DraftKings MLB Lineup Advice: Wednesday (8/23)

Wednesday greets us with a healthy 13 game slate to work with, and there are plenty of good situations to target this evening. Weather doesn’t look to be an issue tonight, so it’s all hands on deck with no worrying leading up to lineup lock. Let’s take a look at some top plays for DraftKings.

Pitchers

Corey Kluber (CLE): $12,700 vs. BOS
Kluber brings his elite 12.17 K/9 strikeout rate into a home tilt against the Red Sox, who have been better recently against right-handed pitching than they have been on the season. They do strikeout below league average, so that’s a knock to Kluber’s overall stock, albeit a slight one. He is healthy by all accounts after having to leave his last start due to an ankle injury, so I look for a strong outing from Cleveland’s ace tonight.

Marcus Stroman (TOR): $11,500 @ TB
Stroman’s price actually ticked down $100 from his last start against this same Tampa team last week, which is a bit surprising after he struck out seven hitters while allowing just two earned runs over 6.1 IP. He isn’t a high strikeout pitcher (7.4 K/9), but his profile does get a boost against the Rays, who strike out well above league average against right-handed pitching. Stroman does an excellent job of generating ground balls (62.6% GB rate), which helps to limit power. He’s in a good position tonight to repeat his success from last week.

Luke Weaver (STL) : $6,900 vs. SD
If you’re searching for some value for a second pitcher in tournaments, give Weaver a look tonight. He will face the Padres, who strike out at a high clip and have not found much success overall against right-handed pitching. Weave can struggle with his command at times (3.86 BB/9), but he does sport a solid strikeout rate (8.82 K/9), which gives him nice upside. I’d expect Weaver to be fairly popular given the price and the opponent, but the value he provides in an effort to spend elsewhere is meaningful tonight.

Diamondbacks Stack @ Mets vs. Chris Flexen

Paul Goldschmidt (1B): $5,500
J.D. Martinez (OF): $5,100
Jake Lamb (3B): $4,900
David Peralta (OF): $4,100

Let’s get this out of the way right out of the gate. Chris Flexen has a walk rate (6.55 BB/9) that is higher than his strikeout rate (5.73 K/9). How’s that for context? That’s simply not going to get it done at the major league level, but the Mets are extremely thin in their starting rotation (still or again??), so their hand is forced at this point. The Diamondbacks continue to be maddeningly inconsistent offensively, but with their studs Paul Goldschmidt and J.D. Martinez showing signs of life last night, they could be on the verge of turning things in the right direction.

Yankees Stack @ Tigers vs. Jordan Zimmermann

Gary Sanchez (C): $4,700
Brett Gardner (OF): $4,600
Aaron Judge (OF): $4,600
Didi Gregorius (SS): $4,100
Chase Headley (1B/3B): $3,700

Jordan Zimmermann continues to be a gas can for the Tigers, so it’s tough not to love the Yankees’ bats tonight. Gary Sanchez has a whopping seven home runs over his last 10 games (39 at-bats), so he’s the obvious target to get things started. Aaron Judge continues to struggle at the plate, but his mammoth power upside is always worth targeting, especially against a bad pitcher. The other complimentary pieces are also in play if you want to roll out a full stack, as I expect a lot of runs to be scored tonight.

Braves Low Owned Stack vs. Erasmo Ramirez

Freddie Freeman (1B/3B): $4,800
Ender Inciarte (OF): $4,300
Brandon Phillips (2B): $4,000
Nick Markakis (OF): $3,900

The Braves will face a mediocre pitcher in Erasmo Ramirez tonight, and I like them in tournaments at home tonight as a result. They’ve turned things around offensively against right-handed pitching over the last two weeks, and I think there are a few ways you can attack this situation tonight. Freddie Freeman is the obvious play as part of a full stack, or as a standalone play, but don’t overlook the other pieces of this lineup, as most are clicking right now. Another way to attack this is by utilizing a few of the lesser known commodities like Ozzie Albies or Dansby Swanson, who in particular is on a roll after a dreadful stretch that ultimately ended in him being sent to Triple A.

Twins Left-Handed Batters @ White Sox vs. James Shields

Eddie Rosario (OF): $4,600
Max Kepler (OF): $3,800 (check status)
Jorge Polanco (SS): $3,600

James Shields hasn’t been a good pitcher for a while, but he’s been particularly bad against lefties this season. In 33 IP against left-handed hitters, Shields has dished out 13 home runs while allowing a .439 wOBA and a 36.4% hard contact rate. Eddie Rosario has been rolling over the past 10 games, as he’s collected 14 hits in 39 at-bats (.359 AVG) to go along with two home runs. Max Kepler‘s power is certainly worth targeting as well if he returns from an illness this evening. Finally, Polanco is a strong value given the matchup and his recent production (.278 AVG, three home runs over last 36 at-bats).

Giancarlo Stanton (OF): $5,700 @ PHI vs. Mark Leiter

I don’t know how Stanton can be faded right now, as he continues to crush everything in sight. Mark Leiter has a decent strikeout rate (8.06 K/9), but I don’t think there’s much to fear overall with a pitcher who possesses an xFIP of 4.6.

Hot Hitter

Eugenio Suarez (3B): $4,200 vs. CHC
Suarez has found a lot of success against left-handed pitching this season, as evidenced by his .410 wOBA/.255 ISO. He face Mike Montgomery tonight, who is an average pitcher at best, and is filling in the rotation for Jon Lester. It would be nice to see him inside the top five of the batting order, but I think he’s a viable option regardless of where he ultimately lands, as he’s been on a roll as of late. Over the last two weeks, Suarez is hitting .405 with am OPS of 1.416 and a .452 ISO. He’s seeing the ball well during that span, as his walk rate is at 23.7%, while his strikeout rate sits at 13.6%. Ride the hot streak in a plus matchup tonight.

Batter vs. Pitcher

Brian Dozier (2B): $5,300 @ CWS
Not only is Dozier worth targeting due to his recent play, but he always draws a juicy matchup against a pitcher who he’s found a lot of success against in the past. In 32 career at-bats against James Shields, Dozier has collected 12 hits (.375 AVG), which includes four home runs. Shields struggles with the long ball, and with the park favoring right-handed power, don’t overlook a hot Dozier in a good matchup.
