5 Deep Hitters to Pick Up (Fantasy Baseball)

5 Deep Hitters to Pick Up (Fantasy Baseball)

Week 13 is upon us, and we have five more hitters for you to consider adding in deep mixed leagues and AL/NL-only formats. All of these players have ownership of less than 10%.

Brian Goodwin (OF – WAS): 1%
The 26-year-old has only started nine of the Nationals last 12 games but he is hitting .324 with 1.270 OPS, including five home runs and four doubles. In a Nationals’ lineup that features Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, and Daniel Murphy, Goodwin is the hottest hitter.

For the first time in his career, Goodwin is benefitting from regular playing time in the majors, thanks in part to the injuries to Adam Eaton and Jayson Werth. Perhaps it is a sign of becoming more relaxed at the plate, but Goodwin has just had consecutive two-walk games, a surprising feat considering he has only taken six walks over his previous 31 games.

Michael Taylor (OF- WAS): 4%
Here’s another Nationals’ outfielder who has never lived up to his high prospect status. The 26-year-old has seven home runs in June and is hitting .370 over his last 12 games. Unlike Goodwin, Taylor offers speed to go with his power, and already has seven stolen bases this season.

The center fielder’s big problem has always been the high strikeout rate over 30%. This season is no different with 32.9% strikeout rate to go with a walk rate below 5%.

Denard Span (OF – SF): 3%
The veteran center fielder is leading off for the Giants, yet he is only 3% owned. Over the last two weeks, Span has three stolen bases with a .314/.375/.490 slash line. Surely that must be useful in your deep league.

The Giants are enduring a 1-10 win-loss stretch, yet Span is slashing .366/.422/.561 over his last 11 games. If he can stay hot and the Giants can start to win, he could be valuable in more than just deep leagues.

Orlando Arcia (SS – MIL): 6%
The 22-year-old posted a .631 OPS in his debut season last year with four homers in 216 plate appearances and a .219 batting average. The lack of interest in him on draft day was justified. However, over the next 34 games, he slashed .331/.364/.430.

Arcia won’t contribute many counting stats but he is on target for double-digit home runs and stolen bases. Over his last 16 games, he has a .397 OBP with four stolen bases, so the improving contact rates and on-base skills could see him move up the Brewers’ order.

Franklin Barreto (SS – OAK): 8%
The No. 44 prospect according to MLB Pipeline hit .291 with .803 OPS over five years in the minors, including eight home runs, 10 doubles, and four stolen bases in Triple-A this season. He marked his MLB debut on Saturday with a home run off veteran James Shields and collected two more hits on Sunday. Expect Barreto to add second base eligibility as soon as this week, although that will be dependent upon Jed Lowrie’s recovery.

Barreto strikes out far too much, as demonstrated by 92 strikeouts to 17 walks in the PCL before his promotion. It has been suggested that he is becoming too pull-oriented with an overly-aggressive approach, but don’t forget that the Athletics’ top infield prospect is still only 21 years old.
