DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Tuesday (4/17)

DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Tuesday (4/17)

In honor of Tax Day, here’s my favorite accountant joke:

If an accountant’s wife cannot sleep, what does she say?”

Darling, tell me about your work.

Okay, back to fantasy baseball. The postponed games last weekend and Monday made for some interesting slates. Doubleheaders scheduled as a result of these postponed games typically result in unpredictable lineups, but luckily for DFS players, the only doubleheader scheduled (Blue Jays/Royals) is not on the main slate. We have a fun 12-game slate on tap, and while the weather will still be iffy in several stadiums, games are figured to be postponed well in advance, making it easier to set a lineup before the first pitch. As always, be sure to pay close attention to the lineups when they are released and monitor the weather leading up to game time. For reference throughout the season, be sure to bookmark our overview of MLB Park Factors and how to Use Weather to Your Advantage in MLB DFS. Also, check out our GPP and Cash Games Primers to learn more about different daily fantasy game types specific to MLB. Without further ado, let’s get to it!

Pitcher

Patrick Corbin (ARI): $9,800 vs. SF
Much has been written about Corbin (see here for starters). Corbin’s slider is absolutely filthy – just check this out from Pitcher List:

While everyone will be ponying up for Corey Kluber in cash games, it makes perfect sense to go with Corbin, in the humidor, against a struggling San Francisco Giants team. The Diamondbacks are facing Johnny Cueto, who is fresh off the disabled list, making this a favorable matchup. Hunter Pence and Buster Posey (day-to-day with a sore thumb) have hit Corbin well (.429 in 35 at-bats and .302 in 43 at-bats, respectively), but the rest of the Giants’ lineup has either not seen him enough, or has done poorly against him. In 2018, the Giants are hitting a paltry .231 against lefties, and equally bad is their .294 OBP. Roll with Corbin, if for nothing else, just to watch that slider in action. He still might be owned more than you would like in GPPs, so check out the section below for some other options.

Other Notables

Nick Pivetta (PHI) – $8,400 @ ATL
Mike Foltynewicz (ATL) – $,7200 vs. PHI
Alex Wood (LAD) – $8,200 @ SD

Catcher

Francisco Cervelli (PIT): $3,400 vs. COL
While Cervelli does not have a strong track record against Chad Bettis, he is going to be hitting against Chad Bettis. Yes, the Chad Bettis with the career 4.89 ERA and 6.65 K/9. His .283 average is supported by his .297 BABIP, and while his ISO of .239 is unsustainable, it goes to show that Cervelli has roared out of the gates.

Other Notables

Robinson Chirinos (TEX) – $3,200 @ TB
Jonathan Lucroy (OAK) – $3,000 vs. CWS

First Base

Joe Mauer (MIN): $3,000 vs. CLE
There has been a lot of discussion if Mauer is Hall of Fame worthy (you can read about it here). Mauer has posted close to HOF-like numbers against Corey Kluber, going 16-for-49 against him, good for a .992 OPS. Mauer likely will not help you in the power department, but he is sure to get on base once or twice and score a run. Mauer is hitting .412 this year with an absurd 210 wRC+, which of course is unsustainable, but sample sizes at the beginning of the season are fun. If you do not start Kluber, you can double-down with Mauer.

Other Notables

Albert Pujols (LAA) – $3,700 vs. BOS
David Freese (PIT) – $3,000 vs. COL – also can slot at 3B
Marwin Gonzalez (HOU) – $3,000 @ SEA
Matt Olson (OAK) – $4,000 vs. CWS

Middle Infield

Addison Russell (CHC): $3,300 vs. STL
Freddy Galvis (SDP): $3,300 vs. LAD
Second base does not have a lot of value plays on Tuesday, so I’ll give you two potential shortstops to use.

Russell has not had a good start to the year, but I expect the Cubs 8th inning rally Saturday against the Braves to supercharge the team and get the bats going. Chicago will be in the high 30s to start the game, but there is no threat of rain. Russell is 6-for-15 lifetime against probable starter Adam Wainwright, who had a nice start in his last go-around but is showing signs of extreme decline. Even with that good outing, Wainwright still has a 5.06 ERA and a miserable 5.91 K/9.

Galvis crushes Alex Wood, going 7-for-16 against him. Wood’s velocity struggles in 2018 are well-documented, and the Dodgers as a whole are not playing well. Galvis is looking at a great 148 wRC+, and he may even have some RBI opportunities if he bats behind the red-hot Jose Pirela.

My second base recommendation is to go Robinson Cano, who is the cream of the crop on Tuesday, but for a good reason. He absolutely punishes Lance McCullers, going 8-for-22 lifetime against him. McCullers might rebound, but he has had a rough start to 2018, while Cano has not, hitting .375 with 12 runs scored. Having Nelson Cruz behind him again should produce more run-scoring opportunities.

Other Notables

Wilmer Difo (WAS) – $2,900 @ NYM
Dansby Swanson (ATL) – $3,200 vs. PHI

Third Base

Anthony Rendon (WAS): $4,000 @ NYM
Rendon has had a quiet start to the season but is still hitting .286 with a .355 OBP. What makes him a nice play is that he has sat out a few games with a sore toe, and many DFS players are hesitant to use a player who has not played in a few days or is coming off the DL. Rendon is 7-for-20 lifetime against probable starter Zach Wheeler, and if he plays, will likely bat second in a deep Nationals lineup. Just be sure to check the lineup card prior to the game.

Other Notables

Kyle Seager (SEA) -$3,800 vs. HOU
Adrian Beltre (TEX) -$3,100 @ TB

Outfield

Juan Lagares (NYM): $2,600 vs. WAS
Hitting .385 in 44 at-bats against Gio Gonzalez

Matt Joyce (OAK): $3,100 vs. CWS
Batting .333 in 27 at-bats against another Gonzalez (Miguel)

Domingo Santana (MIL): $3,000 and Lorenzo Cain $3,800 vs. CIN
Going against a gas can in Sal Romano

Nomar Mazara (TEX): $2,900 @ TB
Super cheap for a guy who hit 20 homers and drove in 100+ in 2017

My lineup looks like this:

P – Corbin
P – Pivetta
C – Cervelli
1B – Matt Olson
2B – Cano
3B – Rendon (will swap out if not starting, insert Mazara in OF for Cespedes)
SS – Russell
OF – Starling Marte
OF – Cain
OF – Yoenis Cespedes

I’m able to play match-ups with good hitters by fading Kluber and going with other high-upside guys, especially in Ks, with Corbin and Pivetta. Now go reinvest your tax refund into DFS!
