DraftKings PGA Value Plays: British Open

DraftKings PGA Value Plays: British Open

There’s something special about The Open. Whether you enjoy the blistering winds coming off of the white-capped ocean waves, the wide open spaces and long native grass, or a pint at the local pub, it’s always exciting to see what unfolds across the pond. Royal Birkdale will host  2017’s third major and it comes with some juicy storylines. Will last week’s winner Bryson DeChambeau keep his momentum going? Will driver-less Phil Mickelson win another Open? Can Rory McIlroy rebound from a rough season? One thing is for sure, your DraftKings lineup needs some combination of experience overseas and momentum in order to have the best results for your wallet.

High-End Value Play of the Week

Justin Thomas ($8,200)
Thomas has had an epic 2017 season so far. With three wins and eight top-10 finishes, everything has gone right for the 24-year-old. He has missed two cuts in a row, but he always seems to rise to the occasion in big events. Thomas finished T22 at the Masters and T9 at the U.S. Open, so his prowess in majors is known. Couple that with an impressive 1.69 putting average (1st on Tour) and you have a recipe for his first major win. The greens are naturally slower overseas due to the type of grass, but Thomas will adapt. He will also look to take advantage of the wind as he ranks twelfth in driving distance. Look out for J.T. this week.

Momentum Play of the Week

Zach Johnson ($7,600)
You could also call this the “Past Champion Play of the Week,” but the 2015 Open Champion had a heck of a John Deere Classic last week. He finished T5 with a whopping 21 birdies for the week. Johnson is another cool customer, someone who is always in contention at majors and he weathered the storm overseas against the likes of Jordan Spieth and Jason Day back in 2015. He is playing well at the right time and should fair well at The Birk.

Contrarian Play of the Week

Jason Dufner ($6,600)
The cool, calm, and collected demeanor Dufner presents could help him stay in contention at an environment that promotes high-anxiety and angst. He’s missed two out of his last three cuts, with a win at The Memorial sandwiched in between. The traditional links-style course overseas is not long, but does have trouble spots everywhere. Dufner ranks 13th in approach proximity from 50-125 yards which many players face due to the amount of roll off the tee.

Don’t Forget about these Guys

  • Matt Kuchar ($7,200)
  • Joost Luiten ($6,700)
  • Francesco Molinari ($7,300)

Off the Cart Path

Danny Willett ($6,500)
The 2016 Masters Champion had a dreadful end of the summer last year by not winning a match in The Ryder Cup. Unfortunately for the talented Englishman, this season has not gone much better. He’s only made 5/13 cuts and has not rounded into his 2016 form yet. Don’t count him out. Royal Birkdale resides on his home soil and that usually triggers some unknown force for a lot of the Tour players. Willett feeds off crowds, especially his own.
