Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers Week 11

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers Week 11

A strategy that I have used with success in deeper leagues is streaming starting pitchers. That is, if you miss out on one or more of your high-end targets, you can piece together a fairly solid pitching staff by picking up guys each day and starting them in advantageous matchups to give you solid results.

Maybe you can’t replicate what Clayton Kershaw would do, but you can certainly put up some solid numbers if you pick your spots while using the picks you’d have spent on middling starters to beef up your offense. I personally find it to be a very fun strategy that requires some persistence and a bit of being the early bird who gets the worm, and the payoff can be particularly sweet.

We’re going to set a 30 percent threshold for ownership and we’ll use ESPN to get us there. Feel free to guide us in the comments section if you think there’s a better way.

Monday, June 12

Mike Foltynewicz (ATL): @ Washington Nationals (19.2 percent ESPN)

Folty has been low-key awesome this year and has delivered greatly for us lately in these streamer pieces. His last two starts have been brilliant, as he’s allowed zero earned runs with 14 strikeouts in as many innings. Why someone with a 3.48 ERA is owned in fewer than 20 percent of leagues makes no sense. There have been a few misfirings overall, but over his last 10 starts, seven of them have resulted in two or fewer earned runs. That’s legit.

Tuesday, June 13

Buck Farmer (DET): v. Arizona Diamondbacks (16.5 percent ESPN)

This is a bit of a stab in the dark — kind of like Dinelson Lamet last week, which didn’t work — but at least Farmer has seen some big-league time so he knows what to expect. Through two starts this year, Farmer hasn’t allowed an earned run and has 16 strikeouts with three walks in just 13 innings. To be fair, he has only faced the Trout-less Angels and White Sox so far this season, but he’s still spun some pretty good stuff. The 26-year-old righty has gotten, in a limited stretch mind you, a 16.9 percent whiff rate on his two-seam fastball and a 20.3 percent rate on his changeup.

Wednesday, June 14

Brian Johnson (BOS): @ Philadelphia Phillies (11.7 percent ESPN)

Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about Johnson, but he’s got good numbers and a really solid matchup (86 wRC+ for the Phillies). There also isn’t a ton to choose from on this Wednesday slate. Through three starts, Johnson has a 7.9 K/9 rate, 2.0 BB/9 and a 3.44 ERA. You can take a spin with Sam Gaviglio facing the Twins at home if you like, but that’s a much better offense he’s taking on (99 wRC+).

Thursday, June 15

Tyler Anderson (COL): v. San Francisco Giants (4.8 percent ESPN)

The results haven’t been pretty for Anderson, but hear us out on this one. He’s facing the worst offense in baseball (Giants wRC+ as a team is 76), and Anderson was absolutely terrific in May (2.55 ERA, 32 strikeouts in 24.2 innings in first four starts of the month) prior to getting beat up by the Mariners in his last start which sent him to the disabled list with a knee issue. He’s also been much better in his brief career at home (3.84 ERA) than on the road (5.09).

Friday, June 16

Joe Biagini (TOR): v. Chicago White Sox (10.7 percent ESPN)

Biagini is not only getting an iffy White Sox offense (92 wRC+), but has also looked solid since the Jays transitioned him to the rotation. In seven starts, Biagini has an identical ERA (3.38) as he had in his first 14 appearances of the season as a reliever, and has a 31-9 K/BB ratio in 37.1 innings with a .554 OPS against. He also gets a ton of grounders (59.4 percent). Feel free to spin Sean Newcomb for his second career start here, as well.

Saturday, June 17

Alex Meyer (LAA): v. Kansas City Royals (2.9 percent ESPN)

The giraffe-esque Meyer has been pretty solid for the Angels and is striking out everyone in sight for the most part. Over his last four starts, Meyer has a 2.01 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 22.1 innings. He also has 12 walks and has walked more than 6.0 batters per nine this season, so that is also part of the deal. Fortunately, he’s getting a Royals offense that not only isn’t good (77 wRC+, 29th in MLB) but isn’t patient (dead last in MLB with 6.6 percent walk rate).

Sunday, June 18

J.C. Ramirez (LAA): v. Kansas City Royals (25.6 percent ESPN)

The recent struggles of Ramirez are your gain, as a couple tough outings in June have dimmed his stock (10.61 ERA this month). He’s faced two decent offenses in the Twins and Tigers, but he’ll take a spin this time around against the awful Royals offense. Ramirez was terrific in May (2.67 ERA), and this might be all he needs to get back on track.
