Geronimo Allison: Late-Round Difference Maker (Fantasy Football)

Geronimo Allison: Late-Round Difference Maker (Fantasy Football)

Geronimo Allison’s mother, Mellisa Glover, decided to give her youngest son a unique name that would stand out in a crowd. According to Glover in an interview with USA Today’s Ryan Wood, she chose Geronimo over other more common names to help her son not blend into their rough neighborhood outside of Tampa, Florida.

Glover’s plan worked. And Allison, despite academic issues that forced him to begin his college career at a Juco, signed on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent after two impressive seasons with the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Even with a name like Geronimo and an impressive 6’3″, 202-pounds frame, Allison did not stand out from the crowd as a member of the Green Bay receiving corps, with just 35 receptions for 455 yards and two touchdowns in limited action as a reserve. Despite his lack of playing time, Allison proved to be an avid learner in the wide receiver and offensive coaching rooms of Don Hutson Center, soaking up as much as he could from veterans Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

With Cobb in the twilight of his career and Nelson now a member of the Oakland Raiders, Allison looks primed to receive a chance to stake his claim as the starting outside receiver opposite of Davante Adams.

On film, Allison has done very little to impress up to this point. The lanky receiver is not exceptionally fast or explosive out of his breaks, and his route running is what one would expect of a young receiver learning his craft. Allison also dropped four balls last season and showed poor ball security with two fumbles on just 23 receptions.

Despite these negative factors, any starting wide receiver playing for Aaron Rodgers is worth owning in all formats, especially when you consider the recent injury history of Adams and Cobb. As of the date of publication, Allison is currently ranked as the 83rd wide receiver off the board and 225th overall, behind low-level DST’s and kickers.

Assuming that Allison can fend off rookies J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown for the starting role outside, 80 or so targets from arguably the best quarterback of all time is a massive bargain as the 83rd wide receiver off the board. After all, It was only six years ago when Rodgers made James Jones a fantasy stud with 14 receiving touchdowns.

While I am not predicting a 14-touchdown season for Allison, and Rodgers will likely lean heavily on Adams, Cobb, and newly acquired tight end Jimmy Graham, fantasy leagues are often won on late-round fliers who turn out to have high ceilings. Of all the wide receivers currently going after the top 200 in fantasy leagues, Allison possesses the highest upside mixed in with a serviceable floor as a flex play in most formats. Do yourself a favor and dive in on Geronimo this season as a late-round difference maker.
