Welcome back! On the Dynasty Waiver Wire I try to list every column in the order I prefer players. But they are not ranked through the columns.

Timing is everything, and being early is the same as being wrong. This is solid fantasy football advice to keep in mind. However, I often find value in reversing generic advice if it’s being applied too broadly. We tend to think very carefully about trades, but a lot of dynasty teams move players on and off the waiver wire on a whim. If you want an edge from deep researching depth carts, then you have to be as thoughtful about waiver claims as most players are about their trades. You also have to be willing to wait long after any initial excitement dies down.

On the other hand, rooting for underdogs is one of the things I enjoy most about fantasy football. Rostering the deeper players adds to this experience. We have had some great hits this year already. But, remember that the majority of players on the Dynasty Waiver Wire are underdogs, and Rudy never won anyone a fantasy championship.

Here is the Week 9 Dynasty Waiver Wire.

Tyrell Williams (WR – LAC)
I’ve seen him hit a few waiver wires in some less sharp and/or shallower leagues so I wanted to bring him up. You just don’t come across many cleaner prospects as Tyrell on the waiver wire. Despite his poor campaign this season – including stepping out of bounds this week to negate a large gain against the Patriots – he remains a great dynasty asset. Undrafted in 2015, he signed with the Chargers as an Undrafted Free Agent (UDFA.) He was on the active roster by the end of the year. When Keenan Allen was injured the following year Tyrell leaped into relevance, finishing as the wide receiver 15 according to pro-football-reference.com. The biggest questions on his profile were his draft capital and raw nature as a receiver coming from West Oregon. Both things are negated by his 2016 performance. Just in case, however, remember that he has a 51st percentile College Dominator and is an 82nd percentile SPARQ-x athlete. That includes a 98th percentile Catch Radius in a frame that measures 6’3″ and 204 lbs. He’s having a bad year, but you won’t find a better player on the waiver wire the rest of this year.

T.J. Jones (WR – DET)
T.J. Jones managed four receptions for 88 yards on eight targets in the Lions Week 8 loss to the Steelers. While firmly in the wide receiver three position on his own team, Jones does have a more interesting profile for dynasty then some may assume at first glance. A sixth-round pick by the Lions in 2014, he has been irrelevant in fantasy so far –  he’s finished as wide receiver 137 in 2015 and wide receiver 153 2016. However, he had a 61st College Dominator Rating coming out of Notre Dame and ran a 4.48 (71st percentile) 40-time at the combine. At 6′ and 188 lbs, he is slight for an NFL receiver and also measured poorly in Burst (23rd percentile) and Catch Radius (19th percentile). He does have a high Agility score in the 64th percentile however and  playerprofiler.com compares his overall advanced stats and metrics to Jeremy Maclin. His recent performance could signal that he has improved his strength from his combine numbers and, at age 25, managed to put his experience on the Lions roster to good use. If he gets more opportunity in the future we could hear his name again.

Dion Sims (TE – CHI)
Zach Miller is an incredible athlete and a great tight end. His role on the Bears this season had been more like a wide receiver, and he was doing it well at the age of 33 weighing 240 lbs. His injury is upsetting, and I hope his surgery and recovery go well. But his loss does open up an opportunity. Some might be more interested in the “hot name” rookie behind Miller on the depth chart, Adam Shaheen. But I’m more interested in Dion Sims. Despite the great season rookie tight ends are having this year they still, on average, take a long time to become consistent fantasy players. Sims, on the other hand, already has the experience needed and, while not quite as athletic as Zach Miller, is a very good athlete himself. He has great size for the position at 6’5″ and 262 lbs and has been productive to an extent this year (catching 2 receptions on 4 targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in Week 6). The Bears new rookie quarterback finds value, like so many before him, in the high percentage passes toward the position. Sims is capable of being a productive (and fantasy relevant) tight end in Zach Miller’s absence. Anyone interested in depth, or a replacement for Miller, at the position, should pick him up. At 26, he’s just entering the prime for fantasy production at the position, so I’d have no fear about rostering him in dynasty.

Erik Swoope (TE – IND)
I don’t want to invest in the Colts right now, but in the wake of Jack Doyle‘s solid season and Week 8 blowup game, it’s worth remembering that Erik Swoope is a promising prospect as well. He went down with a meniscus injury before the season began but both he and Doyle were competitive for fantasy last year. Swoope played basketball at the University of Miami and not football, so we don’t have a lot of college numbers to evaluate him. What we do know is he is 6’5″ tall and weighs 257 lbs. Like Doyle, Swoope has great size for the position. What’s more the one athletic measurable we have (his 40-time) is significantly better than Doyle’s. As a team, they are already prone to heavy TE use, so they could find a use for both Swoope and Doyle in the future.

Brian Quick (WR – WAS)
Brian Quick is a name I always keep in mind when looking for dynasty stashes. Outside of that one stretch in 2014 where he was fantasy relevant on the (then) St. Louis Rams – where he picked up 375 yards and 3 touchdowns in 7 games before his season was ended by shoulder surgery he’s been largely invisible. Buried on the Rams depth chart the following year without any explanation he’s now on the back end of Washington’s. But with a 93rd percentile College Dominator (from Appalachian State, but still…) and an 84th percentile Height Adjusted Speed Score, Quick could produce again somewhere down the line. At 6’3″ with a 220 lbs with a 7 game history of production at the NFL level, I’m willing to burn a roster spot him on the right situation.

Jarius Wright (WR – MIN)
So far in his career, Stefon Diggs has not played through injury well. When healthy, he is a must-start superstar. But he’s a risky player when under a questionable tag. While Mike Williams, Laquon Treadwell and Michael Floyd often get more hype in these situations I’m actually more interested in Jarius Wright. (Especially since the other 3 are unlikely to be on the waiver wire if Jarius Wright is a potential waiver claim.) As of right now, it’s been a mixture of all three receiving snaps and targets so no one has benefitted enough to be a fantasy start. However, he is the only one of the 3 to catch a touchdown this year and leads all three in yards (57) the last three weeks while Stefon Diggs has been injured. I’m not kicking anyone off my roster for Wright and I expect Diggs to be back soon (healthy and ready to ball out again). But Wright is a name to keep in mind in deeper leagues if Diggs continues to miss time.

Thanks for stopping by this week, and good luck out there in week nine.
