Davante Adams and Value

Davante Adams and Value

If I told you that you could draft a wideout who scored 10 touchdowns on 105 targets from Week 4 to Week 17 in 2016, I’m sure I’d have your attention. If I told you the only receivers to outscore this player during that time were Odell Beckham, Jordy Nelson, Antonio Brown, and Mike Evans, I’m sure both ears would be open. But if I told you that you could currently take this receiver in the fourth round, you’d probably tell me that I must be mistaken.

Davante Adams is still a Packer, and Aaron Rodgers is still his quarterback. Insider information, I know. And further, Rodgers owned a ridiculous 142.8 passer rating on slant routes in 2016. Adams happens to run a pretty good slant, so I’m told. Adams is currently being taken as the 18th receiver off the board with an early Average Draft Position in the 40s.

Yes, Jordy Nelson is very much alive. But he turns 32 this season and the Rodgers-led Packers have thrown the ball nearly 1,200 times over the past two seasons. That is unlikely to change, and Adams should be the biggest beneficiary. He has established himself as the clear 1B option behind Nelson and should have a reasonable shot at double-digit touchdowns once again after scoring a dozen times a season ago while posting a respectable 62% catch rate.

Perhaps most importantly, he has as good a shot as any receiver to outperform his current ADP. On the rare occasion you have the opportunity to draft a WR2 who could conceivably perform as a fantasy WR1, you take that player as often as possible. Too often in today’s fantasy landscape of information overload do owners overvalue or overdraft a popular and rising name, only to completely incinerate any value that player carried at their typical draft position. At a point in the draft that begins to muddy with uncertainty at running back and a crop of injury-prone rebound stories at receiver, the 6’1” 24-year-old is an undervalued asset with a sky-high ceiling.
