Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Carrasco, Evan Longoria

We’re into Week 12 of the fantasy baseball season and there are all kinds of injuries to track as you prepare to set your lineups for this week.

It was a difficult sight to see at Comerica Park on Tuesday when Miguel Cabrera exited the field grabbing his upper left arm during an at-bat. Cabrera will need season-ending surgery after he ruptured his biceps tendon. Cabrera had slightly bounced back in 2018 with an .843 OPS, but his ISO has consistently stayed below .150 for the better portion of a season and a half. John Hicks will likely see more plate appearances which could boost his value in leagues where he is eligible at catcher.

Carlos Carrasco hit the 10-day disabled list on Sunday after he was hit with a line drive on Saturday. The injury was initially said to be a forearm contusion, but postgame X-rays showed that the contusion was on his elbow. Shane Bieber was recalled from Triple-A and started Sunday for the Indians. Carrasco is scheduled to undergo further examination on Monday, but it is possible that he could be back after the minimum stay on the disabled list.

Evan Longoria was hit with a pitch on Thursday and fractured the fifth metacarpal in his left hand. He was placed on the 10-day DL on Saturday and does not have an official timetable to return. Pablo Sandoval and Alen Hanson could see more at-bats with Longoria on the shelf, but they are more suited as NL-only plays at this point.

Garrett Richards was placed on the 10-day DL on June 15 with a left hamstring strain. He left his start on Wednesday after two innings. Richards had an MRI on Thursday, but the results have not been disclosed. The severity of the strain determines if this is a minimum stay or something that could linger for the next month. This adds to the staggering franchise-high 15 players that the Angels now have on the disabled list.

Here are a few more injuries that we are tracking from the previous week of action.

Jorge Soler (OF – KC)
Soler fouled a ball of his foot and had to leave Friday night’s game early. An X-ray showed that Soler fractured his first metatarsal in his left foot. He is expected to be out six weeks. A CT scan did show that surgery will likely be avoided, but this is still a significant blow to fantasy owners.

Matt Adams (1B/OF – WSH)
Adams left Friday’s game early after being hit in the hand with a pitch. He is currently listed as day-to-day and was not in the Nationals’ lineup this weekend.

Matt Chapman (3B – OAK)
Chapman had to leave Thursday night’s game early with discomfort in his right hand. An MRI showed no structural damage, but he was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday. He currently does not have a set date to return.

Mike Foltynewicz (SP – ATL)
Foltynewicz was placed on the disabled list on Saturday with tightness in his right triceps. He currently does not have a set timetable to return.

Zack Cozart (3B/SS – LAA)
Cozart hurt his shoulder while making a diving play on Wednesday. He has subluxation in his left shoulder and was placed on the 10-day DL on Thursday. He does not have a set date to return.

Nick Tropeano (SP – LAA)
Tropeano was placed on the DL on Thursday with right shoulder inflammation. He does not have a timetable at this time but could be in for a lengthy stay on the disabled list.

Trevor Cahill (SP – OAK)
Cahill was placed on the 10-day DL this week with an Achilles tendon strain in his right leg. He currently is without a timetable to return. This is Cahill’s second trip to the DL after missing time with elbow concerns in May.

Updating Previous Injuries

Marcus Stroman (SP – TOR) Shoulder
Stroman has been on the DL since May 11 with shoulder fatigue. He was sent on a Class-A rehab assignment this week and could be back in the starting rotation by the end of June.

Ronald Acuna (OF – ATL) Knee/Back
Acuna could return June 22-24 after being on the DL since May 28 with a mild ACL sprain and a back contusion.

Robbie Ray (SP – ARI) Oblique
Ray was sent on a rehab assignment this week. He pitched 2 1/3 innings on Thursday and gave up five runs. He could return after a couple of rehab starts.

Walker Buehler (SP – LAD) Ribs
Initial reports suggested that Buehler didn’t have any fractures, but an MRI revealed that he had a microfracture in his rib cage. He played catch this week and is eligible to return on June 19, but the Dodgers will likely be cautious with him. Buehler could return before the end of June.

Rich Hill (SP – LAD) Finger
Hill’s infamous blisters have kept him on the DL since May 20. He was sent on a rehab assignment on June 14 and is expected to be activated on June 19.

Wil Myers (OF – SD) Oblique
Myers was sent on a Triple-A rehab assignment on June 14. He has been on the DL since April 29 with a left oblique strain. He could be back in early July.

Elvis Andrus (SS – TEX) Elbow
Andrus has been on the disabled list with a fractured right elbow. He was sent on a Double-A rehab assignment this week and could be back before the end of June.

Chris Archer (SP – TB) Abdominal
Archer has been on the DL since June 5 with an abdominal strain. He has been throwing bullpen sessions and could be back before the end of June.

Kevin Kiermaier (OF – TB) Thumb
Kiermaier had surgery on April 20 to repair a ligament tear in his right thumb. He has been on a Triple-A rehab assignment this week and could return on June 20. Kiermaier is worth an add in deeper leagues as he can contribute in power and speed categories.
