The Quarterback Super Chart (Fantasy Football)

The Quarterback Super Chart (Fantasy Football)

One of the key aspects to being a successful fantasy football player at any level is preparation. Preparation comes in various forms, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. What works for one fantasy player may not work best for another. I am a 14-year fantasy football veteran and play in several high stakes leagues every year, yet I am still always learning and finding new ways to prepare. Average Draft Position (ADP), Expert Consensus Rankings (ECR), Strength of Schedule (SOS), Consistency Ratings, and past fantasy rankings are some excellent tools to prep for upcoming drafts. The only problem is the amount of time it takes to research all of those categories for every player at every position.

Well, what if I told you that all of that information plus more could be found all in one spot? That would be pretty awesome, right? You’re in luck because we here at FantasyPros have got you covered! Before we get to the Quarterback Super Chart, here is a quick overview of each category:

  • Expert Consensus Rankings (ECR): The average rankings from a group of experts in the fantasy industry, compiled by FantasyPros.
  • Average Draft Position (ADP): Data taken from Fantasy Football Calculator.
  • Last Year (LY)/2016/2015 Rank: Where the player finished among his position at the conclusion of the listed season. These rankings are based on points per game, which is a more accurate measure for determining a player’s true upside and value.
  • 15+ Point (PT.) Game (GM): Percentage of games with 15 or more fantasy points in 2017.
  • 20+ Point (PT.) Game (GM): Percentage of games with 20 or more fantasy points in 2017.
  • FPPG: Fantasy points per game in 2017, based on PPR formats.
  • Strength of Schedule (SOS): Strength of Schedule rankings from Weeks 1-16. The lower the rankings, the easier the matchup is.

QB Strategy Talk

This is arguably the deepest quarterback class in fantasy football history. I have never been more comfortable waiting on the position than ever before. If you are the last person to select a QB in a 12-person league, you are still able to land at least one of Jared Goff, Andrew Luck, Philip Rivers, or Jimmy Garoppolo.

If you aren’t confident in any of them, look to add a good backup with high upside. Matt Ryan and Alex Smith have an ECR of 15 and 19, respectively, despite finishing in the top five just two seasons ago. Patrick Mahomes is another outstanding backup option with the potential to be a top-five fantasy quarterback in Andy Reid’s quarterback-friendly offense. Given the plethora of depth, the most logical strategy is to wait a while before drafting a QB. However, if one of the top guys such as Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, or Russell Wilson fall way past their ADP, don’t be afraid to pick one of them and lock down the position all year.

Quick Hits

  • Only two quarterbacks have an ADP earlier than the fifth round — Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson.
  • Matt Ryan fell an astonishing 25 spots in fantasy points per game from 2016 to 2017.
  • Of the quarterbacks researched, Matt Ryan and Marcus Mariota were the only two players unable to record a single game of 20 or more fantasy points.
  • Only four quarterbacks have put up QB1 numbers in three consecutive seasons: Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Kirk Cousins, and Ben Roethlisberger.
  • Just three quarterbacks managed to average over 20 fantasy points per game last season: Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson, and Carson Wentz.

Best Values

1) Blake Bortles (JAC)
Someone needs to explain why Bortles is criminally underrated with an ECR of 22. In his worst fantasy season, the Jacksonville quarterback ranked 17th in fantasy points per game. Is it he really going to fall another five spots this year? Not likely.

Marqise Lee, Donte Moncrief, Keelan Cole, Dede Westbrook, and Austin Seferian-Jenkins make up the best arsenal of weapons Bortles has ever had at his disposal. Plus, do you like winning championships? If so, you probably want Bortles as your quarterback during the fantasy playoffs since he was the top fantasy QB in last season’s fantasy playoffs and the second best in 2015 from Weeks 14 to 16.

2) Alex Smith (WAS)
After having a career-year in 2017, Smith is being taken as the 19th quarterback off the board. The move to Washington from Kansas City will likely have an adverse effect on his numbers, but dropping 15 spots from his overall finish last year seems extreme. Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, and Jordan Reed form a respectable group of targets for the 34-year-old quarterback.

3) Dak Prescott (DAL)
Everyone appears to be down on the third-year quarterback after he took a step back from his rookie season. In what most would consider a letdown season, Prescott still managed to rank 14th in fantasy production. With Ezekiel Elliott in the lineup, the Mississippi State product averaged 19.03 fantasy points per game, which would make him a top-five option last season. Without Elliott in the lineup, Prescott scored just 11.73 points per game. As long as Elliott is on the field, you’re getting a starting fantasy quarterback at a considerable discount with an ECR of 18.

4) Tyrod Taylor (CLE)
Baker Mayfield could take over at any time if the Browns continue to struggle out of the gate in 2018, but until then, Taylor is a great value as a QB2. With two top-eight finishes in the past three seasons, the shifty quarterback has proven he can produce starting caliber numbers. His ECR of 27 has him falling eight spots from his point per game rankings of 19th last season.

However, I have a hard time seeing how his numbers drop when his receiving corps went from Zay Jones, Kelvin Benjamin, and Jordan Matthews to Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry, and Corey Coleman. Taylor is another exceptional late-round value in deeper leagues.

5) Eli Manning (NYG)
I believe in Manning. His past two seasons haven’t been pretty so it’s easy to see why Manning has an ECR of 24. Having said that, last year was practically a write off with Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard missing a combined 17 games due to injury.

With both of his top receivers healthy, an emerging star at tight end in Evan Engram, and the best running back he’s played with since Tiki Barber, how does the Giants quarterback not improve his numbers from a year ago? The Giants also invested heavily into the offensive line with the free agent acquisition of Nate Solder and second-round draft pick, Will Hernandez. The situation couldn’t have gotten any better for Manning in just a single offseason. He may not produce consistent QB1 numbers, but Manning should still easily outproduce his ADP.
