Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers Week 10

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers Week 10

A strategy that I have used with success in deeper leagues is streaming starting pitchers. That is, if you miss out on one or more of your high-end targets, you can piece together a fairly solid pitching staff by picking up guys each day and starting them in advantageous matchups to give you solid results.

Maybe you can’t replicate what Clayton Kershaw would do, but you can certainly put up some solid numbers if you pick your spots while using the picks you’d have spent on middling starters to beef up your offense. I personally find it to be a very fun strategy that requires some persistence and a bit of being the early bird who gets the worm, and the payoff can be particularly sweet.

We’re going to set a 30 percent threshold for ownership and we’ll use ESPN to get us there. Feel free to guide us in the comments section if you think there’s a better way.

Monday, June 5

Junior Guerra (MIL) – v. San Francisco Giants (17.7 percent ESPN)
Monday’s slate is mighty lean — just seven games overall — but we love this matchup. Guerra would have way higher ownership if he hadn’t missed virtually the entire season to this point, and he’s getting a downright predatory matchup here. No team has a worse wRC+ than the Giants this year (74). Guerra was terrific last time out, dicing six shutout innings against the Mets with just four hits allowed. He won’t be eligible for this list for too long.

Tuesday, June 6

Jaime Garcia (ATL) – v. Philadelphia Phillies (15.7 percent ESPN)
Not only has the Phillies offense been really bad this season (85 wRC+), but Garcia has quietly been really good for a Braves team that is scuffling. He’s got a 3.18 ERA and has held opposing offenses to just a .221 batting average this season. He’s allowed just one earned run over his last three starts combined, and for the month of May posted a sterling 2.45 ERA with just two home runs allowed. Strangely, this is just his third home start of the season (his 11th overall).

Wednesday, June 7

Mike Foltynewicz (ATL) – v. Philadelphia Phillies (12.9 percent ESPN)
We’ll jump on the Braves train for a second straight day, as the uber-talented young righty gets his crack at the sagging Phillies offense. Folty was absolutely terrific last time out against a strong Reds offense (102 wRC+), as he tossed seven shutout innings with just two hits and two walks to go with 10 strikeouts. The Phillies offense should be far less of a test, as Folty gets his second look at them this season. He held them to just one earned run in seven innings back on April 23, with nine strikeouts, two walks and just four hits allowed.

Thursday, June 8

Randall Delgado (ARI) – v. San Diego Padres (7.1 percent ESPN)
After two Braves, we’ll take a spin with a former Brave as the venerable Delgado — seriously, it feels like we’ve been talking about him forever — gets another start as he transitions into a rotation role. Not only does he get a fairly easy matchup — Padres team wRC+ is just 79 (28th in MLB) — but Delgado has been really good through his first two starts, allowing just a pair of earned runs over 9.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and just one walk. After throwing 61 and then 92 pitches, he should be up to a full 100 this time around.

Friday, June 9

Josh Tomlin (CLE) – v. Chicago White Sox (10.2 percent ESPN)
We know what the numbers say about Tomlin, and they aren’t pretty — 5.54 ERA, .297 BAA — But he’s also coming off back-to-back solid outings against the Royals and gets another iffy offense this time around (92 wRC+ for the White Sox). He’ll also be out for revenge after the Pale Hose crushed him for seven earned runs in just 1.2 innings back on April 13. Since that start he’s been…..well, not horrible: 4.17 ERA, 33-2 K/BB ratio in 49.2 innings.

Saturday, June 10

Junior Guerra (MIL) – @ Arizona Diamondbacks (17.7 percent ESPN)
With so many starters still unannounced, we’re riding the Guerra train twice this week. The Diamondbacks are a decent offense (97 wRC+), but we’re just not enthused with some of the other, already announced options. Seth Lugo against the Braves could be interesting, but with him on the comeback trail from the 60-day disabled list, expectations should be tempered.

Sunday, June 11

Dinelson Lamet (SDP) – v. Kansas City Royals (13.8 percent ESPN)
We don’t know a ton about Lamet through two big league starts, though he does have a 2.70 ERA with 16 strikeouts and three walks through just 10 innings. We’ll take a shot on that, especially since the Royals offense is awful (76 wRC+, second-worst in MLB).
