Bobby Sylvester’s Outfield Rankings

Bobby Sylvester’s Outfield Rankings

The strategy for selecting your outfielders this year is different than I have ever seen before. There are a handful of values to target within the top 100 overall players, but once you get outside of those options, I’d advise you to wait another 70+ picks to fill out the rest of your outfield spots. At that point, you’ll discover another 10 players who, oddly, are not late-draft fliers, but safe bets to outperform players going 50 spots above them. For instance, Carlos Gonzalez, who was a top 30 overall pick this time last year, was excellent in the second half after struggling through an injury in the first half. He is back in Coors Field and likely to hit about .300 with sufficient pop. Likewise, Delino DeShields is going around pick 180 and while he doesn’t quite have 60 SB speed like Billy Hamilton, he will right up there among the tops in the league while not hurting you anywhere near as much in batting average. Some of my other favorites late into drafts are Michael Conforto, Bradley Zimmer, Randal Grichuk and Mallex Smith. If you are in a deeper league, take a shot on Jorge Soler, who has been spectacular this spring, Nick Williams and/or David Dahl. I’ve been adding all of them in plenty of leagues as I see them being some of the biggest breakout hitters this season.

All of the players above are merely backup options, however. I would much rather have a trio of my targets from within the top 100 picks. The most important of these to me is Tommy Pham. He is going 60 picks into the draft, but performed as a top 20 hitter last season in just 3/4 of the season. If he can stay healthy all year, he might just return first round value. I’m also making it a priority to draft J.D. Martinez, even if I have to pull the trigger in the top 15 picks. He hit more HR per at-bat last season than even Giancarlo Stanton and has hit .300 or better now in three of his past four years. If he can stay on the field, we are looking at an American League MVP candidate. Rounding out my favorite targets are Matt Olson, Domingo Santana and Joey Gallo who could all hit 40+ homers this season. Now, let’s take a look at my top 150 outfielders with notes for 100 of them.
