DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Saturday (7/14)

Welcome in to this Saturday’s edition of DraftKings value plays. It’s the weekend before the All-Star break and for some, it’s a welcome pause from the fantasy world. But first, before we recharge and refresh over the coming days, let’s try to give our bankroll one more boost before we hit the break. I’ll be going over a variety of players from all the games starting from the 2 pm slate and after so you can possibly get some helpful money-saving players in the lineup to allow you to get up to some of the $10,000+ starting pitching options across today’s full allotment of games.

Pitcher

Austin Voth (WAS): $5,300 @ NYM

I often don’t know a lot about prospects when they get the call to the bigs. So I owe a big shout out to my dude, T.S., who did a little homework on Voth. He makes his first MLB start today against a horrible Mets team that is struggling on so many levels. Voth (-112) has a sub-10% BB rate and a 20%+ K rate to go along with a mid-3’s xFIP through the minors. The Mets have shown a complete inability to provide run support for their starting pitching and that could hold steady today with the added aspect of unfamiliarity working in Voth’s favor as well. He’s worth a shot in a GPP lineup.

Other Notables

Sean Newcomb (ATL): $6,900 vs. ARI
Brett Anderson (OAK): $5,500 @ SF

Catcher

Chris Herrmann (SEA): $3,000 @ COL

Herrman helped out whoever used him last night by going 4x value on his salary. His price has dropped $100 but he’s still in Coors Field against a RHP so he should certainly get the start again. He’s a flyball hitter and it’s expected to be around 95 degrees in Denver so the ball will be flying. He also has decent splits against righties over his career. If you want top-end arms or other Coors bats, he’s your path to getting there in all formats.

Other Notables

Matt Wieters (WAS): $3,100 @ NYM

First Base

Jose Abreu (CHW): $3,800 vs. KC

Abreu is one of the most underrated hitters in all of baseball. He’s quietly putting together a great career on a bad team and gets overlooked a lot as a result. It’s really hard to ignore this dirt-cheap price tag against southpaw Danny Duffy. In 48 career PAs against Duffy, Abreu is hitting .333 so there is solid recent history between them to go along with the sexy platoon splits. This season, Abreu is posting a .258 ISO, .386 wOBA and 149 wRC+ against lefties so he’s firmly in play in all formats. The weather may be a concern on the South Side of Chicago but if it looks good, roll him out.

Other Notables

Eric Hosmer (SD): $3,500 vs. CHC

Second Base

Carlos Asuaje (SDP): $3,400 vs. CHC

What a time to be alive when Hosmer and Asuaje are basically the same price. He should hit second in today’s lineup and that’s a fair price considering he’s an obvious platoon guy. He and Logan Forsythe are posting high hard hit rates and much higher batted ball speeds and distances the last two weeks, but Asuaje’s lineup spot and the fact that he’s just been better this season give him the nod. Forsythe tends to hit more flyballs and the umpire rotation in LA should lend itself to being favorable towards hitters, but Asuaje is still the guy I like better. Plus, Forsythe can be used at 3B.

Other Notables

Logan Forsythe (LAD): $3,000 vs. LAA (also 3B eligible)

Third Base

Nolan Arenado (COL): $5,500 vs. SEA

In my year and a half writing this column for FantasyPros, I’ve maybe recommended a bat above $4,000 once, and that was because I felt there were no other viable plays on a super-small slate. Today is not a small slate, and there are actually quite a few viable plays for cheap today (see below)…but it’s also the perfect day to play ‘Nado. First, you know he mashes lefties, he always has. Second, he’s at home in Coors Field. Third, his recent batted ball data has been excellent. Fourth, he’s coming off a bad game so he’s almost a sure-fire lock to put up some numbers today. Lastly, it’s Nolan Arenado bobble-head day in Colorado. Yes, I’m going with the bobble-head narrative here. Lock and load, baby!

Other Notables

Tim Beckham (BAL): $3,400 vs. TEX
David Fletcher (LAA): $3,000 @ LAD
Adrian Beltre (TEX): $3,300 @ BAL

Shortstop

Enrique Hernandez (LAD): $3,800 vs. LAA (also OF eligible)

Hernandez has a history of crushing lefties as a reliable platoon guy. With the struggles of Logan Forsythe and some of the injuries the Dodgers have had this season, he’s produced against RHP as well. His splits on the season are nearly identical this season and it’s all the more reason to feel comfortable playing him today against a southpaw. He should bat second and the price is excellent for the matchup, he’s in play in all formats.

Other Notables

Marcus Semien (OAK): $3,700 @ SF

Outfield

Danny Valencia (BAL): $3,500: vs. TEX (also 3B eligible)

Danny V is a career lefty killer and he’s firmly in play today against the gas can known as Martin Perez. I find it hard to believe that Perez is still in the league at this point, this season alone, righties are touching him up for a .410 AVG, .503 wOBA and an absurd .728 SLG. The dude is simply getting abused as a flyball pitcher and it should be about 90 degrees at first pitch in Camden Yards. The Orioles suck, but as bad as they are, Perez is worse!

Adam Jones (BAL): $3,400/Mark Trumbo (BAL): $3,700: vs. TEX

Please see Perez, Martin. Again, Perez is simply dreadful against right-handed bats. If those stat nuggets weren’t enough to get you on the O’s bats, consider they’re facing a pitcher who has a 9.31 FIP versus righty bats and has a higher walk rate than K rate against them. You read that right, Perez has a higher walk rate (11.6%) than strikeout rate (10.5%). I don’t really know what else to say here. Baltimore bats are cheap and totally stackable!

Ben Gamel (SEA): $3,700 @ COL

Want some cheap Coors Field exposure? Gamel should slot in the lineup just above Herrman (above) and the pair make an excellent and affordable mini-stack in cash games or tournaments. He had a solid game last night in the mile high air and again, the temperature will be really hot. Aside from the salary relief, he’s posted some decent platoon numbers this season with a respectable .342 wOBA and 121 wRC+ versus RHPs.

Other Notables

Leury Garcia (CHW): $3,400 vs. KC
Marcell Ozuna (STL): $3,600 vs. CIN
Jorge Bonifacio (KC): $3,800 @ CHW
