Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Matt Harvey, Chris Davis, C.C. Sabathia

Week 11 of the MLB season came to an end in prime fashion as Nolan Arenado completed the cycle against the Giants on Father’s Day, capped by a three-run walk-off home run to secure a four-game sweep for the Rockies.

Edwin Encarnacion, Xander Bogaerts, and Logan Morrison each launched two home runs on Father’s Day, while Jacob deGrom pitched eight strong innings of three-hit ball and hit his first career HR to help secure a win over the NL East-leading Nationals.

On the injury front, the Mets learned over the weekend that they would be without the services of starting pitcher Matt Harvey and infielder Neil Walker for an extended period. Harvey suffered a strain to the scapula bone in his back, while Walker partially tore his left hamstring.

Here are a few other injuries that we are tracking from last week.

Adrian Gonzalez (1B – LAD)

After managing to stay off the disabled list for the first 13 years of his MLB career, Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day DL for a second time this season, as shooting pain in his lower back forced the five-time All-Star out of the Dodger lineup over the weekend.

The Dodgers are in a position to likely give Gonzalez an extended period of rest to ensure that his back does not flare up again, with rookie of the year candidate Cody Bellinger more than able to play first base and Joc Pederson returning from the disabled list.

Chris Davis (1B – BAL)

Davis will likely be out past the All-Star break due to a strained oblique muscle in his side. The power-hitting first baseman is averaging one home run every 15.5 plate appearances this season with a whopping 95 strikeouts in 250 plate appearances.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter told the Associated Press that “Three weeks would be real ambitious” for Davis returning to the club, with a much longer stay on the DL likely. Hot-hitting Trey Mancini (25% ownership in Yahoo leagues) of the Orioles is a viable replacement in the short term for Davis owners looking for a power replacement.

Kevin Kiermaier (OF – TB)

A hairline fracture to his hip will keep Kevin Kiermaier out of action for at least two months. Widely considered one of the premier defensive outfielders in baseball, Kiermaier has been a fringe fantasy option in standard 12-team leagues but did have some value with 30 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 2017.

Owners in deep leagues looking for speed and pop in place of Kiermaier should consider Shin-soo Choo of the Rangers. Choo has been on fire over the past two weeks, with nine runs, three home runs, two stolen bases, and a .308 batting average as the leadoff hitter for the Rangers.

Victor Martinez (DH – DET)

The scariest injury of the week goes to Victor Martinez of the Tigers, who experienced an irregular heartbeat after Thursday’s game against the Rays. Martinez underwent tests at the hospital and has since been released, but it is unclear when he will be able to resume baseball activities.

C.C. Sabathia (SP – NYY)

Sabathia was placed on the 10-day DL with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. After a few mediocre seasons, Sabathia has been a revelation for the surprise Yankees in 2017, with a team-high seven wins, including victories in each of his previous six starts.

The injury does not appear to be too serious, and Sabathia told reporters after the game on Saturday that he was already feeling better. Regardless, fantasy owners will be without Sabathia for at least two starts.

Aaron Hicks (OF – NYY)

Fellow Yankee Aaron Hicks missed the final three games of the week with soreness in his Achilles but was reportedly available for pinch-hitting duties for manager Joe Girardi. Mason Williams started Sunday’s game against the Athletics in place of Hicks, going 0-2 with a strikeout and three left on base. Look for Hicks to return to the lineup on Tuesday when the team hosts the Angels at Yankee Stadium.

Updating Previous Injuries

Dallas Keuchel (SP – HOU): Neck
Has not begun throwing as of 6/18, but is joining the team for the upcoming seven-game road trip. A start against Oakland in one of the final three games of next week is possible, but the fact that he has not started throwing is not a positive sign.

Carlos Rodon (SP – CWS): Biceps
Working on a rehab assignment in Triple-A, with a possible activation coming next week. Rodon is available in 60% of Yahoo leagues and could be a difference maker for owners looking for SP help.

Danny Duffy (SP – KC): Oblique
Duffy appears to be on track for a mid-July return from a Grade 1 oblique strain. He completed two throwing sessions over the past two weeks and did not report any issues.

Zach Britton (RP – BAL): Forearm
Pitching to live hitters and could start a rehab stint soon. An early to mid-July return a possibility.
