DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (4/23)

Monday Night’s featured slate on DraftKings has a few solid pitching options to choose from along with the Padres going back to Colorado. It’s hard not to like heavy favorites like Gerrit Cole (-180) or Carlos Carrasco (-185) at the top, and Masahiro Tanaka (-199) on the cheap. We’ll need to carve out some cap space to fit the top arms and Coors bats so I’ll highlight some value plays to get the edge we need for your lineup construction. Let’s go!

Pitcher

Walker Buehler (LAD): $6,200 vs. MIA
The Dodgers top pitching prospect makes his first big league start in a home contest against the Marlins. He’ll get an easy matchup in an excellent pitching environment, it’s fairly common for big league clubs to not be able to pick up on the stuff of a top pitching prospect early. Later into the season is when clubs start to figure out young pitchers. So far in the 2018 season, he’s posted a 2.08 ERA and a 4:1 K:B, so he’s legit. It’s a simple spot-start, so he’s likely going to give it all he’s got. I think he’s firmly in play across all formats and he will likely gain some steam throughout the day and become a popular play. If so, be on watch for news of a pitch count as that would make me consider a pivot to the man below…

Catcher

Austin Hedges (SD): $3,200 @ COL
As far as catchers go, both Coors guys are kind of pricey. Hedges already homered of Chad Bettis earlier this season at Coors and will cost $300 less than Chris Iannetta in the other dugout. I like both catchers in this game though, so it’s really about who you can afford. Bryan Mitchell has been giving up a ton of hard contact, making Iannetta a good play. If you need another $300, I wouldn’t hate going down to Yan Gomes (below) as he’s exhibited the best batted ball data of the group, hitting the ball really hard, but just not having the most plate discipline.

Other Notables

First Base

Ryan McMahon (COL): $2,700 vs. SD (also 3B eligible)
McMahon is finally getting some run in Colorado and his price is cheap due to the lack of prior playing time. He’s had a slow start but is almost too cheap to ignore since he’s hitting at home. I already mentioned Bryan Mitchell having issues giving up hard hit balls and that should play into McMahon’s skill set. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rookie smashes his first dinger of the season against the righty tonight. He’s in play in all formats.

Other Notables

  • Joey Gallo (TEX): $3,800 vs. OAK (also OF eligible)

Second Base

Jason Kipnis (CLE): $3,800 @ BAL
If you can afford it, or if you’re doing a Tribe stack, I think it’s worth paying for Kipnis. He’s riding an eight-game hit streak and coming around now after a slow start that surprised a lot of people coming off a hot spring. Kipnis is a good bet to outproduce the other sub-$4,000 options on the slate as there just isn’t a lot better than him to pick from unless you also like my favorite sneaky play on any slate, Statcast darling Chad Pinder.

Other Notables

Third Base

Miguel Andujar (NYY): $2,800 vs. MIN
There are a lot of appealing prospects on the slate and Andujar is another who has supreme talent at a discount. He’s on fire right now and gets RHP Jake Odorizzi who is a career reverse-splits pitcher. It’s time for some righty-on-righty crime. Andujar should be in the lineup with fellow stud prospect Gleyber Torres. These guys are both a prime example of how DraftKings can be slow to adjust prospects prices, even once they are called up.

Other Notables

Shortstop

Marcus Semien (OAK): $3,400 @ TEX
Last year, Asdrubal Cabrera and Mike Moustakas appeared in my articles more than any other players. This year, Semien has an early jump on that distinguished honor due to his price staying in the low-to-mid $3,000s. The A’s are implied to score 5.5 runs today and he’s still been stinging the ball with an elevated hard-hit rate that’s starting to prove that last year’s lack of power was simply a correlation from his wrist injury. He’s good to go now.

Other Notables

Outfield

David Dahl (COL): $2,800 vs. SD
Another top prospect…we’re close to an all-prospects edition of value plays! Dahl is really cheap and has the talent to take advantage of this matchup against Bryan Mitchell, who I’ve already mentioned several times for surrendering above a 50% hard contact rate over his past three starts. Now, here comes Dahl, finally getting a shot to play for the Rockies…and at home to boot. I really like he and McMahon to get motivated to perform well here.

Mitch Haniger (SEA): $3,700 @ CHW
In a hitters park, I really like what Haniger is bringing to the south-side of Chicago today. He’s been putting up some excellent batted ball speeds and distances and from a lot of hard contact and elevated fly ball rate. This is the perfect batted ball data storm for me, and you know I love my recent batted ball data. He draws gas can Miguel Gonzalez tonight, who is someone I don’t think I’ve ever had on any roster in seven years of playing DFS.

Matt Kemp (LAD): $3,700 vs. MIA
Kemp is showing the same exact batted ball data trends as Haniger, and that’s exactly why he’s here. It’s ironic that their price tags match as well. I don’t expect either to garner much ownership, even in a slightly condensed slate. You could make a case for Haniger > Kemp due to park factor, but they’re both solid plays, and there’s a good chance I’ll play one or the other in most of my lineups. I’d give a slight edge to Haniger as well based on matchup and bullpen. Marco Gonzalez is simply not good, whereas Jarlin Garcia (MIA) still carried some young promise and capable of a better game.
