It’s getting to that time of year where we are all figuring out what kind of team we have. Coming out of our draft or auction, maybe we thought we had tons of power, but thanks to Chris Davis and Todd Frazier, we’re falling short there. Perhaps we felt good about speed, but George Springer and Charlie Blackmon just ain’t running. And so we venture into the deep, dark world of trading. We attempt to deal from our excess in order to address our shortcomings, and find a deal that hopefully works for both teams, but at least definitely works for our team.
When I’m seeking out trades, I generally use the trade assistant or trade finder applications on My Playbook. Trade Assistant analyzes whether a proposed trade would actually benefit your team in the standings based on rest-of-season projections, and trade finder seeks out trades in your league and lets you know the probability that the other owner will accept an offer. They’re both pretty invaluable tools. But the problem is that they have no persuasive value with the other owner. He thinks his offer of Evan Longoria for Giancarlo Stanton is a great deal for you, so he doesn’t much care when you tell him that My Playbook makes it pretty clear that the deal only benefits him.
With that in mind, I’m proud to present FantasyPros’ first ever trade chart. It’s a pretty simple concept – the top 300 players are assigned a value, and you can use those values to figure out the merits of a trade. If player x is worth 40 points, and someone offers you player y, who is worth 15, and player z, who is worth 10, then you probably shouldn’t accept. Make sense? That way, you can actually get back to that other owner and point to the chart to say ” See, I told you that Longoria for Stanton isn’t close!”
These values based on a standard rotisserie league, so if you’re playing in a points league, or in a league with stat categories like strikeouts on Mondays against left-handed pitchers only, perhaps don’t get married to the chart below! And while I’d be happy to create a trade chart for points leagues if there is demand, it will require a minimum of 20 tweets at Bobby Sylvester (@bobbyfantasypro) requesting it, so that I can pay him back for making me cover for him while he was on vacation. Tell him Dan Harris sent you.
Before you dive in, let me just put all my cards on the table. I found this to be an incredibly difficult exercise. I have badgered our analysts for DAYS in an attempt to get the values right. “Mike, would you trade Player X for Player Y and Player Z? No? Ok, adjust the values.” But there are exactly 13,439,246 possible trades that you can come up with based on the players listed, and it’s simply impossible to run every permutation through a test. So, it’s definitely possible that some results might be a little off, and we’ll work to smooth it out over the coming weeks. So, no mean tweets, please. Mean emails are fine. Also, I made that 13 million number up. But there are a lot!
Ok, enough talk. This is history, guys. By reading this, you are officially part of FantasyPros history. Our children will write stories about this moment. And by “write stories about this moment,” I mean roll their eyes and not really care. But whatever. Let’s do this.
Without further ado, here is your FantasyPros rotisserie trade chart. Enjoy!
