Tonight’s picks include a pair of aces and a value arm who struggled in his last game that was, coincidentally, against his opponent tonight. The trio of hurlers is joined by a power-packed collection of hitters. Since 2015 (or since reaching “The Show,” in the case of a few of the hitters), none of the featured hitters have posted an ISO below .200 against the handedness of pitcher they’re facing tonight. As I said, this group of hitters packs a punch.

Max Scherzer (WAS): $14,000 vs. Dodgers
Scherzer is pitching at an unreal level this year. Through nine starts spanning 58.2 innings, he’s tallied a 1.69 ERA that’s essentially supported by his 1.75 FIP, 2.50 xFIP, and 2.12 SIERA, per FanGraphs, as well as his 1.41 DRA, according to Baseball Prospectus. Among qualified pitchers, Scherzer also ranks second in strikeout rate (40.4% K%), tied for first in K-BB% (34.7%), and first in swinging strike percentage (17.6% SwStr%). He draws a middle-of-the-road matchup against the defending National League champs. The Dodgers are tied for 12th in wRC+ (101) against right-handed pitchers and tied for ninth in wRC+ (98) on the road this season. Scherzer and the Nationals are sizable -213 favorites and the Dodgers have a low team over/under total of only three runs, per Pinnacle. Don’t get sticker shock with Scherzer’s massive salary commitment, his upside and the presence of ample value elsewhere makes him an elite and viable option as your SP1.
