Week 6 Defenses to Stream (Fantasy Football)

Week 6 appears to be the week of the blowout. It projects four games carrying a spread of double-digit points, and another just a half-point short (and I suspect that will be bet to a double-digit spread). Two of the double-digit favorites have low-owned defenses that make an appearance in this week’s streaming suggestions. All four of this week’s touted streaming options on defense are owned on under 50% of ESPN and Yahoo! rosters.

The Titans are my least favorite group suggested in this piece, and if Marcus Mariota appears likely to miss this week’s contest, I’d pass on them entirely if possible. A healthy Mariota would open the door to a big lead for the Titans — something that’s damn near impossible to accomplish with Matt Cassel or Brandon Weeden leading Tennessee’s offense — and put the Colts in predictable passing situations. With Andrew Luck already ruled out for this week, Indianapolis will continue to trot out a below-average offense that’s 22nd in points per game (19.4), is averaging the fifth fewest yards per play (4.8), tied for the seventh most turnovers (eight), and tied for the fourth most sacks allowed (18). Everything about this matchup is favorable for the Titans defense, and that’s the only reason to consider them despite their poor showing through five games.

Even without some key starters on defense on a short week, the Buccaneers held the NFL’s leading offense entering Week 5 to 19 points and sacked Tom Brady three times while forcing a pair of turnovers in the Week 5 Thursday Night Football game. As a result of playing early last week, they had a few extra days to prepare for their road tilt against the Cardinals. That’s a bonus reason for streaming the Bucs this week. They’re small favorites on the road, and Arizona’s offense doesn’t offer the same challenge the Patriots did. The Cardinals are tied for the second most sacks allowed (19), tied for the 11th most turnovers (seven), tied for the sixth fewest yards per play (4.9), and they’re 29th in scoring per game (16.2). Arizona’s offense lacks any semblance of a running game without David Johnson ranking dead last in rushing yards per game (51.8). Not only are they in dead last, but they’re a full 23 yards behind the team ahead of them! The Cardinals’ ineptitude on the ground plays into the hands of the Bucs getting after Carson Palmer and forcing turnovers.

The Redskins are the first of two teams featured that are favored by 10 points or more. They host the visiting 49ers. The location is huge because of the opponent. The 49ers are stuck in the unenviable position of traveling from the west coast for a 1:00 PM ET start game in Washington. They also have the tough task of facing a team that’s coming off of a bye and had an extra week to prepare for them. San Francisco’s offense lacks high-end talent across the board. Unsurprisingly, the ho-hum talent on offense has resulted in tying for the sixth fewest yards per play (4.9) and tying for 25th in points per game (17.8). They haven’t been especially turnover prone with six in five games, but they’re tied for the ninth most sacks allowed (15) this season. Furthermore, Brian Hoyer’s thrown 30 interceptions in 54 games (36 starts), so there’s turnover upside that’s not reflected in San Francisco’s season total. As the spread suggests, this game is a likely blowout, and that’s a recipe for fantasy point scoring for the defense of the big favorite.

 vs. MIA -11.5/47 12.7%/22% 22.3 (T-18th)  1 (32nd) 12 (T-11th)

Like the Redskins, the Falcons are coming off of a bye week and have had extra time to prepare for the NFL’s worst offense. Those factors alone are reason to love the Falcons this week, but their explosive offense has the potential to stake them to a big lead in their home stadium. There’s a lot more to like, though. Vic Beasley practiced Monday, and that could be an indicator that he’ll play this week. The third-year edge rusher is one of the game’s premier sackers of the quarterback leading the league with 15.5 sacks last season. He recorded a sack in each of his only two games played this year, and he’d single-handedly boost Atlanta’s DST’s scoring upside this week. Spinning back to Miami’s offensive struggles, they’re the only team averaging under four yards per play at 3.9 (the next lowest total is 4.4 yards per play) and rank last in points per game (10.3) by a margin of more than five points below the next lowest scoring offense. Miami has only turned the ball over five times in four games, but Jay Cutler’s riding a three-game streak of throwing a pick, and if this game goes by the oddsmakers’ script, there will be ample turnover upside.
