FanDuel NHL Value Plays: Tuesday (1/16)

This Tuesday evening brings us a six-game NHL slate. The San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, and Dallas Stars are the only teams playing on the back end of a back-to-back. There are a few high-priced players to pay up for tonight, but there is a lot of value opening up due to injuries. Let’s take a look at some of the better value plays on tonight’s slate.

Center

Chris Tierney (SJ): $3,800 @ ARI
These two teams played in San Jose last Saturday night. The result was a high-scoring, 6-5 overtime victory for the Sharks. The Coyotes, not to much surprise, have still been unable to turnaround their disaster of a season. Although much better at home, the third line for the Sharks should thrive as they are the hottest on the team at the moment. Chris Tierney scored two points in yesterday’s win to go along with seven in his last six games. At $3,800, it is important to jump on these low-priced players before their price increases. In a plus matchup, this only entices the play.

Wing

Joonas Donskoi (SJ): $3,900 @ ARI
This is the second piece to a low-priced, high-upside team stack. Joonas Donskoi had a huge night on Saturday against this same Arizona team scoring two goals and adding an assist. Although 40 FanDuel points are not likely repeatable, the price and matchup are too good to pass up. Donskoi, along with Tierney, will play together on the third forward line and the second power-play unit. With Coyotes top defensive center Derick Stepan having his hands full with Joe Thornton, it is predicted that Donskoi and company will see a lot of Christian Dvorak. Recording a 35 GF% should give Donskoi and Tierney a lot of opportunities to score.

Marcus Johansson (NJ): $3,800 @ NYI
In a huge divisional game, the New Jersey Devils find themselves in “must-win” territory after going winless in their last six. Marcus Johansson is a big piece of secondary scoring who needs to get going for the Devils to have success. Against one of the weakest defensive teams, he should find his scoring touch. The Islanders are dealing with a lot of key injuries and will be playing their second game in as many nights. After two much needed days off, expect the Devils to come out firing on a battered Islanders team.

Defense

Sami Vatanen (NJ): $4,800 @ NYI
On a shorter slate of games, a lot of the New Jersey Devils will be in play. Sami Vatanen plays top pairing defensive minutes and power-play time. A lot of people focus on how many goals the Islanders have scored (ranked first overall in 5v5), but neglect to notice the goals allowed against (ranked 29th in 5v5). Now with six key injuries to the starting lineup, New York will need to lean heavily on their call-ups. Again, on the back end of a back-to-back, New York will most likely look sluggish and sloppy in a very important divisional game.

Goalie

Antti Raanta (ARI): $7,200 vs. SJ
Tonight is not a night to get cute and pick a low-priced goalie. Paying up is the best option. If, however, you are looking to take down a huge GPP or win a qualifier, Antti Raanta might be a solid option. Although the win is not even close to a guarantee, Raanta does have good overall numbers, and the Coyotes will face the Sharks in their second game in as many nights. After an emotional overtime loss Saturday night in San Jose, there is a chance Arizona is fired up to play the Sharks again. He is the only goalie worth a look under $8,000.
