Players To Fade On DraftKings: Week 3

Sometimes winning big in Daily Fantasy is not about who you roster, sometimes it is who you don’t roster. There are many different reasons to “fade” a player. Here are a few of the reasons I will use when fading a player from my lineups:

  • Bad matchup
  • High ownership with an equal or better alternative
  • DraftKings price

Here are this week’s fades…

Quarterback

Tom Brady (NE) vs HOU $7,700
After Brady’s performance last weekend he will likely have inflated ownership, but as the highest priced QB on the slate and a matchup with the Texans, I think he is fade-able. Over the last two seasons, Brady has matched up with the Texans twice. He averaged a mere 256 yards and two TDs in those games. At $7,700, he is just too rich for my blood.

Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) @ CHI $6,200
For fear of sounding like a broken record, here we go again, “fade Roethlisberger on the road.” Yes, I know it’s the Bears, and yes, I know they rank 24th in the league in pass defense, but I told everyone to fade him in Week 1 against the Browns, and no one listened to me. Big Ben is just not the same QB on the road as he is at home and there is five years worth of evidence to prove it.

Running Back

LeSean McCoy (BUF) vs DEN $7,000
This is an easy one for me. Anyone that watched the Broncos shut down the Dallas Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliot last week will know not to roster McCoy this week. I can see him being used in a GPP as a high-upside player that should be lower owned, but the Broncos have only allowed 104 yards rushing in two games — the fewest in the league outside of the Dolphins and Bucs who have played one fewer game than everyone else.

Wide Receiver

Julio Jones (ATL) @ DET $9,300
Jones has 14 targets in two games so far this year. Here is a list of a few of the players that have more targets than Jones to this point in the season:

Does that sound like a player you want to pay $9,300 for? I know. I get it. It’s Julio Jones and he can go off at any time, but I have a hard time paying that much for a player only getting seven targets a game on average. I can see using him in a GPP and hoping he has a huge game, but for cash games, I’m spending my money elsewhere.

Brandin Cooks (NE) vs HOU $7,300
I have no idea why Cooks is still $7,300. He has five receptions through two games despite Tom Brady throwing it 75 times. Despite losing Julian Edelman before the season and only having three wide receivers dressed for last week’s game, Cooks has caught only seven percent of Tom Brady’s passes so far this year. Say it with me, “F.A.D.E. Fade.”

Tight End

Coby Fleener (NO) @ CAR $$4,100
Fleener has been a popular choice the last two weeks as a cheap TE, but going on the road to Carolina has me fading him. The Panthers, with Luke Kuechly in the lineup, are one of the best teams against tight ends in the league. It’s a small sample size so far this season, but there is no reason to think that has changed as they are only giving up 4.5 DK points to opposing tight ends. If you also include Drew Brees’ well-documented struggles on the road, Fleener will not find his way into any of my lineups this weekend.

Defense

Packers vs CIN $3,400
The Packers are tied for the sixth most expensive defense on the slate. I get it, the Bengals are coming to town and they have yet to score a touchdown this season, but I expect the Bengals to take an extremely conservative approach to this game. The Packers can be run on, allowing over five yards per carry so far this season, and I expect the Bengals to attempt to run the ball a ton to avoid putting the ball in Andy Dalton’s hands too much. That’ll keep the score down somewhat, but will not allow for any sack and interception opportunities, which is what you need to get from a higher priced defense.
