DRAFT MLB Lineup Advice: Wednesday (4/25)

DRAFT MLB Lineup Advice: Wednesday (4/25)

DRAFT only provides two options for the Wednesday schedule: 15-game (2:10pm) and 11-game (6:35pm) slates. To accommodate both the styles of play, I’ll include all players in my rankings player pool for this post.

Four games have an over/under of at least 9.5 total runs and two teams are favored by at least -200 (LAD, HOU, and PIT).

This article is posted well before lineups are released by the managers. If you have a question, feel free to reach me on Twitter @CharlieSideHstl.

You don’t commonly see the odds as strong as Kershaw, and the Dodgers, have on Wednesday (-380). So, congrats Kershaw, you propel to the top of the leaderboard. Now, let’s examine how Vegas got to that number. First, Kershaw’s at home. Over the past three seasons, he’s 28-6 with a 1.81 ERA and 362 strikeouts in 284 innings at Dodger Stadium. Next, the Marlins are 28th in runs scored this season (70 runs in 22 games). Also, when they make contact, it doesn’t go far. The Marlins are 26th in team ISO against left-handed pitchers this season (.110). I know I’ve spent too much time telling you to draft the best pitcher in the game, but I didn’t want you to have any doubt going into your contest on Wednesday.

We have Kershaw and Scherzer on the docket, but the showdown of the night won’t include either of them. Arrieta, and the Phillies, host Greinke, and the Diamondbacks. Vegas has pegged this game with a slate-low seven total runs and they gave a slight nod to Philadelphia (-113). In his last outing, Arrieta fanned 10 batters in seven innings and allowed only one hit (vs. PIT). Greinke’s had a couple rough starts on the road, but the Phillies have struck out the seventh-most times this season (211). If I had to choose between the two, I’d go with Arrieta and hope his sinker is working as well as it was in his last performance.

Infielders

1. Freddie Freeman, ATL (@ CIN)

2. Nolan Arenado, COL (vs. SD)

3. Didi Gregorius, NYY (vs. MIN)

4. Giancarlo Stanton, NYY (vs. MIN)

5. Jose Ramirez, CLE (vs. CHC)

6. Eric Thames, MIL (@ KC)

7. Jose Martinez, STL (vs. NYM)

8. Joey Votto, CIN (vs. ATL)

9. J.D. Martinez, BOS (@ TOR)

10. Nelson Cruz, SEA (@ CWS)

11. Carlos Correa, HOU (vs. LAA)

12. Robinson Cano, SEA (@ CWS)

13. DJ LeMahieu, COL (vs. SD)

14. Trevor Story, COL (vs. SD)

15. Trea Turner, WSH (@ SF)

16. Christian Villanueva, SD (@ COL)

17. Jed Lowrie, OAK (@ TEX)

18. Matt Olson, OAK (@ TEX)

19. Joey Gallo, TEX (vs. OAK)

20. Paul DeJong, STL (vs. NYM)

When I have to debate between Stanton and Gregorius, either Stanton is slumping or Gregorius is scorching hot. In this case, it’s both. The shortstop for the Yankees has homered in three consecutive games. He’s batting an insane .563 ISO at home against right-handed pitching this season. Gregorius is averaging 20 DRAFT fantasy points over the past three games. He’s earned the right to be selected over Stanton, for now.

For those of you who enjoy a good batter vs. pitcher matchup, I have one for your Wednesday readings. Cano is 38-for-92 (.413) with 17 extra-base hits, including six home runs, against James Shields. To condense the matchup even more, Cano is 6-for-11 (.545) with two home runs since 2014. Shields also leads the slate with a 1.8 HR/9 ratio since 2017.

Outfielders

1. Aaron Judge, NYY (vs. MIN)

2. Charlie Blackmon, COL (vs. SD)

3. Mookie Betts, BOS (@ TOR)

4. Tommy Pham, STL (vs. NYM)

5. Mike Trout, LAA (@ HOU)

6. Wil Myers, SD (@ COL)

7. Bryce Harper, WSH (@ SF)

8. Khris Davis, OAK (@ TEX)

9. Christian Yelich, MIL (@ KC)

10. Ryan Braun, MIL (@ KC)

11. Michael Conforto, NYM (@ STL)

12. Lorenzo Cain, MIL (@ KC)

13. Matt Joyce, OAK (@ TEX)

14. Dexter Fowler, STL (vs. NYM)

15. George Springer, HOU (vs. LAA)

16. Manny Margot, SD (@ COL)

17. Dee Gordon, SEA (@ CWS)

18. David Dahl, COL (vs. SD)

19. Rhys Hoskins, PHI (vs. ARI)

20. Mitch Haniger, SEA (@ CWS)

After dealing with a groin injury, Pham returned to the Cardinals lineup on Tuesday and made an immediate impact, homering in his first AB. This season, Pham is 7-for-14 (.500) with one home run against southpaws, and he’ll face another lefty on Wednesday. In their extremely brief meetings, Pham is 4-for-4 against Steven Matz, with one home run.

While he just barely made the list, there’s another guy who’s slowly creeping up the ranks, Haniger. In the past week, he’s 12-for-30 (.400) with four home runs and one stolen base. It’s not just four homers in a week. It was a home run in four straight games. I already mentioned Shields has a knack for allowing homers. Don’t be surprised if Haniger adds to Shields’ total.
