FanDuel PGA Lineup Advice: RBC Canadian Open

FanDuel PGA Lineup Advice: RBC Canadian Open

This week, PGA Tour action is taking place at the RBC Canadian Open. It’s the week after a Major Championship, which means that the general daily fantasy golf fans will be out, making your job a bit harder. So, before you draft a team at FanDuel, you need to know how their scoring is different from other DFS sites. Now that FanDuel has updated their scoring system, you can see that they really value golfers that make the cut. To help you out, I’ve put together a roster, breaking down some of the key elements in the section below. It places a large emphasis on making the cut and each golfer’s likelihood of doing so. The dollar amount included is the golfer’s salary on FanDuel only, so if you are drafting a team on another site, this lineup will not be as helpful to you. Hopefully, this will help you draft a stronger team than your competition, giving you an edge even in a tougher field.

Recommendations

  • Matt Kuchar: $10,100
  • J.B. Holmes: $8,600
  • Adam Hadwin: $8,000
  • Graeme McDowell: $7,300
  • Patrick Cantlay: $7,200
  • Graham DeLaet: $6,800
  • Kevin Tway: $6,700
  • Brian Gay: $5,200

Remaining Salary: $100

Reasoning

Matt Kuchar had an impressive tournament last weekend at the Open Championship but ended up finishing second to Jordan Spieth. In this field, there’s no Spieth to contend with, although Dustin Johnson is ranked higher than Kuchar going into this one. The reason for drafting Kuchar over Johnson is twofold. One, Kuchar is a lot cheaper than Johnson. Two, Kuchar is playing the best golf of his life right now, while Johnson has really struggled of late. That makes Kuchar an easy number one pick going into this tournament.

Holmes and Hadwin are not obvious picks. However, their average fantasy point total when compared with their rate of making the cut in the past helps separate them from the competition. Remember that at FanDuel you want golfers who have a higher likelihood of making the cut. Holmes has made 15 out of 18 cuts and Hadwin has made 17 out of 21. Hadwin is the weaker of the two, and you could swap him out for Gary Woodland and save an extra $100 in salary. Hadwin’s fantasy average is slightly higher than Woodland’s, though.

Cantlay seems like a hidden gem in this lineup. With seven of seven cuts made, he’s one of the more consistent golfers in the field. His salary puts him in the bottom half of this roster, though. He might be too good to be true, or he might be the best value pick of the tournament. At this price, he’s not much of a risk, and he has a huge chance of being an asset to your team.

The final controversial pick here is Brian Gay. He’s incredibly cheap at $5,200, and this affords you more leeway at the top of your roster. He’s also a standout compared to the rest of the golfers around him when looking at salary. He’s made 14 out of 21 cuts this season (67 percent) which is close to the 75 percent standard you should be targeting, and his average fantasy point contribution per tournament is 53.9. That’s considerably higher than those around him, who are all in the low-to-mid 40s. You do have an extra $100 in your salary with this roster, and it’s possible to shuffle a few other picks if you are not comfortable drafting a golfer under $6,000, but this seems like a decent value play to me.
