Sunday Stash Report: Week 2 (Fantasy Football)

Sunday Stash Report: Week 2 (Fantasy Football)

The Sunday Stash Report debuts ahead of week two as fantasy owners have now had a full week of action to see how many of their late round fliers never made it off the ground (looking at you Rex Burkhead). The goal here is to put a guy or two on the back of your roster that isn’t necessarily going to help you this week, but rather next week or shortly thereafter.

Markus Wheaton (WR – CHI)
The Bears are running out of wide receivers and people seem to have forgotten about Markus Wheaton, who, if you recall, got a bigger contract this offseason than Jeremy Maclin. Wheaton has been out with a broken finger, but is close to returning. He could be back Week 3, and if not then likely Week 4. He also could immediately step into a starting role. I’m not saying you can hang your season on this guy, but he could be a WR4 out of the gate with WR3 upside. At the very least, he’s probably better than the last guy on your bench.

Rex Burkhead (RB – NE)
Yeah, I took a jab at Burkhead in the opener, but if he was dropped in your league, he’s not the worst stash. The Patriots are running out of WRs. Malcolm Mitchell and Julian Edelman are on IR. Danny Amendola already has multiple injuries and will miss at least Week 2. Phillip Dorsett has no business being in the NFL because he is terrible at football. The Patriots are down to Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan as their only real WRs. Rex Burkhead has elite pass-catching ability. The Patriots play the Saints this week. We saw Burkhead get red zone looks and designed pass plays for him against the Chiefs. In this high-scoring affair, Burkhead could catch a handful of passes and with his talent, he will be an intriguing option on next week’s waiver wire. If someone grew impatient after one game or just couldn’t afford to hang onto him, he still has the same ceiling he had when he was being drafted in the 10th round.

Mike Tolbert (RB – BUF)
I really, really, really hope that I am completely wrong on this one. There is only one reason to stash the Kool Aid Man and that’s in the event of a LeSean McCoy injury. I love Shady and have him on multiple teams, but the reality is that Sean McDermott seems intent on giving McCoy all the touches he can handle. That’s great for fantasy, but not great for McCoy’s long-term health. He is already dealing with very minor dings to his wrist and groin. While those are non-issues currently, they are reminders of Shady’s fragility. If Shady goes down, Tolbert will be the presumed replacement. He won’t suddenly become a feature back, but he’ll be part of a committee and he’ll be the one getting the goal line touches. His ceiling won’t be high, but us fantasy players are on the constant lookout for serviceable RBs and that’s exactly how I would describe Tolbert in the event of a Shady injury.

Evan Engram (TE – NYG)
Why is he not owned in more than 50% of leagues? Engram’s athleticism is off the charts. He’s not really a TE. He’s a WR playing TE. Engram is a massive human with a massive catch radius. He can make plays most other TEs cannot. The Giants will probably get Odell Beckham back this week, but he won’t be 100% for at least another few weeks (source: science). Brandon Marshall is done. Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis are okay, but neither possesses the playmaking ability of E Double. Engram’s 8.4 PPR points in Week 1 were more than the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, and Martellus Bennett. All it will take is one touchdown and you’ll find Engram on next week’s waiver pickups columns on all the fantasy sites.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins (TE – NYJ)
People have overlooked ASJ because he’s been around the league a bit, got suspended for two games, and, oh yeah, he’s on the Jets. But lest we forget he’s an athletic freak and is going to be the starting TE on a team with a dearth of pass catchers beginning in Week 3. I think you will start hearing his name next week. Get ahead of the curve and stash him the week before he returns. Given the state of the TE right now, he could easily be a TE1.

DeShone Kizer (QB – CLE)
This is not an endorsement of DeShone Kizer the quarterback. This is an indictment on the Indianapolis Colts defense, whom Kizer gets the pleasure of facing Week 3. If you are streaming QBs or trying to fix an Andrew Luck problem, stash Kizer before this week’s game as his abilities translate better for fantasy than real life with his rushing prowess padding his fantasy numbers.

Cleveland Browns (DEF)
How about that? The Cleveland Browns! They showed some moxie against the Steelers in Week 1. Have you seen their upcoming schedule? They travel to Baltimore this week, which isn’t a terrible spot for them as it stands, but the next four weeks; at Indianapolis, home vs Cincinnati, home vs the Jets, at Houston. The Browns are going to be a sneaky useful defense through Week 6.
