We are heading into Week 10 and what a crazy couple of weeks it has been! Some big trades have taken place and there have been more injuries to key players, all of which has had direct impacts on your fantasy football rosters. Every week new questions arise as we look for answers and insight on how we should approach the new week. Below I have answered five questions that will give you some clarity as we approach Week 10 of the NFL season. Should we be worried about Kareem Hunt‘s recent production troubles?
This is the perfect case of recency bias. Kareem Hunt has been one of the most consistent producers from the running back position this season. He had over 100 total yards in each of his first seven games. Hunt scored over 20 fantasy points in his first three games and has failed to reach that mark since. This may be why people are questioning his value. Any time a player begins a season the way Hunt has, people expect that production to continue. That type of production just isn’t sustainable. Kareem Hunt has struggled in his past two weeks but it was against the Denver Broncos who rank 5th among defenses in stopping running back’s fantasy production and the Dallas Cowboys who rank 10th. The Kansas City Chiefs have their bye this week, and I fully expect Kareem Hunt to come out on the other side just fine. In fact, Hunt has one of the easiest schedules for running backs the rest of the way so if you can somehow pry him out of another owners hands, I’d do it.
Who is the running back to own in Miami?
Jay Ajayi had 20 targets with the Dolphins through eight games this season. On Sunday night alone, Kenyan Drake and Damien Williams totaled 12 targets in which they split evenly. Both running backs caught all six of their targets. Given the production we saw from both Drake and Williams, I would not anticipate either one to take over as the “lead” back. This offense needed a change and did so by shipping out their star running back to Philadelphia. It’s safe to assume the Dolphins will elect to use both Kenyan Drake and Damien Williams moving forward. As far as which running back is the one to own, I think it’s Drake. As much as Williams was involved in the passing game, Kenyan Drake earned the same amount of targets. Williams just happened to be on the field when he caught a touchdown pass. Drake outshined Williams in the run game with 69 yards on just nine attempts. Williams averaged just two yards a carry with 14 yards on seven attempts. Both should be solid flex options on your fantasy teams but their ceilings are capped given the workload will likely be split for the rest of the season.
Is Adrian Peterson‘s production sustainable?
I believe it is and here’s why. If he continues to get the type of volume he saw last week, Adrian Peterson has shown he still has plenty of gas left in the tank. With Drew Stanton as the Cardinals option at quarterback, they will want to run the ball as often as they can. It proved successful in their win last week, albeit, against a terrible 49ers team, but he has proven he can produce when fed the ball more than 20 times a game. This past week, Bruce Arians and the Arizona Cardinals decided to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson a CAREER high 37 times. He converted those carries into 159 rushing yards on 4.3 yards per carry. Although I don’t expect Peterson to get that kind of volume every game, I do expect him to get 20 carries per game at the very least and as I mentioned, Peterson is a production machine when getting that type of volume.
What impact does Kelvin Benjamin have on the Buffalo Bills offense?
At six-foot-five, 240 pounds, Kelvin Benjamin provides a huge target for Tyrod Taylor. Tyrod doesn’t target WRs as much as the typical QB, but he has never had a wide receiver like Benjamin. Tight end, Charles Clay is expected to return this week and now with the addition of Kelvin Benjamin, could open the door for more open field opportunities for Taylor’s favorite target. Benjamin will stretch the field, opening up the run game for LeSean McCoy. Zay Jones also benefits from this trade as he should see easier defensive matchups given the threat of Jordan Matthews playing in the slot and Benjamin likely demanding double coverage. Deonte Thompson will have fewer opportunities but is just another weapon that could see plenty of space in the open field for Taylor to target. It’s clear Kelvin Benjamin has the potential to dramatically improve the Bills offense all around. At the end of the day, I believe that Kelvin Benjamin will get his opportunities, but I think this is a slight upgrade to everyone else on the Bills offense more than it is for Benjamin himself.
Is Jared Goff an every-week starter?
Through Week 9 (eight games), Jared Goff is a QB1. He is top 10 in passing yards, has 13 passing touchdowns and just four interceptions. He has done a great job protecting the football this season. Goff hasn’t had to throw the ball too much as he has the support of the best fantasy running back in the league in Todd Gurley. Gurley has proven to be a great option for Goff to target as Gurley has 41 targets on the season (12th best among running backs). Another benefit of a guy like Gurley is that he sets up a lot of red zone opportunities for his quarterback. Goff has the 6th most red zone attempts for quarterbacks this season with 41 and the number one red zone target, Cooper Kupp (15), to help pad his stats. The more red zone opportunities for any player, the better their fantasy numbers will be. Goff hasn’t been the most flashy quarterback, but he has done a great job with playing smart football. Goff has earned his way as a starter in fantasy. You will want to bench him in tougher matchups, however, as he had terrible games against the Seahawks and Jaguars this season. He doesn’t have to do too much to be effective and as long as Todd Gurley continues to be Todd Gurley, Jared Goff will continue to find his wide receivers open, leading to fantasy production.
