Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Gary Sanchez, Carlos Correa, Vince Velasquez

Week 14 of the fantasy baseball season is here and so are the many injuries that fantasy owners are having to plan around for the upcoming week. We’re here to help you get your fantasy teams ready before the lineups set this afternoon.

The biggest news came early this week when Gary Sanchez was diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain last Sunday. Sanchez was placed on the 10-day disabled list on June 25 and is looking at a recovery period of 3-4 weeks. Austin Romine will likely get the majority of the starts behind the plate for the Yankees. Romine is hitting .274 and is not a bad speculative short-term pick up if you play in a deeper format.

The Astros shortstop Carlos Correa landed on the 10-day disabled list this week with a stiff back. Correa sat out on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, so the Astros decided to give him some rest to see if he can get back to full strength. The team seemed optimistic that this could be a minimum stay on the shelf and utility man Marwin Gonzalez could see some more at-bats at shortstop in Correa’s absence.

Here are a few more injuries that we are tracking from the previous week of action.

Max Kepler (OF – MIN)
Kepler had to come out of the game on Saturday in Chicago with heat illness. He was also out of the lineup on Sunday, but that could be more about his .602 OPS against left-handed pitching than the heat concerns. Kepler is currently listed as day-to-day and should be back in the lineup early this week.

Eddie Rosario (OF – MIN)
Rosario had to be removed for heat concerns as well on Saturday, but was back in the lineup on Sunday and should be good to go for this week.

Shin-Soo Choo (OF – TEX)
Shin-Soo Choo was out of the lineup on Saturday with a sore right quadriceps. Choo had an MRI on Saturday that came back clean. He was back in the lineup on Sunday and should be fine going forward.

Steven Wright (SP – BOS)
Wright was scheduled to start on Thursday, but he was instead placed on the 10-day DL on June 26 with inflammation in his left knee. He does not currently have a set timetable for a return.

Christian Yelich (OF – MIL)
Yelich came out the game on Thursday with lower back tightness. He was held out of the lineup all weekend but is listed as day-to-day. Back injuries tend to linger, so this will be something to keep an eye on this week.

Clay Buchholz (SP – ARI)
Buchholz was placed on the 10-day DL on June 25 with an oblique strain. He does not have a timetable set for his return.

Brandon McCarthy (SP – ATL)
McCarthy was placed on the 10-day DL on June 28 with tendinitis in his right knee. He does not have a date set for his return.

Caleb Smith (SP – MIA)
Smith was placed on the disabled list on June 25 with a Grade 3 lat strain. Unfortunately, he is scheduled to have season-ending surgery on July 9.

Vince Velasquez (SP – PHI)
Velasquez was placed on the DL on Saturday with a bruised right forearm. He was hit with a line drive and had to be removed from the game. It looks like Velasquez may have escaped a serious injury, even though there is no set timetable for his return.

Chad Kuhl (SP – PIT)
Kuhl had to come out of his start early on June 26 with a forearm strain in his right arm. He was placed on the 10-day DL on June 29. He might be able to return at some point in July.

Shane Greene (RP – DET)
The Tigers’ closer was placed on the DL this morning with a strained shoulder. His timeframe for return isn’t clear, but he could ultimately lose his role with the presence of Joe Jimenez, who will likely fill in for Greene while he is injured.

Updating Previous Injuries

Carlos Carrasco (SP – CLE) Elbow
Carrasco has been on the 10-day DL on June 17. He was sent on a Double-A rehab assignment on June 30, and he is currently scheduled to start Friday for the Indians.

Lorenzo Cain (OF – MIL) Groin
Cain was placed on the DL on June 26 with a groin strain. He has resumed workouts and is hoping to return on Wednesday. Cain is a risky play in weekly leagues.

Arodys Vizcaino (RP – ATL) Shoulder
Vizcaino has been on the DL since June 24 with inflammation in his right shoulder. He played catch on June 26 and threw a bullpen session on June 30. He looks like he will be activated on Monday. Vizcaino will likely resume his role as closer with the Braves’ bullpen struggling in his absence.

Matt Chapman (3B – OAK) Thumb
Chapman was placed on the DL on June 16 with a contusion on his right thumb. He has bumped up his activities and took swings off a tee this week. He could return on Monday for the Athletics.

Zack Cozart (3B – LAA) Shoulder
Cozart underwent surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He is expected to miss 6-8 months and will not play again in 2018.

Shohei Ohtani (SP – LAA) Elbow
Ohtani took batting practice and ran the bases on June 30. He has been on the DL with a Grade 2 UCL sprain in his right elbow. He is expected to return as a hitter only at this point, but he could return before the All-Star break.
