DraftKings PGA Value Plays: Valspar Championship

The players will be tested this week at the Valspar Championship. The Copperhead course at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida is the monster the players must tame this week. The 7,340 yard Par 71 is extremely tight for how long the terrain plays. Adam Hadwin was a bit of a surprise winner last year, which means anything can happen this week. Recipes for success this week: Taking advantage of the par 5s and converting up and downs when greens are missed. Let’s see if these three players will be to handle Copperhead and it’s iconic last three holes labeled The Snake Pit.

Zach Johnson $7,700
After taking some time off, Johnson will be returning to action this week. The 42-year-old veteran has not played since the Waste Management Phoenix Open in early February. However, Johnson has a top 15 and a top 20 in only three tournaments played in 2018. At the price Johnson is at right now, he is almost a steal.

This course sets up relatively well for Johnson. He keeps it in play and has been dialed in with his approach shots this year. Johnson is 13th on tour in strokes gained: approach-to-the-green, which will help him control the beast that Copperhead is. Some players might lose some momentum on the tough par 3s this week. Johnson might not be one of those players, as he has the sixth-best scoring average on par 3s this season. Look for Johnson to have a solid week.

Chesson Hadley $7,400
Chesson Hadley had a great finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, finishing fifth, but has not done much since then. Nonetheless, Hadley can have some real success at Copperhead this week. The Georgia Tech product has the ability to go very low, as he has had weeks with ridiculous amounts of birdies.

As I mentioned with Johnson, there are a lot of tough par 3s on this course. Hadley has been great on par 3s this year with a 2.97 scoring average. If players can stay around level par on the par 3s this week they will definitely be getting a jump on the rest of the field.

Brian Gay $7,000
The super sleeper pick of the week is Brian Gay. The Fort Worth, Texas native already has two top 10s in 2018. Not to mention, Gay already has a fourth- and ninth-place finish at the Valspar Championship. Now, these finishes were back in 2006 and 2007, but it does not mean that Gay will not have some confidence coming into this week.

Other than his great track record, Gay also has a remarkable short game. The ability to make up and downs at Copperhead is essential, and Gay has been reliant on his short game his whole career. Do not be surprised if the 46-year-old veteran creeps up the leaderboard this week.
