DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Wednesday (6/14)

Welcome back to another edition of our MLB Value Plays on DraftKings. We will be offering up a pitcher under $8k, as well as a hitter at each position, and three in the outfield, that are priced $3.5k or below. A new feature to my value play article this year, we will be keeping track of how many home runs we can provide to our readers.

Last week was an awful week – bluntly put. Home runs are unpredictable, and I fully understand that.

Usually, though, we end up with most of these value plays at least producing. That wasn’t the case last week. In MLB DFS, it’s always on to the next one, so that’s our attitude tonight.

Value Homers: 6

Let’s get things started!

Pitcher

Dylan Bundy (BAL): $7,700 @ CWS
Dylan Bundy is off to a pretty solid start this year. He has been the lone bright spot with the Orioles pitching staff, a spot that many believed would belong to Kevin Gausman. He doesn’t have high strikeout potential, but he’s been able to manage his way through games.

The White Sox are striking out at a 23.4% clip against right-handed pitchers, though we have seen them put a hurting on some mid to lower tier righties. I don’t think Bundy falls into that camp, and while he could still be touched up, I feel fine about using him tonight.

Catcher

Chris Iannetta (ARI): $3,300 @ DET
The Diamondbacks can be tough to read at times. I can almost never end up getting their rotation correct before they post their lineup, so there could be a chance Iannetta might not be in the lineup tonight.

If he is, he’s someone I want to get exposure to. The Diamondbacks will take on Jordan Zimmerman, who is everyone’s favorite punching bags. His stats are horrible against hitters from both sides of the plate, and Iannetta is an excellent value play that could have a good night.

First Base

Tommy Joseph (PHI): $3,600 vs. BOS
Every week, I end up with one hitter slightly over the $3.5k mark. This week it’s going to be Tommy Joseph. He was a semi-popular target last night against Davis Price, but I like him even more tonight against Brian Johnson.

He hasn’t managed to take on the lefty-masher role that we know he is capable of, but this is too good of a matchup to pass up. Johnson is allowing a lot of hard contact and fly balls to righties this year, and I think he should be a good bet to get the job done for us tonight.

Second Base

Kolten Wong (STL): $3,500 vs. MIL
This is going to be an interesting situation. Both Wong and Eric Sogard, in the same game, are priced the same. Sogard was a trendy pick for a week or so, but his play has fallen off a cliff. I’m curious to see where the ownership divide will be.

I tend to favor Wong against Matt Garza, who is allowing 43.5% fly ball rate and 36% hard contact against lefties this year. Wong has been playing well to boot, so I think he makes a nice value option on tonight’s slate.

Third Base

Matt Davidson (CWS): $3,500 @ BAL
There are no excellent options that jump out at me at the third base position tonight. Jedd Gyorko has lost some steam, and beyond that, no one other than Davidson stands out to me.

In this series against the Orioles, he has back to back games with home runs. Bundy is going to give up some runs, and I think that with how Davidson is playing, he could be involved in things.

The upside is there, but there is also some downside associated with it as well. I’m willing to take the risk.

Shortstop

Eduardo Escobar (MIN): $3,500 vs. SEA
I hope you had some exposure to the Twins last night! They were the difference between big money and nothing at all. While we can expect the same thing tonight, I think they are still in a good spot to produce.

Sam Gaviglio isn’t a bad pitcher, but at the same time, he isn’t a guy we are going to run away from. Against lefties, he’s allowing 35.1% fly ball rate and 42.1% hard contact. That sets up well for a boom/bust play like Escobar in tournaments.

Outfield

Adam Jones (BAL): $3,400 @ CWS
Outfield always has some solid options, and tonight is no different. I like the upside for the Orioles tonight, and one of my favorites is Adam Jones. He isn’t priced very high at all and has been hitting pitchers in the vein of Gonzalez quite well this year.

On the year, Miguel Gonzalez hasn’t been awful, but, yet again, isn’t someone we are going to try to avoid. He allows a high fly ball rate, and with a guy like Jones, that could be a problem. I don’t mind using him in either format.

Derek Fisher (HOU): $3,000 vs. TEX
The Astros are always a possibility. Typically, we are talking about guys like Correa, Altuve or Springer. Tonight will be different.

Well, maybe different. We don’t know what their starting lineup will look like.

The Astros are bringing their top prospect, Derek Fisher, up to replace Josh Reddick while he is dealing with a concussion. He was killing it in the minors this year, and if you remember how Carlos Correa came up, you know these guys can catch fire quickly. Andrew Cashner has looked better as of late, but this is a tough task, and you are likely to get very low ownership on Fisher tonight.

Eric Young Jr. (LAA): $3,200 vs. NYY
Eric Young Jr. has certainly made the most of his playing time. He’s done well for him in the batting average department, as well as hitting some home runs and stealing some bases. He’s a solid all-around fantasy play.

Michael Pineda is on the mound for the Yankees tonight. He’s a good pitcher, but when he unwinds, he’s a gas can. I’m all about the risks in tournaments, and at the price Young is at tonight, he’s a no-brainer for me.
