4 Prospects To Stash (Fantasy Baseball)

4 Prospects To Stash (Fantasy Baseball)

It’s been another great year for rookie contributors to fantasy baseball teams. We’ve already seen Ronald Acuna, Gleyber Torres, and Juan Soto make season-altering impacts to whoever was lucky enough to snag them. The good news for fantasy players? There are more great prospects on the way. Here are four to consider stashing now.

Kyle Tucker (OF – HOU)
With the recent promotions of the names mentioned above, plus guys like Austin Meadows and Willy Adames now in the bigs, our attention shifts to Tucker. He could end up being a more valuable fantasy bat than all of these guys (except maybe Soto). The 21-year-old has played in 78 games at Triple-A this year, and he’s slashing .301/.367/.505 to go along with 13 homers, 63 RBI, and 14 steals. After hitting just two long balls through the middle of May, Tucker has really picked it up in the power department recently. The only question will be if the defending champs can get him everyday playing time in Houston. He’s probably too talented not to force his way into the lineup, however. Stash Tucker right now.

Eloy Jimenez (OF – CWS)
Jimenez was acquired in last summer’s Jose Quintana trade, and he has the upside to make it a lopsided trade in favor of the White Sox. The 21-year-old obliterated Double-A pitching this Spring, and it earned him a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte a couple of weeks ago. Between the two levels, he’s hitting .313 with 12 homers and a .912 OPS. Immense power is his best attribute as a hitter, but he’s also beginning to walk more, which will be a necessary skill to become an elite bat in the big leagues. Jimenez will be ready for another promotion later this summer. The only question will be if the tanking White Sox want to delay his service time by waiting until next year to bring him up.

Don’t be put off by his current injury, as he’s supposed to be back in two weeks. That should allow Jimenez plenty of time to force a promotion this summer.

Francisco Mejia (C – CLE)
There’s hot, and then there’s what Mejia is doing right now. Over his past 10 games, the 22-year-old is 19-for-43, good for a .442 average. The switch-hitting catcher got off to a painfully slow start this season and the Indians have been moving him around the diamond a bit with auditions in the outfield and at DH. He didn’t do much in his recent promotion to the big leagues (2-for-13), but he’s on a tear since coming back down to the minor leagues. He’ll get another chance soon if he keeps swinging the bat like this.

Forrest Whitley (SP – HOU)
Whitley is arguably the top pitching prospect in the minor leagues right now. The only problem, of course, is the Astros already have the best rotation at the major league level. This means there’s no rush to call up the 20-year-old as a starter. That’s without factoring in that Whitley missed the first 50 games of this season due to a violation of the minor league drug program. He’s only made five starts in Double-A this year and is still building up his arm strength. If anything it could help keep him fresh. If the Houston rotation suffers an injury, Whitley could start. If not, he could be a valuable piece out of the bullpen for another championship run. Whitley has elite swing and miss stuff, which could still help fantasy players even if he’s a reliever this year. He has struck out 29 in 20 1/3 minor league innings thus far in 2018.
