FanDuel MLB Value Plays: Friday (5/25)

Happy Friday DFS players. The main slate on FanDuel is stocked full of ace pitchers like Max Scherzer, Corey Kluber, Noah Syndergaard, and Luis Severino. Most owners are going to plug one of these guys in to anchor their lineups, but their is a ton of value to be had if you look for value below the top tier. Seattle lefty James Paxton takes on Minnesota’s Fernando Romero in an interesting value matchup, while guys like Dallas Keuchel, Sean Manaea, and Jon Gray carry intriguing salaries as well. There is one matchup that sticks out above all others for me, but we will get into that in a bit.  It looks like no major weather concerns outside of a bit of rain in Milwaukee tonight, so all should be well as far as cancellations go. Make sure to check lineups like usual in case of last-minute changes or injuries, but without further ado let’s take a look at the value plays you should consider for tonight’s main slate on FanDuel to get an edge on your competition.

Starting Pitcher Value Play of the Day

Fernando Romero (MIN): $6,300 vs. SEA
Most of the money Friday night will be spent on the buffet of aces going. Hidden below for half the price is right-hander Fernando Romero, who has the unfortunate luck of drawing James Paxton as his opponent. The Mariners come into the game in the middle of the pack of the American League vs. right-handed pitchers. However, Seattle will be without superstar Robinson Cano (suspended) and Dee Gordon (fractured toe), while lineup anchors Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager battle through awful 2018 seasons. You could easily argue that Romero has an easier assignment than Paxton tonight. Romero has had a terrific start to his career, posting a 1.66 ERA, 3.62 FIP, and a 9,14 K/9. Walks are certainly an issue for him (4.57 BB/9) but he’s been able to limit the damage by keeping the ball on the ground and in the ballpark. If you are looking to save some serious cash on Friday night, the talented Fernando Romero and his $6,300 salary are an incredible value.

Infield Value Plays

Brock Holt (2B – BOS): $2,400 vs. ATL
Braves right-hander Julio Teheran is not fairing well against left-handed hitters this season. Teheran is carrying a 5.73 FIP while lefties are crushing the ball for a 40.6% hard contact rate. Brock Holt holds a .353 wOBA and a 120 wRC+ this season when facing right-handers and if the Red Sox infielder draws the start tonight, he could make for a sneaky value play for just $2,400.

Yolmer Sanchez (3B – CWS): $2,900 vs. DET
The switch-hitting Yolmer Sanchez is having himself a solid year against right-handed pitching. When hitting from the left side of the plate, Sanchez has a .351 wOBA with a  .310/.341/.481 slash line in 2018. He faces off against Tigers right-hander Mike Fiers. The veteran is off to a rough start, carrying a 5.44 FIP and a career-low 5.82 K/9. Fiers is doing even worse against left-handed hitters, who are destroying him to the tune of a .379 wOBA and a .582 slugging percentage. Yolmer Sanchez makes for a fine value play facing off against Fiers and his 7.16 FIP vs. lefties.

Outfield Value Plays

Juan Soto (OF – WAS): $3,500 vs. MIA
I couldn’t resist. Yes, maybe $3,500 is not a great value is some people’s mind, but Soto is facing off against  Jose Urena Friday night, and the matchup screams “pick me.” The Miami right-hander has a 4.59 FIP vs. left-handed hitters while allowing a 42.3% hard contact rate and .335 wOBA. The matchup is hard to resist with the left-hand hitting Juan Soto, who is fresh off a big league promotion. The young outfielder started the season in Low-A and smashed a path all the way to Washington by May bt collecting over 50 RBI in the minors this season. Over 50! RBI is a terrible stat to hang your hat on in player analysis, but sometimes you have to admire a huge outlier. I consider Soto a great value at $3,500 because I can easily see him being bumped up to over $4,000 by the end of June.

Daniel Palka (OF – CWS): $2,900 vs. DET
For the same reasons as Yolmer Sanchez, outfielder Daniel Palka makes for a great value tonight vs. Tigers right-hander Mike Fiers. The Chicago lefty holds an impressive .288 ISO vs. right-handed opposition in 2018 while maintaining a .335 wOBA and a .545 slugging percentage. Fiers makes for an easy target if you are looking to save some cash, and you do that by tossing Palka into your lineup.

Jorge Soler (OF – KC): $3,300 vs. TEX
Jorge Soler has had a terrific season so far in 2018, batting .280 with a .364 wOBA and 129 wRC+. He has had a bit of a rough stretch recently, but the veteran southpaw Mike Minor may be just what he needs to get back on track. Righties are decimating Minor this season, tuning him up for a .287/.353/.552 slash line to go with a .384 wOBA and a 40.6% hard contact rate. The Rangers right-hander also has not performed very well at home this season, sporting a 4.69 FIP. On the flip side, Soler is absolutely raking against lefties this year, carrying a .348 batting average, .466 wOBA, .326 ISO, and an insane 1.120 OPS. I would call $3,300 a bargain for those numbers.
