Today is my parents’ anniversary! Which is somewhat exciting for me and definitely not at all exciting for you. Hopefully, it’s tonight’s 10-game slate that gets you fired up instead.
With 20 teams and plenty of high-powered offenses ready to ignite, there should be plenty of value to find. Let’s try and focus on cheap, unique offerings with potentially low ownership. Throughout the season this article will primarily focus on players on the teams with the highest implied team totals for the day.
As always, you must pay close attention to batting lineups when they are released in addition to monitoring weather reports leading up to game time. For reference throughout the season, be sure to bookmark our overview of MLB Park Factors and how to “Use Weather to Your Advantage” in MLB DFS. Pitcher
Jack Flaherty (STL): $7,800 vs. MIA
With no true aces taking the mound, there are a variety of interesting options to fill out the pitcher slot in your lineup. Flaherty intrigues me for several reasons. The bottom-feeding Marlins are 11-21 on the road this year, sporting one of the worst road records in baseball. As such, St. Louis is one of the most massive favorites on the night (-210), and Miami is implied for just 3.5 runs, easily one of the lowest numbers on the slate. That alone is enough to make Flaherty viable in cash, while the 70-point upside he displayed against the Phillies recently keeps him in the GPP discussion.
Catcher/First Base
Francisco Cervelli (PIT): $2,900 vs. LAD
It’s rare you can get someone batting third in a solid lineup at this price in the first place, let alone someone at home going against a pitcher making his Major League debut. Cervelli is in the midst of a career season, with an already career-high eight home runs to go along with a sexy .278/.399/.535 slash line. Rookie starter Caleb Ferguson might indeed be great one day, but I’m betting on the veteran catcher to keep his hot season going against the southpaw.
Second Base
Eduardo Núñez (BOS): $2,900 vs. DET
This one is rather simple. We want to load up on as many Red Sox, Yankees, and Athletics tonight, as all three teams are implied for 5.5 runs or more. Of course, you’ll have to check back when lineups are set to make sure Nunez is getting the start. But if he is, he’s a great play against a southpaw in the hitter-friendly Fenway Park. Núñez has been on a tear lately, with 10 hits over his last six starts.
Third Base
Miguel Andújar (NYY): $3,200 @ TOR
You already know the strategy here. The Yanks are implied for a tidy 5.5 runs tonight inside the hitter-friendly confines of the Rogers Centre, which is about as good as it gets. Andújar offers a cheap-ish way to get a piece of the action, especially against the unheralded Sam Gaviglio.
Andujar has been raking, with at least 24 FanDuel points in three of his last six. He makes for a great tournament play in a potent Yankees lineup.
Shortstop
Yairo Muñoz (STL): $2,800 vs. MIA
Per usual, we have to dig to find what I’d consider a “value” at shortstop. If you don’t want to pay for Marcus Semien ($3,300), then Muñoz is a nice option. Like Flaherty above, he is a Cardinals’ rookie, which for some reason means he’ll be good all year (no I’m not an embittered Brewers fan, you are).
Seriously though, in his debut season, the rookie is hitting .298 with an OPS just a shade under .800, which is excellent for a shortstop. He gets to face Wei-Yen Chen, a lefty (and former Brewer) with an ERA above 6.00 on the season.
Outfield
Starling Marte (PIT): $2,900 vs. LAD
I’ll be honest; this is somewhat of a hunch. However, Marte feels egregiously underpriced for someone slashing .290/.340/.477 with 23 RBIs on the season. Again, Marte will be batting in the middle of a strong lineup that gets to face a southpaw making his first MLB start. At this price, he’s a great GPP play that gives you room to spend up at other outfield spots, for guys like Aaron Judge and J.D. Martinez.
