FanDuel MLB Value Plays: Saturday (3/31)

FantasyBeast15 breaks down value plays for Saturday’s slate of FanDuel MLB contests.

Here’s a look at the top value plays for Saturday on FanDuel. I will do my best to keep the top plays as cheap as possible, but will include higher priced players if their projections far exceed their salary-based expectation.

Pitcher – Ian Kennedy (KC) vs. CHW ($6,000)
Kennedy will face the White Sox in Kauffman Stadium. If you’re looking to save to fit some of the top bats into your lineup, Kennedy gives you salary relief, but also gives you some upside.

The White Sox have a weak lineup with only one batter (Jose Abreu) with a projected wOBA inside the top 50 hitters in baseball. There are tons of strikeouts in the White Sox batting order, leading to upside if Kennedy can keep the ball in the park. Cool weather in Kansas City should help run prevention as well.

Catcher/First Base – Russell Martin (TOR) vs. NYY ($2,100)
Martin is priced at $100 above the minimum and will face C.C. Sabathia in the Rogers Centre. This is a great hitting environment early in the year when many of the other games are outdoors in colder weather. Martin will have the platoon advantage and should hit in the top five of the order against the lefty.

Second Base – Devon Travis (TOR) vs. NYY ($2,500)
For many of the same reasons Martin is a quality play, Travis is also a substantial value. He’ll also face Sabathia in the Rogers Centre, but will likely hit from the leadoff spot. Only three second baseman are projected to score more FanDuel points than Travis, but each will cost at least $800 more.

Third Base – Luis Valbuena (LAA) vs. OAK ($2,300)
Valbuena bats lower in the order than I would like, but for $2,300, he still has value. It’s unclear which Daniel (Gossett or Mengden) he’ll face at the moment, but both are mediocre right-handed pitchers. Both pitchers are projected to give up around 1.3-1.4 HR/9, so there’s a solid shot at a home run from Valbuena. With the platoon advantage and a bit of pop, you could do worse than Valbuena at a depressed price.

Shortstop – Brandon Crawford (SF) vs. LAD ($2,100)
Crawford should bat in the top six in the order and will face Kenta Maeda in Dodger Stadium. While neither the opposing pitcher or the ballpark scream value, Crawford is a much better hitter than his price tag suggests.

Crawford will also hold the platoon advantage against Maeda who struggled with preventing home runs last season. Maeda sees his strikeout rate almost cut in half when facing a lefty and gives up a much higher wOBA to lefties as well. For a small step up from the minimum, Crawford provides value at a shallow position.

Outfield – Odubel Herrera (PHI) vs. ATL ($2,100)
Herrera is the best value on the entire slate, but the only reason he isn’t a lock is because FanDuel has so many underpriced outfielders. Herrera will face Brandon McCarthy in SunTrust Park and should bat third which gives him plenty of chances to score and drive in runs.

He’ll bat with the platoon advantage and should be able to put the ball in play against McCarthy. If he does, he has an outside chance of a stolen base as well.
