FanDuel MLB Lineup Advice: Tuesday (6/27)

This Tuesday night, we get a 15-game slate with a load of quality pitchers to choose from and one lineup that stands out even above the other handful of impressive lineups tonight. Let’s take a look at how I’ll be sorting this one out.

For reference throughout the season, be sure to bookmark our overview of MLB Park Factors and how to Use Weather to Your Advantage in MLB DFS. Also, check out our GPP and Cash Games Primers to learn more about different daily fantasy game types specific to MLB.

Pitcher

Luis Severino (NYY): $9,200 @ CHW

I nearly always build my lineup around my pitcher and I started to do that today with Jeff Hoffman (COL), who is a top 10 pitcher in baseball this season according to xwOBA. Hoffman plays in the best pitcher’s park tonight against a crummy lineup so he could rack up the strikeouts. Sean Newcomb (ATL) is a tremendous cheap play as well and of course, we have Max Scherzer (WAS), James Paxton (SEA), Kenta Maeda (LAD), and even Michael Clevinger (CLE) and Justin Verlander (DET) who all represent plays that you’d consider most nights. Tonight, there are two super value hitters that defeat the purpose of spending down on a Hoffman or Newcomb. There are also a few pricey plays that you can’t afford to leave out of your lineup. That lands us on Severino, who fits in perfectly with the best lineup and is quite the play himself.

Severino’s opponent, the White Sox, are both bottom six in the league at home and against righties. They strike out plenty as well, and seeing that Severino has 48 Ks in his previous 7 starts, it is safe to say that he will get you at least 6 in tonight’s game. The Yankees are clear Vegas favorites on the road tonight and hold an implied opponent total under 4 runs.

Catcher

Yasmani Grandal (LAD): $2,900 vs LAA

If you read my articles every week, you are growing to expect this one, and love the cash it’s been bringing you. Grandal is a monster at home and especially against righties. His OPS against RHP is 260 points better than against LHP and at home is 275 points better than in away games. He posted similar splits last season as well.

First Base

Sam Travis (BOS): $2,300 vs MIN

Here is my favorite play of the day and I’ll keep it simple and sweet:

In 295 PA against LHP in the minors, he batted .352/.420/.568 with a pace of 80 extra-base hits, 90 R, 90 RBI and 16 SB. Granted, that’s the minor leagues, but any translation metric you use will tell you he is at least a .280/.340/.460 hitter against them in the majors. As it turns out, we have seen even better thus far with a .471/.526/.588 line in his small sample size.

Second Base

Brian Dozier (MIN) : $3,500 @ BOS

After posting a torrid .965 OPS against lefties last season, Dozier has picked up right where he started with a .976 OPS against them this season. His opponent, Drew Pomeranz makes things even better seeing that he surrendered 20 of his 22 homers to righties last season.

Third Base

Josh Donaldson (TOR) : $3,800 vs BAL

Kevin Gausman is an odd pitcher in that his splits have always been reversed from the normal righty. He gets crushed to a clip of .371/.418/.571 by righties this season and 150 points worse than against LHB the year prior. Donaldson is the perfect match, as he was actually better against righties last season despite being a RHB himself.

Shortstop

Xander Bogaerts (BOS): $3,600 vs MIN

This Boston lineup is slated to score 6.28 runs by Vegas tonight. That kind of total pops up once every two weeks and it is usually in Coors. Bogaerts will be in the heart of the order and has hit lefties to a tune of .311/.380/.483 over the previous three seasons.

Outfield

Mookie Betts (BOS) : $3,600 vs MIN

Hector Santiago has been downright awful this season with a 5.26 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Betts should spend plenty of time on base tonight in this high-implied offensive situation. Add in a positive split against lefties (.300/.327/.580 this year) and he is the clear top outfield play of the evening.

Chris Young (BOS): $2,300 vs MIN

Not only is Hector Santiago bad, but he is really bad against righties. Chris Young just happens to be a specialist at crushing these types of pitchers. He may have started slow this season, but last year he had a .999 OPS against LHPand .972 the year prior.

J.D. Martinez (DET): $3,800 vs KCR

Matthew Strahm isn’t a bad pitcher by any means, but J.D. obliterates lefties. He is batting .519/.606/1.074 (not a typo) this season and a .926 OPS the previous three seasons combined. Detroit is expected to score 5.10 runs tonight and J.D. should be at the center of that action.
