DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (6/11)

DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (6/11)

Monday offers up an eight-game slate on DraftKings and there are some attractive pitching options on the mound tonight with three heavy favorites all priced above the $10,000 mark. I’ll be using at least one of those studs in every lineup I create today, but in order to get them in and have a solid lineup of bats, we’ll need to hunt for some value. Let’s take a look at some guys on the cheap that allow us to get up to the top arms and pricey hitters.

Pitcher

Jack Flaherty (STL): $8,300 vs. SD
The Cards rookie has been a little up and down so far in 2018, but that’s expected of a young pitcher. His stuff is excellent and he’s one of the few pitchers on the board with a strikeout prop of 7 or higher. The matchup against the Padres is one to target as Flaherty is a heavy (-173) favorite against a San Diego team that’s striking out more than 25% of the time, just behind the Phillies for the worst rate in the league. He’s in play in all formats.

Other Notables

Catcher

Yan Gomes (CLE): $3,300 @ CHW
Gomes is on a hot streak of late with a hit in each of his last six games, including homers the past two games. His hard hit and flyball rates are way up and he got the day off yesterday before coming into the game in Detroit and promptly going deep for a pinch-hit HR. He travels to the South Side of Chicago today where he gets a hitter-friendly ballpark to put his peaking exit velocities into play. If you need more savings, look to a Boston catcher.

Other Notables

First Base

Yonder Alonso (CLE): $3,700 @ CHW
I really like the Indians against Lucas Giolito as he’s been awful. Even in the starts where he doesn’t get lit up, he’s not providing enough strikeouts to pay off his cheap salary. Even if he does get Ks, he’s walking way too many batters and giving up a ton of hits. Most of the Tribe’s bats are on the expensive side tonight as a result of the matchup, but Alonso is affordable and the price works well with his .346 wOBA and 118 wRC+ versus RHP.

Other Notables

Second Base

Starlin Castro (MIA): $3,600 vs. SF (BvP Special)
At first glance, you may not like the matchup against Madison Bumgarner. I’m usually not into batter vs. pitcher, but Castro has absolutely owned him, going 14-for-30 (.467) against him. He’s quietly having a solid season and carries a .350 wOBA and 123 wRC+ against southpaws this year. He also hits leadoff which adds to his value. His hard-hit rate and batted ball data are looking nice as well. Use Castro at low ownership and move on.

Other Notables

Third Base

Matt Carpenter (STL): $3,300 vs. SD (also 2B eligible)
Carpenter is on a tear lately but his slow start and his low ownership numbers have kept his price very reasonable. He’s my favorite value play on the slate tonight and for good reason, even after his terrible start to 2018, Carpenter is still sporting a .210 ISO, .346 wOBA and 121 wRC+ versus righties which is not surprising considering he’s working on his third six-game hitting streak since mid-May. The price is too low to fade. Get him in there.

Other Notables

Shortstop

Jordy Mercer (PIT): $2,800 @ ARI
Tonight, all the shortstops I’ll be playing are mid-$4,000 range or more. I just don’t really like any of the cheaper options on the board. If you want to go the opposite way, I can’t fault you for looking at Mercer. Over the last two weeks, his exit velocities and hard-hit rate have both increased. The Marlins offer a couple of cheap punt options as well, but I’d rather play Jordy on the road and batting sixth than either of the fish against MadBum.

Other Notables

Outfield

Dexter Fowler (STL): $3,300 vs. SD
Fowler hasn’t fully broken out of his early-season slump like his teammate Carpenter, but he’s making progress. His batted ball data has been looking good the last two weeks, most notably, his hard hit rate and exit velocities. Padres pitcher Jordan Lyles has been allowing a 50% hard-hit rate over the last two weeks. The Cards sit on a five-run implied total, so getting St. Louis exposure is solid as they should support Flaherty today.

Brian Anderson (MIA): $3,600 vs. SF (also 3B eligible)
Before yesterday, Anderson had racked up 14 hits in seven games and has been a value machine of late. That kind of point-per-dollar production is what you want from a cash game play, let alone a cheap outfield play. The matchup isn’t the best, but his recent performance coupled with some spiked hard-hit rates and exit velocities have me with an eyebrow raised. He’s a solid option in tournaments and I wouldn’t scoff at using him in cash games.

Jon Jay (ARI): $3,500 vs. PIT
You can’t expect much pop, but he’s hit to the tune of a .304 AVG this season, and he gets on base a good deal, which is likely the reason the D-Backs acquired him as an upgrade over the speedy Jarrod Dyson. Jay is the newest addition to the D-Backs lineup and he’ll leadoff against RHP once the rest of their outfield is healthy. He’ll assume that role again today with good platoon splits with a .327 wOBA and 105 wRC+ this season.
