Quarterback and Tight End Streamers: Week 3

Quarterback and Tight End Streamers: Week 3

Injuries and disappointing fantasy performances dominated the headlines once again in Week 2 of the NFL season. There were a total of 14 quarterbacks who managed to score more than 15 fantasy points, including five of them topping 20 points. To no one’s surprise, Tom Brady led the way and bounced back from an awful Week 1 showing, racking up 30.8 points versus the soft New Orleans defense. Alex Smith, who was featured in last week’s streaming article, finished in the top 10 in back-to-back weeks.

At tight end, there were only seven players with 15 or more fantasy points. Shockingly, it was Jason Witten who stole the show yet again. The ageless wonder racked up 10 receptions against the Broncos, while scoring a touchdown in consecutive weeks to open up the season. Evan Engram performed the best out of TEs featured in last week’s streaming article. The New York tight end was impressive with four receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown, placing him in the top 10 among his peers.

As we look ahead to Week 3, remember that in order to qualify for this list the selected players must be owned in fewer than 30 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues.

Quarterback Streaming Options

QB Stream of the Week: Jay Cutler (MIA) at New York Jets (29% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Jay Cutler headlines the list as my QB stream of the week in back-to-back segments. He had a somewhat disappointing day for fantasy teams in Week 2, but his overall numbers were quite positive. Cutler completed 73 percent of his passes for 230 yards and one touchdown. The 34-year-old should only get better as he continues to gel and build chemistry with his teammates. Furthermore, things should be a little easier this week when the Dolphins travel to New York. The Jets are allowing nearly 20 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, which puts them in the bottom three of the NFL in that category.

Trevor Siemian (DEN) at Buffalo (13% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
One of the most pleasant surprises through the first two weeks of the season has to be Denver Broncos quarterback, Trevor Siemian. The 2015 seventh-round pick is thriving in the underdog role and is currently ranked second in fantasy points with 45. He also leads the entire NFL in touchdown passes with six. Siemian’s Week 2 matchup isn’t ideal as the Bills are allowing fewer than 11 points per game to the quarterback position. However, that stat is a bit misleading when you consider that Buffalo has played Josh McCown and a struggling Cam Newton so far. Any way you slice it, there are worse things you could do then go with arguably the hottest quarterback in the league.

DeShone Kizer (CLE) at Indianapolis (10% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
I don’t feel nearly as comfortable with Kizer as I do with Cutler or Siemian, but this is a nice matchup-based sleeper option if you are in desperate need of a QB this week. The Colts are ranked 21st against the pass, allowing 16 fantasy points and 325 passing yards per game. The rookie quarterback has struggled through his first two starts, throwing four interceptions along with just one touchdown pass. However, keep in mind that he has faced two very good pass defenses. Things should be a lot easier with Indy on the schedule this week, especially if Vontae Davis is slated to miss his third straight game.

Tight End Steaming Options

TE Stream of the Week: Jared Cook (OAK) at Washington (24% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Through the first two weeks of the season, Cook has had a healthy dose of receptions (9) and targets (11) with his new team. Given how unpredictable the TE position has been this season, Cook is someone who gets a healthy amount of targets and is worth monitoring in your leagues. If you are a Greg Olsen owner or are just in need of a tight end for this week, now is the perfect time to pick up and start the nine-year veteran. He faces a Washington defense that has struggled against the TE position, allowing over 10 fantasy points per game.

Zach Miller (CHI) vs. Pittsburgh (5% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Another tight end that has eaten up a large amount of targets so far this season is Zach Miller. Last week I highlighted the significant list of injuries at the WR position for the Bears, and explained that Miller could be one of the main beneficiaries, and so far that has held true. At 32 years of age, Miller is not flashy but he gets the job done. Last season the Chicago tight end was on pace to finish in the top seven at his position before getting injured, and this year he is quietly off to another strong start. Miller ranks fifth among TEs in targets with 15 and also leads his team in that category among both wide receivers and tight ends. Despite not scoring a touchdown, he is also performing as a borderline low-end TE1. Miller is a strong streaming option based on volume, and he should remain that way with limited receiving options in Chicago.

Benjamin Watson (BAL) at Jacksonville (1% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
After being non-existent in Week 1 with zero targets in the passing game, Watson posted a strong outing versus the Browns. The Georgia product compiled eight receptions for 91 yards, which ranked fourth among TEs in Week 2 with 17.1 fantasy points. Joe Flacco has traditionally targeted his tight ends often, so this could become more of a trend for Watson moving forward, particularly in favorable matchups. This week, the Ravens play a Jaguars’ defense that ranks 30th in the NFL in fantasy points against to the tight end position. With just one percent ownership in all of Yahoo leagues, Watson is a very sneaky streaming option, capable of putting up TE1 numbers. The type of stream that could make you look like a genius. Don’t worry, we’ll let you take all of the credit!
