DraftKings PGA Lineup Advice: RBC Canadian Open

DraftKings PGA Lineup Advice: RBC Canadian Open

Are you ready for the second Open in two weeks (three, if you count the European Tour’s Scottish Open three weeks ago)? OK! The PGA Tour heads north of the border to Glen Abbey Golf Club for the RBC Canadian Open.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed track hosts the Canadian Open for the third year in row. Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar are the biggest guns among the artillery this week, with a respectable lot otherwise, including most of the RBC-sponsored crew.

Generally, ball striking is key at this par-72 course that rewards neither bombers nor fairway finders. Precision on second shots is key, as is getting up and down, so as not to lose strokes at a venue that demands the winner go three or four under par each round.

If you want to go chalk…

Fade DJ. Too expensive. Will be too widely owned. Unless you’re 90 percent sure he’s going to win or make a million birdies and finish second, save your bones. A top-five finish isn’t out of the question certainly, but at nearly $1,000 more than the next highest-priced golfer, DJ has to win or place to return value.

Top-of-the-Line Plays

Matt Kuchar: $11,400
On paper, Kuch is doubtless a strong candidate. The only concern is a potential letdown after the, well, let down of failing to win The Open. If you believe he’s not too drained and can bounce back, don’t hesitate to roster Kuchar. Top-20 finisher in his last six starts. Top-10 finisher in his last three Canadian Opens. 25th on Tour in total strokes gained.

Recommended lineup

Tony Finau: $9,500
Fade those more expensive and pick up the guy who’s 14th in birdie average this season. Finau hasn’t finished outside the top 30 in his last four starts, and he did good work at Glen Abbey in 2015, where he finished 22nd. Fourth in strokes gained: off-the-tee, 29th in strokes gained: approach, eighth in strokes gained: tee-to-green, 19th in strokes gained: total. Translation: a solid core player who could very well win.

David Lingmerth: $8,800
A top-30 finisher in five of his last seven starts, Lingmerth will have had time to rest up and hone his craft following a missed cut at the Scottish Open two weeks ago. He finished 12th at Glen Abbey in 2013. 17th in strokes gained: putting.

Ian Poulter: $8,700
Poults hasn’t missed a cut in his last eight starts, and he finished top 15 at both the Scottish and British Opens. Sixth in strokes gained: approach. 11th in strokes gained: tee-to-green. 34th in total strokes gained.

Patrick Cantlay: $8,100
The Tour rookie has finished inside the top 40 in his last four PGA Tour starts. He’s picking up better than 1.5 strokes on the field average. In a weak field, Cantlay could do very well, and he’s a player whose ceiling we certainly have not yet seen. And he averages more than four birdies per round.

Chad Campbell: $7,500
Since he played the Barbasol Championship, where he finished inside the top 20, Chad Campbell doesn’t have to endure the east-to-west travel of the players who teed it up at Royal Birkdale. He’s finished 26th or better in his previous starts at Glen Abbey and ranks 39th in strokes gained: tee-to-green.

Stewart Cink: $7,400
Coming off two missed cuts, look for Stewart Cink to bounce back this week at a course where he finished fifth in 2015. 13th in strokes gained: approach, 20th in strokes gained: total, even a struggling Cink should fare well this week. 37th in birdie average makes him an attractive GPP play.
