DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Tuesday (4/3)

DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Tuesday (4/3)

After a lot of rain and snow delays on Monday, a few games have been rescheduled, which makes for an interesting twist in Tuesday’s value plays. Despite the postponed games, there will be no doubleheaders Tuesday. Games still have a chance to be rained or even snowed out again on Tuesday, but only the Phillies vs. Mets game falls into the main slate. There will be steady rain throughout the day, with storms coming in at night, which means there is a decent likelihood that the game will be postponed.

All right – let’s get to it! There is a nine-game slate, but no shortage of value plays.

Pitcher

Garrett Richards (LAA) – $6,500 vs. CLE
In cash games, you have to go Clayton Kershaw, who gets the humidor in Arizona. However, in tournaments, Garrett Richards looks to be a wise investment.

Garrett Richards is the ace of the Angels – he just has not been able to prove it over the past few years. While often-injured, Richards has great stuff, including a low-90s slider and a mid-90s fastball. You can even read about his increase in 4-seam spin rate here. More importantly, some of the Indians’ main sluggers, Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez, have struggled out of the gate. They will no doubt start hitting, but each player has not done well against Richards historically, albeit in a small sample size. Michael Brantley, one of the few guys who hits Richards well, is still on the DL. While it appeared that he struggled on Opening Day, he had four cleaning innings, and stumbled through the fifth. If Richards can keep it clean for an inning or two more, which he should as he rounds back into regular-season form, he can easily earn a quality start and get eight or more strikeouts. He is also pitching at home in an extreme pitcher’s park.

If you want to go even cheaper, Jack Flaherty ($6,000) is an option, but he is pitching away from home against the Brewers, a notorious hitter’s park. He looks to be a front-line rotation starter someday, but Tuesday does not look to be that day.

Catcher

Jorge Alfaro (PHI) – $2,900 @ NYM
You never know what lineup Gabe Kapler will trot out each day, or even if he will have his relievers warm up, but Jorge Alfaro is a youngster with tremendous potential. Plus, he is facing Matt Harvey, and you truly do not know how Matt Harvey is going to pitch on any given day. To help his case, Alfaro also has reverse-splits, hitting .375 in 2017 against righties. Just keep in mind the game could be postponed.

Fade Chris Iannetta ($3,500), as it looks like he may be priced higher due to his strong track record against Clayton Richard. Problem is… Tyson Ross is likely pitching Tuesday.

Another catcher to look at is Welington Castillo ($3,400), who is off to a hot start this year, smacking two homers on Monday night. He hit .344 against lefties last year and compiled 20 homers in limited playing time. Being at $3,400 does not necessarily qualify as a “value play,” but with such limited options at catcher, he could be a sneaky play.

Other Notables

First Base

Matt Adams (WAS) – $3,200 @ ATL
While neither of these guys are guaranteed to start, they both have favorable matchups. Adams crushes right-handed pitching to the tune of a .295 average with 17 homers last year. In a small track record against Julio Teheran, he is 2-for-5 with a homer. Again, this is a very small sample size, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. Given that he is in a hitter’s park in a deep lineup, if he gets to play, Adams should perform well.

One other guy to target is Justin Smoak ($3,700) against the White Sox. While he costs a little more, he certainly costs less than the Freemans and Goldschmidts of the world, making him a value play in a hitter’s park. He has also been on fire, hitting a grand slam on Sunday and driving in six runs.

Matt Carpenter ($3,500) also costs a little more than Adams but is hitting in Miller Park, an extreme left-handed hitters park. He also has faced Chase Anderson 21 times, drawing seven walks and getting three hits. Carpenter, with his new elevated swing, could easily reach the seats.

Other Notables

Second Base

Yangervis Solarte (TOR) – $2,900 vs. CWS
With Josh Donaldson likely able to play the field as soon as Tuesday, Solarte may not find himself at third for too much longer. However, Solarte is very versatile and could still find himself inserted in the lineup at another position even if Donaldson is back. Solarte also has reverse-splits, hitting .272 with 16 homers in 2017 against righties. Miguel Gonzalez is another exceptionally average pitcher, so Solarte could take him deep. Even if he does not, he will have a good opportunity to drive in runs, hitting behind Donaldson and Justin Smoak. Solarte can also slide in at shortstop on DraftKings.

Other Notables

  • Scott Kingery (PHI) – $2,900 vs. NYM – also third-base eligible

Shortstop

Dansby Swanson (ATL) – $2,900 vs. WAS
Dansby Swanson had a miserable 2017 but has come roaring out of the gates in 2018. He is hitting .313 with two runs and two RBI on the young season, and is going against A.J. Cole – yes, that A.J. Cole with a 4.76 ERA projected by Steamer. He hit in the six spot Monday, and while typically not the best spot for DFS, the Braves should be able to get runners in scoring position for Swanson to drive them in. He did jack 17 doubles against righties last year, so Swanson looks to be an under-the-radar play in a hitter’s park.

Third Base

Jefry Marte (LAA) – $2,800 vs. CLE
If Jedd Gyorko were guaranteed to be healthy, he would be a no-brainer play at $3,200 at Miller Park. However, he left Monday’s game with a strained hamstring and will likely be out a couple of days. With that said, Jefry Marte has been an early-season revelation with the Angels, hitting .429 with a .286 ISO. With Ian Kinsler out, this has forced Zack Cozart to play second, with Luis Valbuena sliding from first to third, which gives an opening to Marte. Conceivably, manager Mike Scioscia could play Shoei Ohtani at DH Tuesday, with Albert Pujols at first, but this seems unlikely. While he is playing at home in a pitcher’s park, he is going against Josh Tomlin, who is projected for a 4.83 ERA in 2018 and had a 4.98 ERA in 2017.

If you have cash to spend, Adrian Beltre only costs $3,400 (typically above the “value” play consideration…but it’s Adrian Beltre). Kendall Graveman has shown promise in his career, but he has been inconsistent thus far in The Show. Beltre could easily hit a homer or two, despite playing in the Coliseum. Beltre is 4-for-16 against Graveman with a homer.

Other Notables

Outfield

Derek Fisher (HOU) – $3,000 vs. BAL
Josh Reddick (HOU) -$3,300 vs. BAL
Shin-Soo Choo (TEX) – $3,100 @ OAK
Manuel Margot (SDP) – $3,100 vs. COL
Tommy Pham (STL) -$3,500 @ MIL

As alluded to above, Mike Wright is not a good pitcher, so stack the Astros where you can. Choo hit 21 bombs against righties last year, and Kendall Graveman has the ability to give up runs in a hurry. Choo has gotten off to a hot start this year, hitting .364 with a .417 OBP. He has been hitting leadoff in front of Joey Gallo, Elvis Andrus, and Beltre, so he can pile up some runs.

Manuel Margot is also a sneaky play at his home park against the Rockies. Kyle Freeland is projected for a 4.89 ERA by Steamer. Margot posted a .285 average against lefties last year and always has the ability to swipe a bag or two. With Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer behind him, he can be expected to score some runs as well.

Tommy Pham is probably above the “value” play, but he is hitting at a hitter’s park in a solid lineup. Further, it’s a night game, so Pham should not have to deal with his eye issues. He makes for a great play at $3,500. He could easily fill up the stat sheet against an overrated Chase Anderson.
