor in Philadelphia too.

First Base

Edwin Encarnacion (CLE): $3,100 @ TOR
Sometimes changing teams can greatly affect a player. This could be the case with Indians new DH Encarnacion. Edwin batted a mere .200 in the month of April, but has brought his average up to .286 in May. Thing is, his price is still cheap and we know what this guy is capable of. He hit 42 homers in 2016 and if you think his bat will continue to be silent in 2017, you’ve got another thing coming. No one could have guessed that the Blue Jays would start May off in the cellar of the American League East. My theory is that throwing Mike Bolsinger in the mix won’t help them turn around this dismal season. Bolsinger, hasn’t played in a game with the Jays since arriving via trade last year. In 2016 for the Dodgers, Bolsinger was 1-4 with an ERA of 6.83 in six games. Encarnacion hit all of his five homers (and 33 last season) off of right-handed pitchers. So there is that too.

Second Base

Jed Lowrie (OAK): $2,300 vs. LAA
One filler you can use to free up some loot for your home run parks is Jed Lowrie. At $2,300 he is a steal and is clobbering right-handers with a .317 average, 26 hits, seven doubles, two homers and nine walks. Alex Meyer will have a look at Lowrie with his 9.39 ERA. Righty bats are hitting .412 off of him. Yikes!

Third Base

Jedd Gyorko (STL): $3,200 @ MIA
We jump from one “d” Jed to two “d” Jedd. It was a breakout season in 2016 for Gyorko, who belted 30 home runs for the Red Birds. He is a pretty good bargain paired with Dan Straily who he’s hit two bombs off of in eight at-bats. Gyorko is batting .375 over his last seven games with nine hits including two home runs. Ride him while he is hot. And it’s hot in Miami!

Shortstop

Zack Cozart (CIN): $3,200 vs. NYY
Cozart hit more homers in 2016 (16) than he had in the previous two years combined. Hard to follow that act, but this year the Reds shortstop is hitting .351 with 33 hits and 18 runs scored. He has done especially well against southpaws batting .412 in 17 at-bats. He will face C.C. Sabathia at Great American Ballpark where the ball flies high and far. Sabathia got roughed up last time out giving up six earned over 4.0 innings pitched. Time for the Zack attack!

Outfield

Albert Almora, Jr. (CHC): $3,100 @ COL
If you are looking for value in the game at Coors when everyone is taking Bryant and Rizzo, think Albert Almora, Jr. The 23-year-old has been modestly batting .292 for the Cubbies this season and has put a hurtin’ on lefties. He is hitting .455 with 10 hits and two homers vs. southpaws in 22 at-bats. Kyle Freeland has pitched well, but that ERA gets adjusted a bit higher home at Coors.

Eddie Rosario (MIN): $2,600 @ CHW
Happy Mike Pelfrey Day! Except this year it’s not with the Twins, but with the White Sox against the Twins. These guys know him and Eddie Rosario is red hot over the past week batting .400 with eight hits including two doubles and one bomb. You can bet Rosario will score if he gets on base and vs. Pelfrey, I like the odds.

Ben Gamel (SEA): $2,700 @ PHI
Another great filler is Ben Gamel of the Mariners. He will greet the Phillies in their home field of Citizens Bank Park which ranks eighth among all parks in homers and runs. Gamel has been hitting in the two hole and has eight hits and four RBIs in his last seven games. He is batting .324 vs. righties and will go up against Jared Eickhoff who has and ERA sitting at 4.00 this season. Plop Gamel in and add some bigger bats elsewhere.
