Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Eric Thames, Andrew Miller, Adrian Beltre

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Eric Thames, Andrew Miller, Adrian Beltre

April is just about finished and there are injuries to discuss all over the league heading into fantasy week five.

Eric Thames loves hitting in April, but fantasy owners will likely not see him hit in May or possibly June after he tore the UCL in his left thumb diving for a ground ball on Tuesday. Thames is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks after having surgery to repair the injury. The obvious beneficiary of playing time is Domingo Santana as Ryan Braun will likely play more first base in Thames’ absence. If you have the DL spot in daily leagues, Thames is worth a stash because of his 1.004 OPS against right-handed pitching. He can probably be dropped in shallow weekly leagues.

Andrew Miller had to be removed from his outing on Wednesday after experiencing pain in the back of his leg. Miller had an MRI on Thursday and was diagnosed with a hamstring strain. The Indians are optimistic that the injury could require a minimum stay on the 10-day disabled list. Miller would be eligible to return on May 6.

Adrian Beltre is on the disabled list with a Grade 1 hamstring strain in his left leg. Beltre was one of the best value picks in fantasy this year, but injuries are the reason for the discount. Beltre missed the first 51 games of the season last year with hamstring and calf issues. He is expected to be out more than 10 days and could return in mid-to-late May.

Wil Myers left the game on Saturday with an oblique strain. He will be placed on the DL, and he thinks he could be back in a couple of weeks. Keep an eye on his status as oblique injuries can linger with hitters.

Here are a few more injuries that we are tracking from the previous week of action.

Mookie Betts (OF – BOS)
Betts left the game on Saturday with hamstring tightness in his right leg and was out of the lineup on Sunday. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

Miguel Sano (1B/3B/DH – MIN)
Sano was out of the lineup on Saturday and Sunday because of hamstring tightness. He is day-to-day.

Shohei Ohtani (SP – LAA)
Ohtani was removed from the game on Friday because of a mild ankle sprain. He was out of the lineup on Saturday, but is expected to make his next start on the mound May 1.

Blake Treinen (RP – OAK)
The Athletics’ closer was removed from Tuesday’s game after being hit by a line drive. He has a right shin bruise and is day-to-day. Treinen is not experiencing any pain and should be available to pitch this week.

Julio Teheran (SP – ATL)
Teheran left his start on Friday with trapezius tightness. He is currently scheduled to make his next start on May 2.

Yasiel Puig (OF – LAD)
Puig had to be removed from the game on Saturday after crashing into a wall trying to catch a foul ball. X-rays on his foot were negative, but he is experiencing some hip soreness. He is day-to-day.

Corey Seager (SS – LAD)
Seager missed one game with hip flexor discomfort, but returned to the lineup on Saturday and hit a home run in the doubleheader. Seager should be active in all formats.

Joe Panik (2B – SF)
Panik hit the 10-day DL on Saturday for a sprained left thumb. Giants manager Bruce Bochy told The San Francisco Chronicle that he expected Panik to miss more than the minimum 10 days with the thumb injury.

Mac Williamson (OF – SF)
Williamson was placed on the seven-day DL on Saturday after he failed a concussion test before his scheduled return to the lineup. The placement on the disabled list is retroactive to Wednesday. Williamson could return on Tuesday.

Updating Previous Injuries

Luiz Gohara (SP – ATL) Ankle
Luiz Gohara was activated on Saturday and sent to Triple-A to work on stamina and conditioning issues. Gohara didn’t have a Spring Training because of injuries, so this will serve as his preparation for his first start of the season at the MLB level. He should need two-to-three starts before he’s called up to Atlanta. Gohara is definitely worth stashing in most leagues.

Dan Straily (SP – MIA) Forearm
Straily is set to start on Monday for the Marlins. Straily has been on the DL with mild inflammation in his right forearm.

Anthony Rendon (3B – WSH) Toe
Rendon is due back at any time for the Nationals. He was placed on the 10-day DL on April 22 with a big toe contusion.

Rich Hill (SP – LAD) Finger
Hill threw a bullpen session on April 23 and a sim game on April 24. He has been on the DL with inflammation in his middle finger. Hill was expected to start Monday for the Dodgers, but he developed an infection in his ailing finger and is now expected to miss at least one additional start.

Josh Donaldson (3B – TOR) Shoulder
Donaldson was sent on a minor league rehab assignment this weekend and could be back in early May. He has been dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder.
