Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: George Springer, Marcus Stroman, Carlos Martinez

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: George Springer, Marcus Stroman, Carlos Martinez

Week six of the fantasy baseball season has come to a close, and it’s time to discuss some of the major injuries across the league.

George Springer was hit by a pitch on May 11 and missed the next two games over the weekend. He has an elbow contusion and is currently listed as day-to-day. The Astros are optimistic that he could avoid the disabled list. Springer should probably be starting most weekly leagues despite the injury.

Fantasy owners may have gotten an explanation for Marcus Stroman‘s horrid performance so far in 2018. Stroman went on the disabled list on May 11 with what is listed as right shoulder fatigue. Stroman has a 7.71 ERA and is allowing a 46.8% hard contact rate this season. His velocity is down a tick across the board as well. Shoulder injuries are always red flags for pitchers, but the time off could be just what Stroman needs. If you have the DL spots, he is worth a stash, but I would also understand if you’re cutting your losses at this point.

Carlos Martinez felt discomfort after his start last Tuesday. Martinez visited a doctor and received an MRI that revealed that he has a mild lat strain. According to Jay Paris of MLB.com, Cardinals’ GM Mike Girsch described the disabled list trip as a break and hoped that Martinez could be ready in two weeks. He does not currently have an official return date.

Here are a few more injuries that we are tracking from the previous week of action.

Robinson Cano (2B – SEA)
Cano was hit by a pitch on Sunday and was removed from the game. X-Rays showed a fracture to his fifth metacarpal in his right hand. He will likely have an extended absence, but he currently is without a timetable for return.

Adrian Beltre (3B – TEX)
Beltre left the game on Sunday after aggravating his left hamstring again. Beltre had just returned from the disabled list on Tuesday. There is currently no set timetable, but it is possible he will go back on the DL.

Chase Anderson (SP – MIL)
Anderson did not make his start scheduled for Saturday and was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a stomach illness.

Yu Darvish (SP – CHC)
Darvish was placed on the disabled list early last week on May 7 with flu-like symptoms. Darvish was initially slated to start on Monday but is now expected to start Tuesday night against Atlanta.

Todd Frazier (3B – NYM)
Frazier has a strain in his left hamstring and was placed on the DL on May 8th. He is expected to return when eligible on May 18.

Ryan Zimmerman (1B – WSH)
Zimmerman was placed on the disabled list on May 12 with back soreness. He does not currently have a set date to return. Matt Adams had already earned playing time against right-handed pitching and should get more opportunities with Zimmerman on the DL.

Jameson Taillon (SP – PIT)
Taillon left a start on Friday with a laceration to his right middle finger. He is scheduled to pitch on Thursday against San Diego. There is a chance he could miss a start, so keep an eye on his status in daily leagues. Play it safe and keep Taillon on the bench in shallow weekly leagues.

Keynan Middleton (RP – LAA)
Middleton returned from the disabled list on Thursday but was removed from his second appearance on Sunday with an injury. This is disheartening for fantasy players that stashed Middleton for saves. Cam Bedrosian and Jim Johnson are the likely candidates for save opportunities.

Rich Hill (SP – LAD)
Hill left the game on Sunday with a blister on his middle finger. Hill has a long history of finger and blister issues, so this is concerning to say the least. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

Updating Previous Injuries

Greg Bird (1B – NYY) Ankle
Bird had ankle surgery in March and has yet to play this season. He was sent on a rehab assignment on May 10 and could be back sometime in May.

Miguel Sano (3B – MIN) Hamstring
Sano has been dealing with a hamstring strain and has been on the DL since May 1. Sano completed baseball activities this weekend and could be back as early as this week. Keep an eye on his progress.

Miguel Cabrera (1B – DET) Hamstring
Cabrera has been on the DL since May 4 with a hamstring strain, but he could return early this week.

Dustin Pedroia (2B – BOS) Knee
Pedroia had knee surgery in October and has yet to make his 2018 debut. Pedroia will start a rehab assignment early this week and could return as early as May 25. He could be worth speculating on if he’s available in deeper leagues for an MI spot.

Adam Eaton (OF – WSH) Ankle
Eaton had surgery to remove cartilage from his ankle on May 10 and has no set timetable for his return. Eaton was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 11.

Jacob deGrom (SP – NYM) Elbow
DeGrom had been on the disabled list since May 6 with a hyperextended elbow. He started on Sunday, but he was removed after only one inning. DeGrom needed 45 pitches to get through the first inning and was removed because of his pitch count. Most fantasy owners probably want to be cautious with him, but he looks like he will make his next start.

Johnny Cueto (SP – SF) Elbow
Cueto received some positive news as his elbow does not need surgery, and he will likely miss 6-to-8 weeks. This is still a significant portion of the season, but it’s much better than the likely alternatives after a visit to Dr. James Andrews.

Justin Turner (3B – LAD) Wrist
Turner has been on the DL since March 29 after fracturing his left wrist. Turner has completed baseball activities over the last week and is now on a minor league rehab assignment. He could return this week.

Alex Reyes (RP – STL) Elbow
Reyes is coming back from Tommy John surgery he underwent March of 2017 and is currently on a minor league rehab assignment. Reyes is one of the elite pitching prospects in the game, but his role on the major league club is yet to be determined.
