FanDuel NBA Lineup Advice: Tuesday (10/17)

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the NBA FanDuel lineup article. The NBA season is officially back as we kick off the 2017-2018 season with a fun doubleheader. There are several interesting storylines with the first game of the night between the Celtics and the Cavaliers and it will be interesting to see how the new look Rockets stack up against the juggernaut Warriors in the nightcap. Let’s go ahead and take a look at my lineup for tonight’s slate.

Point Guard

Kyrie Irving (BOS) : 8,200 at CLE
The summer saw a ton of drama in Cleveland which ultimately resulted in a blockbuster trade headlined by Kyrie heading to Boston and Isaiah Thomas coming to Cleveland. Thomas is going to be out until at least January, but Irving is going to be ready for revenge against his old team right out of the gate. The move to Boston will likely increase Irving’s usage percentage since he will now be the best player on his team. Irving will likely do everything he can to have a huge game and I do not expect him to disappoint.

Derrick Rose (CLE) : $5,500 vs. BOS
Prior to the Cavs trading for Thomas, the Cavs signed Rose. As I mentioned previously, Thomas is going to be out for awhile so Rose will be the starting point guard until at least January. There is some talk that the Cavs plan to take Rose out early in the first quarter so that he can run the point for the second unit. I actually think this benefits Rose greatly since his usage percentage will be much higher on the second unit than it will be with LeBron, Kevin Love and Dwyane Wade on the first unit.

Shooting Guard

Klay Thompson (GSW) : $6,800 vs. HOU
Some people questioned whether or not the addition of Kevin Durant to the Warriors would hinder Thompson’s usage. Although it went down slightly, the overall increase in efficiency was enough to make up for it. Nearly all of Thompson’s 2016-2017 numbers were identical to his 2015-2016 numbers and  I do not expect this season to be any different. I imagine that Chris Paul will be on Steph Curry for most of this game, so Thompson should draw the below average defense of James Harden.

Jaylen Brown (BOS) : 3,700 at CLE
Brown only played 17.8 minutes per game and was not a high FanDuel point per minute player last season for the Celtics. However, with the departure of Avery Bradley, Brown will likely see his minutes increase and could settle in around 25 minutes per game. If that is the case right out of the gate then Brown will be an excellent source of value at the shooting guard position on this small slate tonight.

Small Forward

Kevin Durant (GSW) : $9,800 vs. HOU
We’re going to want to spend up at small forward tonight at least one spot and I’m choosing Durant over LeBron. Durant averaged nearly 50 FanDuel points per game last season and there is no reason to believe he will not put up numbers again this season. This matchup with the Rockets should be played at a very quick pace and there should be plenty of scoring.

Gordon Hayward (BOS) : $7,600 at CLE
Hayward decided to head east and team up with his college coach Brad Stevens. I expect Hayward to take a slight step backward in scoring since Kyrie will be their primary scorer, but I do believe Hayward’s assist numbers should increase. This offense probably will not play at an incredibly quick pace, but it should operate much quicker than the Jazz, who played at one of the slowest paces in the league over the past few seasons.

Power Forward

Kevin Love (CLE): $7,000 vs. BOS
Love will remain in the starting lineup and slide over to center which I believe will be a boost for him. He should see his rebounding numbers increase in this role and with Irving gone he should also see a slight increase in his usage percentage as well.

Jae Crowder (CLE): $4,500 vs. BOS
Crowder was a nice secondary piece that the Cavs received in the Kyrie/Thomas trade. Crowder is not a high usage player, but he is a plus defender who is capable of stuffing the stat sheet with a few steals on any given night. I’m not quite sure if he will see over 30 minutes per game like he did in Boston, but as long as it doesn’t drop to below 25 minutes per game he should be able to pay off his salary at this price.

Center

Clint Capela (HOU): $6,000 at GS
Capela is a player who improved tremendously from the 2015-2016 season to last year and he was rewarded by starting 25 more games. Capela is another player who can stuff the stat sheet on defense, specifically in the block column. Also, the addition of Chris Paul should only increase the efficiency of this offense, which should lead to a slight increase in points for Capela as well.
