Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers Week 13

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers Week 13

A strategy that I have used with success in deeper leagues is streaming starting pitchers. That is, if you miss out on one or more of your high-end targets, you can piece together a fairly solid pitching staff by picking up guys each day and starting them in favorable matchups to give you reliable results.

Maybe you can’t replicate what Clayton Kershaw would do, but you can certainly put up some solid numbers if you pick your spots while using the picks you’d have spent on middling starters to beef up your offense. I find it to be an enjoyable strategy that requires some persistence and a bit of being the early bird who gets the worm, but the payoff can be particularly sweet.

We’re going to set a 30 percent threshold for ownership, and we’ll use ESPN to get us there. Feel free to guide us in the comments section if you think there’s a better way.

Monday, June 26

Jordan Montgomery (NYY) – @ Chicago White Sox (37.2 percent ESPN)
This week is not great, and it gets off to an inauspicious start as I don’t see a single low-owned player I want to recommend for Monday. Those are getaway days and usually the biggest off-days of the week — just 16 teams are in action — and the slate is bad.

If you can get your hands on Montgomery, give him a spin. Not only is he pretty good — 3.74 ERA, .237 BAA, 71-26 K/BB ratio in 74.2 IP — but he’s also facing a pretty blase White Sox offense (95 wRC+).

Tuesday, June 27

Mike Clevinger (CLE) – v. Texas Rangers (10 percent ESPN)
Let’s get this out of the way first — the Rangers have had a brutal offense so far this season (24th in MLB with a 91 wRC+). That’s a huge help for the young Clevinger, who has been quite solid through nine appearances (eight starts): 3.86 ERA, .209 BAA, and 46 strikeouts in 42 innings.

He’s allowed three or fewer earned runs in three of his last four starts, and the Rangers matchup is good for another reason as well. Only four teams are striking out more frequently than they are (24 percent), and that’s Clevinger’s specialty.

Wednesday, June 28

Luis Perdomo (SD) – v. Atlanta Braves (4.1 percent ESPN)
Here’s another day that I don’t love, but the Braves’ offense isn’t very good (95 wRC+), and they have virtually no power (.150 ISO, 26th in baseball). Perdomo induces ample grounders (64.1 percent), and while his home run rate is a bit shaky (1.21 per nine innings), it does help to face such a punchless offense. I think this is a sneaky good matchup for the 24-year-old righty.

Thursday, June 29

Mike Foltynewicz (ATL) – @ San Diego Padres (18.4 percent ESPN)
If we’re going to dog on the Braves’ offense, we should also flip the script the next day when we recommend a Braves starter. The Padres are the worst offense in baseball (80 wRC+) and are striking out more than any other team but the Rays at 25.4 percent. We’ve been all over Folty for a while now, and for the most part — other than an eight-run outburst against the Nationals on June 12 — he’s rewarded our patience.

He’s allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts — with the Nats start being the outlier — and he’s coming off a dynamite start against the Brewers last time out where he fanned nine batters in five innings. He’s sneaky good.

Friday, June 30

Mike Montgomery (CHC) – @ Cincinnati Reds (13.9 percent ESPN)
Here’s another day we just don’t like. We’re left with Montgomery, who has only made three starts, but in 21 appearances has been somewhat hard to square up (just 38 hits allowed). He’s only made three starts, tossing four, five and then six innings with four total earned runs, and has struck out 13 batters against six walks in those 17 frames. It’s nothing terribly exciting, but this slate on Friday is BRU-TAL.

Saturday, July 1

Tyson Ross (TEX) – @ Chicago White Sox (15.1 percent ESPN)
Saturday might be even worse, as we’re taking a shot here with a guy who has an ERA over 9.00. With that said, Ross has a strong pedigree and is facing a rough White Sox team that is slated to start David Holmberg, who is no great shakes.

Ross was solid against the Mariners the first time out — and that’s a pretty good offense — before the Blue Jays ate his lunch last time out (seven earned runs in three innings). It’s too early to know what’s real and what isn’t here, but if you want to play it safe, sit out Saturday.

Sunday, July 2

Hyun-Jin Ryu (LAD) – @ San Diego Padres (10 percent ESPN)
Ryu has been pretty decent of late, and we love exploiting these Padres’ matchups. The last two starts have been particularly good for the lefty, as he’s allowed four earned runs over 10 innings with a 10-4 K/BB ratio.

He’s been hit-or-miss this season, and perhaps more miss with a 4.30 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and .278 BAA, but this is a bad offense he’s taking on that strikes out a ton. Give him a spin.
