FanDuel PGA Recommended Plays: Honda Classic

FanDuel PGA Recommended Plays: Honda Classic

The PGA Tour has departed from California and heads to the Florida swing, as we start this week with the Honda Classic at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens. PGA National is a tough course – a par 70 with only two par 5s and water on most holes. Fairways are also tough to hit here, and golfers are easily punished with over-seeded rye rough right off the fairway on both sides and plenty of water too just past the rough. Wind is also in the forecast, so we’ll have to be careful in picking our golfers this week. You want good ball strikers here, as strong long iron players and golfers who pound fairways are your best bets. Lets dive into the picks:

Lock of the Week

Rickie Fowler ($12,300)
Following a similar theme to last week, the top golfer is the lock of the week. This pick is simple. Not only is Fowler the defending champion, but the other high-priced options aren’t good fits for PGA National this week. Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy are bombers who love using the driver, and they simply won’t have that option this week. Fowler is one of my favorite golfers to target in general because of his high birdie making ability and great putter – he rarely misses cuts and always gets his 20 or so birdies. On a course where you have to club down, hit greens, and tactfully maneuver through the golf course, I’m locking in Rickie and his calm demeanor this week for the Honda.

Value of the Week

Scott Stallings ($8,700)
Stallings is on quite the heater right now, with Top 10 finishes at both Pebble Beach and Riviera last week. He also comes into the Honda with solid course history, good enough for a pair of Top 30s in four tries here. He’s not that flashy of a pick, but his price is simply too low, as he’s surrounded by guys like Jim Furyk, Ben Martin, and Will McGirt, all who are either not good golfers or struggle here significantly. With Fowler up top, we need value, and Stallings fits the mold as a golfer with solid course history and top-notch form coming in at a very fair price.

Momentum Play of the Week

Sam Saunders ($8,400)
This is another pick that isn’t all that flashy, but I like Arnold Palmer’s grandson a lot this week. Saunders is that combination of current form and course history that we love to see in PGA DFS, as he comes in with four straight Top 26s and has two Top 20 finishes in two tries here. Saunders is solid off the tee, aggressive with his irons, and an overall solid player who has always had potential and may very well be putting it together right now. He’s another good value that you can pair easily with Rickie Fowler in your lineups.

Contrarian Play of the Week

Luke Donald ($8,500)
The former No. 1 player in the world is borderline washed at this point in his career, but Donald has a few spots on tour in which he thrives. To put it simply, this is one of them. He’s 10/10 in cuts made here with a few Top 10s at PGA National, so the history is strong. He also played well last week at a course that doesn’t fit his game at all, finishing 37th at Riviera with a strong Sunday to cap it off. For Donald, I always look back to last year at the RBC Heritage. He was cheap, had poor form coming in, but amazing course history, and I played 100% of him at low ownership and he finished Top 5. Hopefully, he follows suit this week in Florida.

Fade of the Week

Tiger Woods ($9,100)
Here we go again. Tiger was my fade last week and it worked out, as he missed the cut and constantly struggled to keep the ball in play. At a course this week where fairways hit are imperative, Tiger will likely struggle, as he has shown little to no control off the tee in his two starts back. FanDuel has priced him down significantly, making him an enticing play this week. But don’t be fooled. Tiger is not a good play this week, as it’s better to take a wait and see approach with him as he makes his way back.

Side Note: Many European Tour stars are coming over this week, with some being Dylan Frittelli, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, and Louis Oosthuizen. In my opinion, despite some of their form being great overseas, it’s better to take a wait-and-see approach with them in the US, as it can be hard to succeed in first starts on the PGA Tour this year.

Don’t Forget About These Guys

Jason Dufner ($10,300)
Tyrrell Hatton ($10,600)
Graeme McDowell ($9,100)
