DraftKings MLB Lineup Advice: Monday (8/14)

DraftKings MLB Lineup Advice: Monday (8/14)

We’ve got 10 games to work with tonight in our daily fantasy baseball slate. Fantasy football is clearly moving to the forefront of the industry, but there’s still plenty of baseball left and action to be had in fantasy baseball. Let’s take a look at some top plays for DraftKings.

Weather Situations to Monitor:

  • Reds @ Cubs
  • Braves @ Rockies

Pitchers

Jose Quintana (CHC) : $11,600 vs. CIN
DraftKings made the decision a bit tougher with their pricing and while there’s always a chance Zack Greinke tosses a strong outing against Houston, I’m not interested in going down that path tonight. That shifts us to Quintana, who has been unspectacular with his new team through five starts. He came out of the gates blazing with 12 strikeouts against the Orioles a month ago, but things haven’t been quite as rosy since that start. That being said, options are extremely limited at pitcher tonight, so keep your fingers crossed that the weather cooperates in Chicago tonight. The Reds have been in the top half of the league against lefties over the past couple of weeks, but their strikeout rate has spiked, so that could give Quintana a boost. There will be risks involved with pitching across the board, and Quintana is no exception. Power will be the concern tonight, as Quintana continues to be plagued by the long ball, while the Reds can supply plenty of pop against lefties. Provided he can keep the ball in the park, Quintana should be able to produce a relevant fantasy outing.

Jerad Eickhoff (PHI) : $8,000 @ SD
Eickhoff sticks out as a strong tournament play in a good pitching environment this evening. The Padres have slid back down the rankings after a short run, as they rank 22nd against right-handed pitching over the past two weeks, with a 24.8% strikeout rate. Control is the issue with Eickhoff (3.56 BB/9), and if he can limit the free passes, he possesses just enough strikeout upside (8.16 K/9) to merit consideration in GPP play tonight.

Adam Conley (MIA): $5,800 vs. SF
This is a site-specific play, as you’re forced to roster two pitchers on DraftKings, which puts Conley in play at this price. He’s a volatile asset and tough to trust overall, but the matchup is somewhat appealing at home against the Giants. While they don’t ststrike out ton, the Giants don’t strike a ton of fear into opposing pitchers, and you don’t need an ace-type outing at this price from Conley.

Rays Stack @ Blue Jays vs. Nick Tepesch

Corey Dickerson (OF): $3,600
Logan Morrison (1B): $3,600
Evan Longoria (3B): $3,100

The Rays have been a mess over the past month, so hopefully a, trip to Toronto against a bad pitcher in Nick Tepesch can cure what ails them. Tepesch has pitched all of 10 innings at the major league level since 2014, after missing all of 2015 due to an injury. He’s bounced around among several teams since then, pitching mostly at the Triple A level, and he did not impress at any of his stops. The Rays are all easily attainable in terms of price due to their recent cold stretch, which will allow you to spend up at other positions.

Rockies Stack vs. Julio Teheran

Charlie Blackmon (OF): $5,800
Gerardo Parra (OF): $4,300
Jonathan Lucroy (C): $3,500

The Rockies return home to face Julio Teheran, who has been an absolute mess this season for the Braves. Teheran has really struggled at home this season, but those splits may not matter tonight as he will be forced to pitch at Coors Field. The Rockies have been a middling offense against right-handed pitchers for most of the season, but they do still have some assets worth targeting. Nolan Arenado could be out with a hand injury, but Charlie Blackmon is the obvious target here, as he continues to tear the cover off the ball. Jonathan Lucroy has also been producing for his new team as of late, and he checks in with a very affordable price tag. Gerardo Parra is another appealing option, as he provides relatively cheap exposure to an offense who sports an implied run total in the mid-6s.

Tigers @ Rangers Stack vs. Martin Perez

Justin Upton (OF): $4,500
Nicholas Castellanos (3B): $4,100
Mikie Mahtook (OF): $3,800

The three hitters listed above have all fared well over the past couple of weeks, and they are poised to continue that success tonight against Martin Perez. Perez has allowed a .373 wOBA in 97.2 IP to right-handed hitters this season, with his hard minus soft contact rate at 23.9%. This is a good hitting environment for the Tigers, who currently sport an implied team total over five runs. I left Ian Kinsler (hand), Miguel Cabrera (back) and Victor Martinez (slumping) off, but I don’t mind sprinkling one or two of the veterans in if you’re entering multiple lineups.

Hot Hitter

Nelson Cruz (OF) : $5,400 vs. BAL
Only Tim Beckham is hotter over the past two weeks than Cruz, and I love Cruz tonight as I think he could go overlooked in tournament play. Kevin Gausman has allowed a .350 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season, with a line drive rate that is pushing 25%. Cruz sports a .554 wOBA/.553 ISO over the past two weeks, which includes seven home runs over that span, so don’t shy away from the veteran slugger tonight.

Underpriced Hitter

Tim Beckham (BAL): $3,700 @ SEA
Speaking of Beckham, he feels a bit too cheap over on DraftKings tonight considering what he’s done over the past two weeks. He’s posted a .569 wOBA to go along with a .377 ISO over that span, and he’s clearly too cheap given that production. He should be able to keep it rolling tonight against a mediocre pitcher in Yovani Gallardo, who doesn’t strike out many hitters (6.39 K/9) and sports an xFIP over five. There are 11 hitters priced above Beckham, which is a mistake worth taking advantage of this evening.

Batter vs. Pitcher

Josh Donaldson (3B) : $4,500 vs. Jake Odorizzi
Donaldson is scorching hot at the plate right now, as he’s posted a .538 wOBA and .541 ISO over the past two weeks. He stands to keep his success going tonight, as he faces a pitcher who has allowed a whopping 14 home runs to right-handed hitters in just 58.1 IP. Furthermore, while Donaldson has just five hits in 22 career at-bats (.227 AVG) against Jake Odorizzi, four of those hits were home runs, so I think he’s a good bet for another at home this evening.
