FanDuel NHL Lineup Advice: Saturday (1/20)

We have an abundance of options tonight with 18 games on the go. I like Boston, Toronto, and St. Louis to provide multiple options and both Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay have intriguing matchups as well. Two other games to consider are Edmonton vs. Vancouver and Florida vs. Nashville, as they could both as easily have final scores of 2-1 or 7-6.

Center

David Krejci (BOS): $5,900 vs. MON
As much as I wanted to include the unstoppable Evgeni Malkin in this lineup, Krejci’s salary is too enticing to pass up. Players who miss time due to injury often fly under the radar for awhile, but he’s scored 23 points in his appearances this year, including seven in his last six games. Boston has not lost a game in the their last 10 and will bring the seventh-best offense in the NHL to face the eighth-worst defense. He looks like a value play at worst.

Mathew Barzal (NYI): $6,300 vs. CHI
GM Garth Snow seems to do just enough each year to hold onto his job, and drafting Barzal has been a revelation for this team. With 47 points in 48 games he is a consensus top-three pick for Rookie of the Year (in a year with a tremendous rookie crop). Anyone who’s seen him play can only marvel at the sheer speed and agility he has with the puck on his stick, and whenever you can pay $6,300 for an $8,900 player you slot him in and use your savings elsewhere.

Wing

Thomas Vanek (VAN): $5,300 vs. EDM
I admit this was a tossup pick (sorry Mitch Marner), but Vanek has had a decent season this year (32 points in 45 games), and he is slotted to play on the Canuck’s top line. Edmonton is 27th in defense, 3-6-1 in their last 10 games, and his average ice time of 14:10 will probably be higher with the injuries to Bo Horvat and Daniel Sedin.

Tyler Johnson (TB): $6,200 vs. MIN
With four goals in his last five games, Johnson seems to be enjoying life again on Tampa Bay’s excellent second line with Brayden Point and Andrej Palat. He currently ranks fifth in ice time among forwards and fourth in points on a potent Lightning offense. Minnesota is 19th in defense, and this game could easily turn into a shootout.

Anders Lee (NYI): $6,800 vs. CHI
Lee plays on the No. 1 line with John Tavares and Josh Bailey, so I’m hedging my bet that one of these lines is solid and the other one (with Barzal) dominant tonight. With 26 goals already, he’s tied for the third spot in the league and has been quite consistent throughout the year. Chicago is 25th in defense and has not recovered from the long-term absence of their top goalie, Corey Crawford.

Brock Boeser (VAN): $6,500 vs. EDM
While I flipped a coin on Thomas Vanek, this choice was easy to make. Along with Barzal, Boeser is right up there for Rookie of the Year consideration. With 40 points in 42 games (including 22 goals), he has an excellent chance to light up the Oilers.

Defense

Mikhail Sergachev (TB): $4,500 vs. MIN
Sergachev has been one of my go-to choices this season and rarely disappoints. While he has hit a bit of a rookie wall of late, his role has expanded somewhat with the injury to all-world Victor Hedman. I like the stack with Tyler Johnson in this game and the low total cost of $10,700. He’s on the first power-play unit with the likes of Stamkos, Kucherov, Point and Palat.

Ryan Ellis (NSH): $4,900 vs. FLA
After several months on IR, Ellis has picked up right where he left off. Coming off a 16-goal season, he has an impressive four points in his first six games this year and is facing a Florida squad with the 23rd best goals against average in the league. He is already on the first power-play unit and averaging over 20 minutes a game.

Goalie

Carter Hutton (STL): $8,700 vs. ARI
You’re often rolling the dice when you bank on a backup goalie, but Hutton has been lights out this year. His stats will back up my last statement (10-3-1 record, 1.72 goals against average, 0.943 save percentage). He’s also playing at home (where the Blues sport a 15-9 record) and is facing the Arizona Coyotes (2-4-4 in their last 10 games, and 5-14-6 on the road). As always, make sure your goalie is a confirmed starter before entering your lineup.
