FanDuel PGA Recommended Plays: Wells Fargo Championship

FanDuel PGA Recommended Plays: Wells Fargo Championship

After a week off for DFS purposes, the PGA Tour is back in full force as the Well Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club comes around. This is a stacked field this week, with many of the world’s best coming to Quail Hollow as a tune-up for The Players next week. Rory Mcilroy, Rickie Fowler, and Justin Thomas headline a star-studded field.

If you remember, Quail Hollow was the site of last year’s PGA Championship – hence why this tournament was played at Eagle Point last year – but we’re back at the original course, which will play much easier than last year. Let’s get into the picks.

Lock of the Week

Rory McIlroy: $12,300
This is a chalky option, and I always feel guilty when I pick the top priced guy as the lock, but this is McIlroy’s course. I’m not a McIlroy guy – in fact, I usually hate playing him because of frequent high ownership and a less-than-average putter, but he arrives in-form and ready to attack a course which he has won on twice and has six top 10s in eight tries. While all the top guys are warranted plays this week, McIlroy stands out especially on FanDuel where all the top guys are priced pretty much together. I’ll be excited about him and have plenty of shares this week.

Value Play of the Week

Chesson Hadley: $9,200
Chesson Hadley has always been a streaky golfer; he’s really bad when things aren’t going well but can be lights out when he’s riding hot. This week is an example of the latter, as Hadley comes into Quail Hollow with three straight top 20s on tour. He’s also no stranger to Quail Hollow too, as the Carolina native has top 20 finishes in his last two tries here. At this price, Hadley is a perfect option to compliment your type priced studs, as I could easily see him sneaking into the top 10 this week since he’s in form and comfortable on this track.

Momentum Play of the Week

Hideki Matsuyama: $11,100
Matsuyama is an interesting name this week for many reasons, with the first being that there’s no reason he should be the 11th priced guy on FanDuel this week; it’s far too low for his talent and course history. Matsuyama is still working his way back from a wrist injury he suffered in February, but he’s been trending positively, both form-wise and course history-wise at Quail Hollow. In fact, he’s gone 38th, 20th, 11th, and fifth in the last four years at Quail Hollow, exactly the momentum we want to see from a guy like Hideki. After a final round 69 at The Masters his last time out, I like him as a low owned play with plenty of upside this week.

Contrarian Play of the Week

Kevin Streelman: $9,100
I’ve been on Team Streelman all year, and it’s paid off handsomely, as Streelman has wholly revitalized his game this year as a consistent force on tour. While he’s always been rock-solid off the tee, he’s dialed in his iron play and bogey-avoidance this year, making him now a consistent cut-maker every week. This week should be no different, as Streelman arrives with back-to-back top 10s and has four top 15 finishes at Quail Hollow in the past six years. Keep in mind that Streelman was a different – and significantly worse -player when he had those strong finishes, so he’s an excellent contrarian value play this week who should be low owned.

Fade of the Week

Adam Scott: $10,400
This shouldn’t require much explanation, but FanDuel hasn’t gotten the memo about Scott’s demise this season. Scott is not a good player anymore – at least not regarding his short game – and should be faded until he can find any consistency on the greens. While Scott is always a hot name for players new to DFS golf, stay far away from him, as he’s not the player he was and continue to look lost on the greens week in and week out.
