Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Yu Darvish, Jean Segura, Buster Posey

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Yu Darvish, Jean Segura, Buster Posey

Eight weeks of the fantasy baseball season are in the books and there are plenty of injury situations to break down for fantasy week nine. Yu Darvish was placed on the disabled on Saturday with tendinitis in his right tricep. His 4.95 ERA and 4.73 BB/9 haven’t been what fantasy owners or the Cubs were expecting in his first season with Chicago. Darvish does not currently have a timetable set for his return.

Jean Segura had a scary moment when he was accidentally kicked in the head during a slide into second base on Saturday. Segura was removed from the game and did not play on Sunday. He is currently in the concussion protocol and awaiting the results of tests on Sunday. If Segura is diagnosed with a concussion, he would be placed on the seven-day DL. Check for updates before setting your roster on Monday.

Buster Posey was not in the lineup on Saturday or Sunday with soreness in his right hip. He is currently listed as day-to-day and was available to pinch hit. Posey should be safe to start this week especially with the lack of depth at the catcher position.

Ronald Acuna had to be removed from the game on Sunday with an apparent leg injury. He limped off the field under his own power, but the injury looked ugly. Be on the lookout for updates on Acuna.

Here are a few more injuries that we are tracking from the previous week of action.

Andrew Miller (RP – CLE)
Andrew Miller was placed on the DL on Saturday with inflammation in his right knee. He currently does not have a set timetable for his return. Miller had just come off the DL on May 11 for a hamstring strain. He has been struggling this season and the injuries have been frustrating. His upside makes him stashable in a roto league with DL spots.

Francisco Cervelli (C – PIT)
Cervelli was scratched from the lineup on Sunday with flu-like symptoms. Despite the sickness, Cervelli should probably be started in most leagues because of the lack of depth at the catcher position.

Dee Gordon (2B – SEA)
Gordon fractured the big toe on his right foot on May 9 but tried to play through it. The Mariners put him on the DL on May 22 due to the injury after knowing about it for a couple of weeks. Gordon has taken ground balls and had batting practice this weekend, so he could be ready to return on May 31 when first eligible.

Steven Souza (OF – ARI)
Souza is back on the disabled list after re-injuring the right pectoral muscle that had him on the DL until May 3. He had an MRI last Saturday that revealed the strain. He does not have a set return date at this point.

Dexter Fowler (OF – STL)
Fowler’s season took another unfortunate turn as he was hit with a pitch on his knee on Saturday. X-rays came back negative, and he was held out of the lineup on Sunday. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

Jake Faria (SP – TB)
Faria left his start on May 22 with an oblique strain and was placed on the DL the next day. He does not currently have a set date to return.

Raisel Iglesias (RP – CIN)
Iglesias was put on the DL on May 23 with a left bicep strain. He still does not have a timetable to return. Jared Hughes has been used as the closer in his absence. Hughes should only be owned for short-term saves as he will be removed from the role as soon as Iglesias returns.

Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)
Byron Buxton left the game on Saturday after crashing into the outfield wall and experiencing a laceration above his left eye. Buxton was back in the lineup on Sunday. If you’re in a deep enough league where Buxton needs to play, he should be good to go.

Justin Upton (OF – LAA)
Justin Upton left Saturday’s game early after being hit with a pitch on Saturday. It is officially listed as a forearm contusion and he is listed as day-to-day. Keep an eye out for lineups on Monday before you set your lineup, but Upton should be safe to play in weekly leagues.

Josh Reddick (OF – HOU)
Reddick was placed on the DL on May 23 with a skin infection on his left leg. Reddick believes that the injury is a spider bite. He should be able to return in early June.

Khris Davis (OF – OAK)
Davis was placed on the 10-day DL on May 23 with a strain in his groin. He could possibly return on May 31.

Updating Previous Injuries

Marcus Stroman (SP – TOR) Shoulder
After struggling most of the season, Stroman was placed on the DL on May 11 with right shoulder fatigue. He has been throwing long toss and has a bullpen scheduled for this week. He could possibly return sometime in the next week or so.

Mike Soroka (SP – ATL) Shoulder
Soroka has been on the DL since May 17 with shoulder inflammation. He is expected to make a rehab start this week.

Eric Thames (1B/OF – MIL) Thumb
Thames has been on the DL since April 25 after having surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb. He is rehabbing in Arizona and could return in June.

Alex Reyes (SP – STL) Elbow
Alex Reyes has been on a Triple-A rehab assignment in which he had a 13-strikeout game in his final rehab start. Reyes is coming back from Tommy John surgery and is expected to return on May 30.

Clayton Kershaw (SP – LAD) Bicep
Kershaw has been on the DL since May 6. He threw a four-inning simulated game this weekend and is expected to start for the Dodgers on Thursday.

Madison Bumgarner (SP – SF) Hand
Bumgarner had surgery on March 24 and was sent on a Triple-A rehab assignment this weekend. He could return sometime in June.

Yoenis Cespedes (OF – NYM) Hip
Cespedes has been on the DL since May 22. He has taken batting practice and started a running program this week. He could return sometime in the next week.

Todd Frazier (3B – NYM) Hamstring
Frazier did some sprinting and took batting practice last week. He could return sometime this week.

Daniel Murphy (2B – WSH) Knee
Murphy has been on the DL since March 27 while recovering from knee surgery. He was sent on a Double-A rehab assignment this weekend and could return to the Nationals in early June.

Zach Britton (RP – BAL) Achilles
Britton had Achilles tendon surgery in December and is expected to begin a Triple-A rehab assignment May 30. He should be back in the Orioles bullpen in the next week or two. Grab him if he is somehow on your waiver wire.

Carlos Rodon (SP – CHW) Shoulder
Rodon is recovering from shoulder surgery that he had in September. He has been on a Double-A rehab assignment since May 24 but was struck in the forehead with a line drive. The incident should not affect Rodon moving forward, and he is expected to return in early June.
