Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Aroldis Chapman, Gregory Polanco, Trevor Story

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Aroldis Chapman, Gregory Polanco, Trevor Story

Week six of the fantasy baseball season came to an end on Sunday as we celebrated the special mothers and women in our lives on Mother’s Day. The special day, capped off by the number retiring ceremony of former Yankee great Derek Jeter, began with the somber news that star closer Aroldis Chapman would miss at least a month of action with a rotator cuff strain in his pitching shoulder.

The day finished with a groin injury to A.J. Pollock in the 10th frame of an extra-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. As of Sunday evening, there is no update on the severity of the injury to Pollock, but a trip to the 10-day DL is likely for the former All-Star centerfielder.

Here are some other injuries we are tracking from the past week of games, including injuries to closers Jeurys Familia and Mark Melancon.

Ryan Braun (OF – MIL)
Another week, another addition of Braun to the injury report. After missing action with arm and shoulder injuries, a left calf strain landed the former MVP and six-time All-Star on the 10-day disabled list.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said on MLB Network Radio that Braun’s injury is pretty minor and Braun will likely only require the minimum stay on the disabled list. From a fantasy perspective, there was some buzz on social media that top prospect Lewis Brinson would receive the call up from Triple-A to replace Braun in left field. That move has not been made yet by the Brewers’ front office, but if in fact Brinson gets the call, he should be added in all formats.

Ben Zobrist (OF/2B – CHI)
Zobrist has missed the final two games of the week after revealing that he has been hampered by a sore back. With a pedestrian 13/3/13/.223 line in his first 112 at-bats this season, perhaps his back injury could be a reason for early season struggles for the career .265 hitter.

With other second basemen like Tim Beckham, Brandon Drury, Josh Harrison, and Hernan Perez available in more that 50% of Yahoo leagues, perhaps the 75% ownership level of Zobrist is too high and owners should think about moving on.

Kenta Maeda (SP – LAD)
Left hamstring tightness has forced Kenta Maeda to the 10-day DL on May 11th. The placement on the disabled list came just one day after Maeda posted an 8 1/3 gem. Maeda’s injury does not appear to be serious and could be just another move by the Dodgers to utilize the new 10-day DL in their favor as they continue to manage their pitching rotation.

Monitor this situation closely and make a move to add Maeda If someone overreacts to his placement on the DL. It could be an excellent way to add a solid No. 3 fantasy starter from the waiver wire.

Andrew Toles (OF – LAD)
The emergence of Cody Bellinger and the crowded Dodger outfield created a bit of a problem for manager Dave Roberts and the Los Angeles front office, as the Dodgers had too many good young players and too few spots in the lineup.

That problem became much clearer for Roberts with the news that Andrew Toles will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Toles can be dropped in all formats, and if for some reasons Bellinger is still available in your league, make a move to add him ASAP.

Mark Melancon (RP – SF)
The Giants brought in Melancon via free agency this offseason to be the savior of a terrible bullpen that blew the most saves in 2016. A terrible start to the season by the Giants has negated the value of adding a high-priced closer like Melancon, as the former Washington National and Pittsburgh Pirate has logged only six saves this season.

Melancon will need to wait a bit to get his next save, as a mild right pronator strain in his elbow landed him on the 10-day DL. The injury is not thought to be overly serious, and Melancon is set to begin throwing off the mound early this week. Derek Law has assumed the role of closer for the Giants in Melancon’s stead.

Robinson Cano (2B – SEA)
Cano missed the final three games of the week for the Mariners with a tight right quadriceps. He is officially listed as day-to-day, and manager Scott Servais told reporters after Seattle’s game on Sunday against Toronto that the team hopes Cano will be back in the lineup on Monday against the Athletics.

Jeurys Familia (RP – NYM)
The ongoing saga that is the New York Mets’ injury report continued to grow this week with the addition of closer Jeurys Familia to the 10-day DL with an arterial blood clot in his throwing shoulder. Familia underwent surgery to remove the clot and will miss approximately three months to recover.

Addison Reed will take over the closing duties for manager Terry Collins and the Mets. At his current ownership level of 72% in Yahoo Leagues, Reed may still be available in your league and should be added immediately.

Gregory Polanco (OF – PIT)
One of the early season busts for fantasy owners finally starting to put things together, Polanco left Sunday’s game against Arizona with a hamstring injury. Polanco will receive a day of rest on Monday with the Pirates scheduled for an off day. His status going forward will be determined by how he responds when the team takes batting practice on Tuesday before taking on the Nationals at PNC Park.

Trevor Story (SS – COL)
In keeping with the theme of early season disappointments, Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story and his sub-Mendoza batting average have landed on the disabled list with a left shoulder strain. The fact that he smashed 27 home runs and drove in 72 batters in just 97 games last season makes me hesitant to drop Story, but a shoulder injury and awful production in his first 128 at bats in 2017 has raised some serious red flags. If you can get 50 cents on the dollar for Story, it might be worth it at this point.

Hisashi Iwakuma (SP – SEA)
A shoulder strain will cost Iwakuma a month or so of action, joining fellow rotation mates Felix Hernandez and James Paxton on the 10-day DL. Iwakuma is droppable in nearly every format, as he has yet to notch a win in 2017 and his 4.35 ERA in 31 innings of work has been less than impressive.

Updating Existing Injuries

Corey Kluber (SP – CLE) – Lower Back Strain
Kluber was not activated from the disabled list when eligible on Saturday, as the Indians sent him home before their three-game series against Toronto over the weekend. He has started to run, but he appears to be ways away from getting back on the mound.

James Paxton (SP – SEA) – Forearm Strain
Paxton began throwing from 60-feet on Thursday and looks to be progressing well. He could return to action this weekend.

Zach Britton (RP – BAL) – Forearm Strain
Shut down from throwing and could miss up to 60-days. Brad Brach has assumed the starting role at closer for Baltimore.
