FanDuel MLB Value Plays: Monday (6/26)

Welcome to the Monday edition of the FanDuel MLB value plays. Tonight we have small, six-game slate to work with on this last Monday in June. As always, be sure to check out the weather and the team lineups throughout the day. Let’s go ahead and take a look at my favorite value options for today.

Pitcher

Rich Hill (LAD): $7,800 vs. LAA
Hill has not pitched nearly as well as he did in 2016, but he still has shown the strikeout upside that we are looking for in DFS, with a 9.68 K/9. Tonight he has a solid matchup against the Angels, who currently rank 20th in the league against left-handed pitchers and they will be losing the DH as well.

Catcher

Willson Contreras (CHC): $2,700 at WAS
Whenever we have a catcher who is priced below $3,000 and hits in a premium spot of the order, he should be on our radar. With Anthony Rizzo hitting in the leadoff spot lately, Willson Contreras has been hitting either third or fourth. Contreras has been solid against left-handed pitchers this season, with a 0.343 wOBA and 0.179 ISO. Gio Gonzalez has been decent in 2017, but he has not been dominant by any means against right-handed hitters, allowing a 1.56 HR/9 and a 4.15 BB/9.

First Base

Tyler Austin (NYY): $2,200 at CHW
Tyler Austin was called back up by the Yankees on Saturday when they designated Chris Carter for assignment. The Yankees really like this kid and he has crushed left-handed pitchers at the minor league level. David Holmberg has done well for the White Sox so far this season, but his 5.06 xFIP suggests that his 2.84 ERA has been pretty flukey.

Second Base

Javier Baez (CHC): $2,700 at WAS
Addison Russell left yesterday’s game with a shoulder injury, so there is a great chance that Javier Baez will be in the lineup tonight. Baez will have his share of strikeouts, but he is capable of hitting a home run in any of his at-bats. Even though I already recommended Contreras as well, I wouldn’t go too hard after Gonzalez tonight since he has pitched well. I would probably use Contreras in my cash games and Baez in my GPPs.

Third Base

Ryder Jones (SFG): $2,000 vs. COL
There really is not much to love in terms of value at third base tonight and it’s probably going to be a spot where I force myself to spend up. Since there are not any solid value options, we might as well punt with someone who is at the bare minimum salary. Ryder Jones was recently called up to Triple-A by the Giants after they designated Aaron Hill for assignment. Jones has been doing pretty well this season at Triple-A with a 0.404 wOBA in 228 plate appearances. German Marquez is another value pitcher who I like tonight, but I don’t mind using a one-off value hitter like Jones, if you need the salary to make the rest of your lineup work tonight.

Shortstop

Tim Anderson (CHW): $2,700 vs. NYY
Similar to third base, shortstop is another position where I will probably look to spend tonight. If you do go the value route though, consider using Tim Anderson. Not many people realize this, but the White Sox are actually one of the best offensive teams against left-handed pitchers this season. There are probably at least three other White Sox hitters who I would choose to use before Anderson. However, Anderson is not awful against lefties and he typically hits near the top of the order when other teams start lefties.

Outfielders

Albert Almora (CHC): $2,200 vs. WAS
Albert Almora is another value option from the Cubs who we can consider tonight. Almora has been getting more playing time lately with all of the injuries to the Cubs and he has been pretty productive in his opportunities this season. Like I said previously, I probably wouldn’t stack the Cubs against Gonzalez, but you can use an option or two if you’re looking for a couple of value options into your lineup.

Brian Goodwin (WAS): $2,600 vs. CHC
Brian Goodwin has been hitting second for the Nationals lately against right-handed pitchers and he has done well with six hits, four walks, three RBI’s and five runs in his last three starts. Eddie Butler has limited the long balls this season, but he has really struggled with his command this year allowing a 4.89 BB/9.

Adam Engel (CHW): $2,400 vs. NYY
Adam Engel’s spot near the bottom of the order lately is not ideal, but he has been solid at both the Triple-A level and his brief time at the MLB level so far. I mentioned that the White Sox have been outstanding against left-handed pitchers this season, and if they can continue that trend against Montgomery tonight, Engel may still get enough opportunities to be a decent value option on this short slate.
